The Vietnam War an Australian Perspective
THE VIETNAM WAR AN AUSTRALIAN PERSPECTIVE [Compiled from records and historical articles by R Freshfield] Introduction What is referred to as the Vietnam War began for the US in the early 1950s when it deployed military advisors to support South Vietnam forces. Australian advisors joined the war in 1962. South Korea, New Zealand, The Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand also sent troops. The war ended for Australian forces on 11 January 1973, in a proclamation by Governor General Sir Paul Hasluck. 12 days before the Paris Peace Accord was signed, although it was another 2 years later in May 1975, that North Vietnam troops overran Saigon, (Now Ho Chi Minh City), and declared victory. But this was only the most recent chapter of an era spanning many decades, indeed centuries, of conflict in the region now known as Vietnam. This story begins during the Second World War when the Japanese invaded Vietnam, then a colony of France. 1. French Indochina – Vietnam Prior to WW2, Vietnam was part of the colony of French Indochina that included Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Vietnam was divided into the 3 governances of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. (See Map1). In 1940, the Japanese military invaded Vietnam and took control from the Vichy-French government stationing some 30,000 troops securing ports and airfields. Vietnam became one of the main staging areas for Japanese military operations in South East Asia for the next five years. During WW2 a movement for a national liberation of Vietnam from both the French and the Japanese developed in amongst Vietnamese exiles in southern China. -

A. Museum and the federal government by Captain David Tomlinson, (Master/owner of the Darwin based Research Vessel Flamingo Bay) and Mr Mike Barron, a Tasmanian associate of Tomlinson's, fr;om the Commonwealth Fisheries. In order to facilitate an inspection of the site, it was decided on analysis of the available options and in the light of the W.A. Museum's policy of involving the finders where possible, to join with Messrs Tomlinson and Barron in an inspection out of Darwin on board the RV Flamingo Bay, a very well equipped and most suitable vessel for such a venture. Due to the depth of the water in which the site lay and the distance off shore, this required not only the charter of Flamingo Bay which normally runs at circa $2000 per day, but also the hire of a sophisticated position fixing system, a Remote Operated Submersible Vehicle with camera (ROV), echo sounder and side scan sonar. -

ROY "PETE" PETERS 2715 Armour Lane Redondo Beach, CA 90278 (310) 947-5823 [email protected] Roy "Pete" Peters was born on 29 October 1946 at Prestonsburg General Hospital in Prestonsburg, KY. He was the second son to Bill and Maudie Peters. He lived in Kentucky, and for a short time in Indiana. For economic reasons in 1952 his family moved to Munith, Michigan. Pete worked at various small job and auto repair shops before and after high School. In March 1966, he joined the Navy. He attended basic training at Great Lakes and then received orders to USS Prairie (AD-15) in Long Beach, CA, where he was assigned to "A" Gang and Boat Division. The USS Prairie sailed to Pearl Harbor in 1966 and in September of that year, he received orders to USS Frank E. Evans (DD-754). It took three weeks travel for him to catch up with the ship in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Soon he was underway on Evans to Vietnam for Naval Gunfire Support operations. On Evans Pete was assigned to "M" Division as an undesignated engineering Machinist Mate striker. He was assigned to forward engine room operating and repairing various steam driven pumps, valves, and turbines. He made two more West-Pac tours and was promoted to E-4 in April of 1968. On the morning of 3 June 1969, he was on mid-watch as a training officer when the collision with the Australian aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne (R-21) occurred. He was trapped in the engine room and scalded by the 600 pound 850-degree super-heated steam. -

Baker Before Vietnam completely fades from memory and its lessons learned gather even more dust, it might be worth exploring a few issues that will likely resurface again. During the latter months of the Vietnam War (1971-72), the United States was actively sending units home, turning facilities and functions over to the South Vietnamese and to U.S. forces located elsewhere before the 29 March 1973 deadline for all U.S. forces to be out of the country. In January 72, President Nixon announced that 70,000 troops would be withdrawn by 1 May 72, reducing the troop level in Vietnam to 69,000. Beginnings I was assigned in 1971 to the 571st Military Intelligence Detachment in Da Nang, the unit primarily ran Human Intelligence (HUMINT) operations throughout I Corps in northern South Vietnam. I was quickly exposed to Viet Cong (VC), North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and friendly forces’ activity in our area of interest. As such it was evident that South Vietnamese forces that had taken part in Lam Son 719 in Laos were licking their wounds - even the much touted 1st Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Division, garrisoned in Hue had been severely crippled in this failed campaign in 1971. We also dealt with other foreign country units, i.e., South Korean, who left I Corps a few months after I arrived, in addition to ARVN commanders and secret police officials. -
History Uss Oklahoma City (Clg-5)
HISTORY U.S.S OKLAHOMA CITY (CLG-5) The USS OKLAHOMA CITY (CLG-5), a guided missile light cruiser, is named for the capital city of Oklahoma. She was originally built as the light cruiser OKLAHOMA CITY (CL-91) by William Cramp and Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her keel was laid on 8 December 1942, and she was commissioned on 22 December 1944. After a series of shakedown cruises in the Caribbean, she conducted local operations in the Hawaii area and then sailed for Ulithi, arriving there on 1 June 1945. Once in the Pacific Theater, OKLAHOMA CITY served as a screen for carriers and participated in the bombardment of the Japanese home islands. She pulled into Tokyo Bay 10 September 1945, and conducted local operations until early 1946. OKLAHOMA CITY arrived in San Francisco on 14 February for inactivation. She was decommissioned on 30 June 1947, and assigned to the San Francisco group of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. OUT OF MOTHBALLS On 7 March 1957 the ship arrived at the yards of the Bethlehem Pacific Coast Company of San Francisco and conversion of OKLAHOMA CITY to a guided missile light cruiser commenced on 21 May 1957. USS OKLAHOMA CITY, was commissioned as CLG-5 at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard 7 December 1960. On 8 February 1961, the OKLAHOMA CITY became the first combatant unit of the US Pacific Fleet to successfully fire a Talos guided missile. Following this exercise, final acceptance trials were run in early March for the Navy Department Board of Inspection and Survey. -more- SHIP'S HISTORY 2-2-2 OKLAHOMA CITY conducted shakedown cruises and trained from March through May 1961 under the operational control of the Commander, Fleet Training Group, San Diego. -

But to your questions, yes we wore a cartridge belt, the belt was stored in a locker in the turret, and the gun captain filled the belts. After the gun was loaded with rounds, six bags of powder (large bags were 110 lbs. each) and lead foil, the gun elevated down to the platform in the pit where loaded, and the primer was about the same size as a 30-30 brass cartridge. After I loaded the primer I would give the gun captain a "Thumbs up," the gun captain then pushed a button to let them know that the gun was loaded and ready to fire.
