A SERVICE OF MORNING PRAYER The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost SEPTEMBER 27, 2020

Anna Ellison Butler Alexander (circa 1865 – September 24, 1947) DEACONESS AND TEACHER

GRACE EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL 701 SW Eighth Avenue Topeka, Kansas 66603 785-235-3457 www.GraceCathedralTopeka.org A House of Prayer for All People PRELUDE: “Trumpet Voluntary in D” John Stanley (1712-1786) Tom Seddon, trumpet; Sylvia Hamilton, organist

HYMN: “Festival Setting of At the Name of Jesus” Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) The Virtual Hymn Choir At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow, / every tongue confess him King of glory now; ’tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord / who from the beginning was the mighty Word. At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, / All the angel faces, all the hosts of light, Thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, / All the heavenly orders, in their great array. Humbled for a season, to receive a Name / from the lips of sinners, unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, / brought it back victorious, when from death he passed; bore it up triumphant, with its human light, / through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast; / filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. Name him, brothers (Christians), name him, with love as strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath; he is God the Savior, he is Christ the Lord, / ever to be worshiped, trusted, and adored. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue / all that is not holy, all that is not true; crown him as your Captain in temptation’s hour; / let his will enfold you in its light and power. Brothers (Christians), this Lord Jesus shall return again, / with his Father’s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, / and our hearts confess him King of glory now.

The people read the bold text together at home. OPENING SENTENCES The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk 2:20

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Officiant alone says Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

THE INVITATORY AND PSALTER Officiant Lord, open our lips. People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

ANTIPHON Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Come let us adore him.

CHRIST OUR PASSOVER Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; * therefore let us keep the feast, Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, * but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; * death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; * but the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourselves dead to sin, * and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia. Christ has been raised from the dead, * the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, * by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, * so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia.

PSALM 78:1-4, 12-16 1 Hear my teaching, O my people; * incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a parable; * I will declare the mysteries of ancient times. 3 That which we have heard and known, and what our forefathers have told us, * we will not hide from their children. 4 We will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the LORD, * and the wonderful works he has done. 12 He worked marvels in the sight of their forefathers, * in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. 13 He split open the sea and let them pass through; * he made the waters stand up like walls. 14 He led them with a cloud by day, * and all the night through with a glow of fire. 15 He split the hard rocks in the wilderness * and gave them drink as from the great deep. 16 He brought streams out of the cliff, * and the waters gushed out like rivers.

THE FIRST LESSON: Ezekiel 18:1-4; 25-32 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The LORD said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?” Lector The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God.

CANTICLE 8 The Song of Moses I will sing to the Lord, for he is lofty and uplifted; * the horse and its rider has he hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my refuge; * the Lord has become my Savior. This is my God and I will praise him, * the God of my people and I will exalt him. The Lord is a mighty warrior; * Yahweh is his Name. The chariots of Pharaoh and his army has he hurled into the sea; * the finest of those who bear armor have been drowned in the Red Sea. The fathomless deep has overwhelmed them; * they sank into the depths like a stone. Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in might; * your right hand, O Lord, has overthrown the enemy. Who can be compared with you, O Lord, among the gods? * who is like you, glorious in holiness, awesome in renown, and worker of wonders? You stretched forth your right hand; * the earth swallowed them up. With your constant love you led the people you redeemed; * with your might you brought them in safety to your holy dwelling.

You will bring them in and plant them * on the mount of your possession, The resting-place you have made for yourself, O Lord, * the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hand has established. The Lord shall reign * for ever and for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON: Philippians 2:1-13 If there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Lector The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God.

CANTICLE 13 A Song of Praise Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; * you are worthy of praise; glory to you. Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever. Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; * on the throne of your majesty, glory to you. Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever. Glory to you, beholding the depths; * in the high vault of heaven, glory to you. Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

A READING FROM MATTHEW: 21:23-32 When Jesus entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” Jesus said to the chief priest and the elders of the people, “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” The chief priests said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.” Lector The Word of the Lord.
