A high-speed ferry takes you along the full length of this stunning waterway, stopping at isolated picture-book villages along the way. At the village of Balestrand you disembark in time for dinner and overnight at the Kviknes Hotel, overlooking the fjord. The Kviknes is a member of De Historiske hotels of Norway. You have most of the next day free to explore Balestrand or you could take the Fjaerland Glacier tour (book locally the day before). It starts with the early 1.5-hour ferry ride taking you along the fjord to Fjaerland. A coach brings you to the fascinating Norwegian Glacier Museum and Visitor Centre.

    New Funding for Wittgenstein's House in Skjolden

    Press release: New funding for Wittgenstein’s house in Skjolden As one of the major sponsors, Luster Sparebank has given a grant of NOK 1 million to the project. This is in addition to NOK 1 million which has been funded by the county of Sogn og Fjordane, in which Wittgenstein’s house is located. There is still a long way for full funding, but with positive response from other key sponsors who will be contacted during the spring, the restoration of Wittgenstein’s house in its original surroundings can already commence within 2017. The renowned Austrian philosopher and engineer Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889- 1951) is not very well known in Norway. However, every year people from around the world come to visit the site where he built the house in 1913, where he sought solitude to work without distractions. Here, Wittgenstein conducted works that delivered important contributions, not just to language and philosophy of mind, but also to mathematics and studies in aerodynamics. Today, the house is located near the centre of Skjolden and is being used as a holiday house. The relocation and restoration of the house to its original architectural form, will create a historic and cultural heritage site in Sogn og Fjordane, and become an international tourist attraction. Upon completion, the Foundation intends to inaugurate the house with its key stakeholders and friends representing Norwegian and international universities with a launch event in June 2019. The project has received significant interest from across the world. A press delegation from Austria will visit the house in Skjolden in May 2017.

It is a perfect start for a beautiful walk into the Flåm valley. Turn left from our camping and buy a ticket at the train station (when it is busy, the day before on forehand!!) for the famous train ride. The train leaves approx every hour. Take the train all the way up to Myrdal (865 metres above sea Hike Prest, Aurlandsdalen, level). On the journey up the train stops at Kjosfossen waterfall. Flåmsdalen, Rimstigen Once at the platform take a deep breath mountain air and start Bike Rallarvegen, Skjerdal your descend to the 21 hairpins which will lead you to the Kayak “Old kings Path” bottom of the valley.     The Norwegian Millstone Landscape Millstones are among the most widespread and abundant artifacts from the past. They can be seen at farms, in gardens, in dry-stone walls and along streams long after the mill itself has disappeared. We intuitively know that there are many stories behind these well-crafted objects that have been so central in mankind’s history; however, most of these stories are lost. Particularly this applies to the ‘life’ of the millstone before it was put to use: the history of extensive quarry landscapes, craftsmanship, quality measures, millstone trade – aspects that collectively form a rich cultural landscape. This project seeks to shed new light on the physical and historical aspects of these multi- faceted landscapes through comprehensive surveys and interdisciplinary research. 1. Relevance to the call The Norwegian Millstone Landscape focuses on the historical narrative of quarrying, processing and trade of specific stone resources crucial to the production of the most fundamental food, flour. The shaping of extensive cultural landscapes by millstone quarrying provides a rich historical re- cord of the social, economic and political processes that surrounded food production for over 1500 years. Moreover, the consumption of millstones at local, regional and international scales represents conduits in the evolution of trade and social networks that grew around the millstone quarrying in- dustry, and that define an ‘extended millstone landscape’. Today, the socio-cultural and economic values of these millstone landscapes are at best greatly underestimated or, at worst, completely un- known. Undertaken by an interdisciplinary research team comprising the disciplines of geology, archaeology, history and landscape geography, this project addresses the proposal call by develop- ing methods for characterisation and reconstruction of the Norwegian millstone landscapes as a narrative that links the past with the present in a common heritage.
