Narratives of Contamination and Mutation in Literatures of the Anthropocene Dissertation Presented in Partial
Radiant Beings: Narratives of Contamination and Mutation in Literatures of the Anthropocene Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristin Michelle Ferebee Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Dr. Thomas S. Davis, Advisor Dr. Jared Gardner Dr. Brian McHale Dr. Rebekah Sheldon 1 Copyrighted by Kristin Michelle Ferebee 2019 2 Abstract The Anthropocene era— a term put forward to differentiate the timespan in which human activity has left a geological mark on the Earth, and which is most often now applied to what J.R. McNeill labels the post-1945 “Great Acceleration”— has seen a proliferation of narratives that center around questions of radioactive, toxic, and other bodily contamination and this contamination’s potential effects. Across literature, memoir, comics, television, and film, these narratives play out the cultural anxieties of a world that is itself increasingly figured as contaminated. In this dissertation, I read examples of these narratives as suggesting that behind these anxieties lies a more central anxiety concerning the sustainability of Western liberal humanism and its foundational human figure. Without celebrating contamination, I argue that the very concept of what it means to be “contaminated” must be rethought, as representations of the contaminated body shape and shaped by a nervous policing of what counts as “human.” To this end, I offer a strategy of posthuman/ist reading that draws on new materialist approaches from the Environmental Humanities, and mobilize this strategy to highlight the ways in which narratives of contamination from Marvel Comics to memoir are already rejecting the problematic ideology of the human and envisioning what might come next. -

Spaces of Sovereignty in Marvel's Secret Wars
Neal Curtis, ‘Doom’s Law: Spaces of Sovereignty in THE COMICS GRID Marvel’s Secret Wars’ (2017) 7(1): 9 The Comics Journal of comics scholarship Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship, DOI: https:// doi.org/10.16995/cg.90 RESEARCH Doom’s Law: Spaces of Sovereignty in Marvel’s Secret Wars Neal Curtis University of Auckland, NZ [email protected] Sovereignty is both the foundation and source of law and the determination of the territory to which the law applies. In this latter sense, sovereignty and the law it supports are an explicitly spatial phenomenon, as can be seen in the meanings of the Greek word nomos, which aside from the law can also refer to a division that marks out a specific territory. This article posits that the Marvel crossover event entitled Secret Wars (2015, 2016) encapsulates the ways in which superhero comics might help us to understand the spatiality of sovereignty. It also considers how resistance to Doom’s law was focused on the transgression of borders and the creation of alternative spatial arrangements. Keywords: Agamben; graphic justice; law; political theory; Schmitt Introduction: When the World Goes Rogue Fifteen years of a ‘War on Terror’ have been an especially fruitful time for studying superhero comics. The exceptional politics of the Bush Doctrine encouraged numerous scholars to return to important questions about the relationship between law and violence, and the nature of a state of emergency that are central to both the superhero mythos and an understanding of sovereign power. At a time when states themselves became rogue or took on the role of the vigilante—at least from the perspective of established International Law—scholars naturally gravitated towards thinking about what the exceptional status of the superhero might tell us. -

How Doctor Doom Stole Christmas a HOLIDAY-Themed Age of Marvel RPG ADVENTURE
How Doctor Doom Stole Christmas A HOLIDAY-Themed Age OF Marvel RPG ADVENTURE By: David White How Doctor Doom Stole christmas is a fan creation written by Ryan T. Goodman and adapted for the Edge of the Empire Roleplaying System by David White based on popular characters from Marvel comics. All images and names of characters and locations, unless expressly stated are TM & © of Marvel Comics & Subs. Used without permission. The Star Wars Edge of the Empire Roleplaying System TM belongs to LucasBooks and Fantasy Flight Games. This event is a word of fandom and is not intended to profit or infringe on the rights of Marvel Comics, LucasBooks, or Fantasy Flight Games. A FEW WORDS FROM THE “CREATOR” I put “creator” in quotes, because I actually did very little to create this adventure module. For one, the original idea is based off of Marvel’s What the-!? #10 from January 1991. It is a story titled “I’ll be Doom For Christmas” written by Scott Lobdell and John Byrne. And even still, much of the pacing, encounters, and even text in this module are directly lifted from the fan-created Marvel Heroic Roleplaying event of the same name written by Ryan T. Goodman featured on the Marvel Plot Points website. So this isn’t so much a creation as it is a bastardization of many other people’s work. With that being said, since the death of Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, I just haven’t gotten to really have too much heroic-style roleplaying adventures. Despite the combined efforts of myself and the other creators at Marvel Plot Points, the game is losing steam and dedicated players.
