It is a perfect start for a beautiful walk into the Flåm valley. Turn left from our camping and buy a ticket at the train station (when it is busy, the day before on forehand!!) for the famous train ride. The train leaves approx every hour. Take the train all the way up to Myrdal (865 metres above sea Hike Prest, Aurlandsdalen, level). On the journey up the train stops at Kjosfossen waterfall. Flåmsdalen, Rimstigen Once at the platform take a deep breath mountain air and start Bike Rallarvegen, Skjerdal your descend to the 21 hairpins which will lead you to the Kayak “Old kings Path” bottom of the valley. The road is steep and occasionally cyclist is lingering to pass you, so take care .Take in the scenery and imagine life about 100 years ago, you working as a “road or tunnel digger” at the “navvies road” (Rallarvegen) suddenly you forget your feet are hurting….

The oldest ice movement was from the SE-ESE and converged towards Aurlandsfjorden, while the younger movements were influenced by the local topography and converged towards the larger valleys. Establishment of the deglaciation chronology has been based mainly on morphological studies of glacial deposits, equilibrium line displacements, pollen analysis and radio­ carbon dating. Four events with glacial advances or stagnations have been identi­ fied. The Aurlandsfjord event is assumed to represent a short stagnation of the glaciers at the end of Younger Dryas (after the Ra advance), the Vangen event is older than 9790 ± 160 B.P. and probably younger than 10 000 B.P., the Loven event is dated to the period immediately before 9790 ± 160 B.P., and the Steine event dates from the transition Preboreal/Boreal (9500 B.P.) or the earliest part of the Boreal period. The entire area was deglaciated around 8500 years ago.
