The Great Big Marvel Character Index (GBMCI) Compiled by Andrew Goldstein [1] The Great Big Marvel Character Index (GBMCI) Compiled by Andrew Goldstein [1] Version 1.0, last revised 01/20/2018 This index notes each character from the Marvel Universe that was described in one or more MARVEL SUPER HEROES game products. The abbreviations used herein follow. The letter D, followed by a number, indicatesthat the character was mentioned in that issue of DRAGON® Magazine (issues #88 to #198). The letter P, followed by a number, indicates the given issue number of POLYHEDRON Newszine in which a character was mentioned (issues #18 to #61). Some products listed did not mention specific heroes or villains, but are included here to show the complete line of MARVEL SUPER HEROES game products. In cases where character entries occupy multiple pages, the page number given denotes the beginning page of the character entry. Note that this index ONLY includes characters published under the TSR "FASERIP" system; it does not include source material for the SAGA or any other subsequent incarnation of the Marvel RPG, or unpublished "vaporware" works in progress that were never commercially released, etc. This index also does not include various issues of the Marvel-Phile and other publications which do not include character information (for example, the various Ultimate Power Book addenda, Q&A, and the character indexes themselves) although some of those articles do include non- character stats (e.g., Marvel Universe technology, or real-world miltary generic stats). The TSR-produced miniatures sets are likewise not listed, because why the heck would you need to look those up? The index will eventually include fan-made material that follows the same system, as relevant to the Marvel canon. In cases where the character has appeared in multiple publications, the character listing has been repeated for each publication. The reason for this is twofold: 1) It should make it easier to locate a listing when sorting the index by a specific field, and 2) Character listings may change from one publication to another as determined by continuity (allowing the user to differentiate between, say, 1985 and 2014 statistics for a particular character). For instances in which more than one person has taken on the same code name (e.g., Steve Rogers and Jeffrey Mace versions of Captain America), it is specified as such in the listing. Thus, the Steve Rogers version of the character will read: Captain America (Steve Rogers), while the Jeffrey Mace version will read: Captain America (Jeffrey Mace). When known, legacy characters also include numbering (e.g., Captain America I, Captain America II, etc.) but numbering has not been included for cases where the succession is ambiguous (e.g., the long line of hereditary titles for characters such as Iron Fist, Baron Zemo, and Black Panther.) Alternate-universe versions of characters are identified with Marvel's official universe designation within the character name field; if not specified, it can be assumed that the statistics are for the mainline (Earth-616) universe. Characters original to the TSR Marvel Super Heroes RPG, but not canon to the comics, have not been included. In cases where characters have had multiple identities (for example, various codenames chosen by Monica Rambeau over the years), attempts have been made to include cross-references. Not for sale or resale. No lawyers were harmed in the making of this publication. Data published May 1988 and earlier taken from Dragon Magazine #133 (May 1988), with typos, formatting errors, and internal inconsistencies (hopefully!) removed. Character data published after that date are taken from their respective sources, mostly from the tables of contents. Index compiled and formatted by Andrew Goldstein. Thanks also to the folks at Annarchive, where you can find a complete set of scanned files of Dragon Magazine, from it's pre-issue #1 The Strategic Review days all the way through Dragon Magazine #250! https://annarchive. com/dragon.html. Polyhedron Newszine/Magazines including the title's incorporation into Dungeon Magazine, are archived at https://rpg.rem.uz/Dungeons%20%26% 20Dragons/Magazines/Polyhedron/. The index at RPGGeek was instrumental in identifying the publication dates for several publications: https://rpggeek.com/. And of course, thanks to the wealth of material on http://www.classicmarvelforever.com, which looks to be the one-stop clearinghouse for all things related to the Marvel RPG, and may be the eventual home for this document. Lastly, a bit of self-publicity: if you're interested in miniatures, check out my blog at http://alaskaminis.blogspot.com, focusing on Marvel minis from official merchandise to custom jobs, to scratch-built. Baker iv ABSTRACT COSTUME CULTURE: VISUAL RHETORIC, ICONOGRAPHY, AND TOKENISM IN COMIC BOOKS Michael G. Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.
