Looking back, the journey completing this book was, by my own standards, everything I could have hoped for and seeing Ithaca itself seems just as anticli- mactic as Cavafy warned his readers it might be. Admittedly, I did meet some Laestrygonians and Cyclopes along the way, but the riches I accumulated far outweigh these unpleasant encounters.1 The journey began as a humble dissertation at Rutgers University where I met Donald R. Kelley, my first dissertation advisor, who was tremendously helpful in fostering the idea for this project. He put me in touch with scholars and savants who undoubtedly know more about several aspects of this field than I probably ever will. On numerous occasions, both Tony Grafton and Jonathan Israel have been generous with their time and support. While the radiant light of their scholarly accomplishments speaks for itself, their kind- ness makes them extraordinary ambassadors of humanity in the academic world. Don Kelley also put me in touch with Martin Mulsow, who would take over as my advisor shortly after Don’s retirement. Martin has been a source of inspiration ever since. He has been instrumental in helping me shape this proj- ect and he has been a dear friend whenever I needed one. I am most grateful to him for his friendship, inspiration, and sense of humor—I genuinely miss our excursions to the Met! A Reimarus conference in 2006 at Rutgers University and the conference “Cultural Crossovers: The Bible and the Profane,” also held at Rutgers in 2007, provided a welcome platform to discuss aspects of my work to an outstanding group of scholars from a number of disciplines related to my own. I would like to mention specifically Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann and Dietrich Klein, whose earlier scholarship on Reimarus opened up new avenues for my own project. Bei zeitgenössischen Werken erfolgt – wie im Verzeichnis der erwähnten Literatur in Band 1 – die Angabe der Titel zumeist nach der Autopsie des Titelblattes unter Belassung der orthografischen Beson- derheiten.   • Antiquarianism: a Reinterpretation Antiquarianism, the Early Modern
    Antiquarianism: A Reinterpretation Kelsey Jackson Williams Accepted for publication in Erudition and the Republic of Letters, published by Brill. Antiquarianism, the early modern study of the past, occupies a central role in modern studies of humanist and post-humanist scholarship. Its relationship to modern disciplines such as archaeology is widely acknowledged, and at least some antiquaries--such as John Aubrey, William Camden, and William Dugdale--are well-known to Anglophone historians. But what was antiquarianism and how can twenty-first century scholars begin to make sense of it? To answer these questions, the article begins with a survey of recent scholarship, outlining how our understanding of antiquarianism has developed since the ground-breaking work of Arnaldo Momigliano in the mid-twentieth century. It then explores the definition and scope of antiquarian practice through close attention to contemporaneous accounts and actors’ categories before turning to three case-studies of antiquaries in Denmark, Scotland, and England. By way of conclusion, it develops a series of propositions for reassessing our understanding of antiquarianism. It reaffirms antiquarianism’s central role in the learned culture of the early modern world; and offers suggestions for avenues which might be taken in future research on the discipline. Antiquarianism: The State of the Field The days when antiquarianism could be dismissed as ‘a pedantic love of detail, with an indifference to the result’ have long since passed; their death-knell was rung by Arnaldo Momigliano in his pioneering 1950 ‘Ancient History and the Antiquarian’.1 Momigliano 1 asked three simple questions: What were the origins of antiquarianism? What role did it play in the eighteenth-century ‘reform of historical method’? Why did the distinction between antiquarianism and history collapse in the nineteenth century? The answers he gave continue to underpin the study of the discipline today.

    Canon before Canon, Literature before Literature: Thomas Pope Blount and the Scope of Early Modern Learning Kelsey Jackson Williams abstract Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649–1697), an English essayist and country gentleman, published two major literary biobibliographies, Censura celebriorum authorum (1690) and De re poetica (1694). In this essay, Kelsey Jackson Williams discusses the texts within the genre of historia literaria and contemporary under- standings of literature. In doing so, he engages with current debates surrounding canon formation and the shifts in disciplinary boundaries that followed in the wake of the Battle of the Books. Early modern canons and definitions of “literature” dif- fered radically from their modern equivalents, and a close reading of Blount’s work offers a window onto this forgotten literary landscape. keywords: historia liter- aria; biobibliography; Battle of the Books; John Locke; development of literary canon john locke’s library has long been recognized as a site of extensive anno- tation, commonplacing, and organization.1 In particular, Locke interleaved Thomas Hyde’s 1674 catalogue of the Bodleian Library and, using his own system of shelf marks, re-created it as an inventory of his own collection.2 Less well known are Locke’s annotations in another product of late seventeenth-century scholarship, Thomas Pope Blount’s 1690 Censura celebriorum authorum.3 The Censura contains brief biographies 1.     Palazzo Querini Stampalia Museum Portego entrance Giovanni Mythology Bellini room room The earliest documents concerning the construction of the palace are from 1513-14 and point to Nicolò Querini as commissioner of the works. Grandson Francesco continued the works of enlargement and restoration in various stages throughout the first half of the century. From this period archival documents note nothing of importance until the acquisitions of the following century: in 1614 the building which is now the east wing of the palace and in 1653 part of the house between the canal and the church in Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The last radical transformation of Ca’ Querini was between 1789 and 1797 for the occasion of the marriage in 1790 between Alvise, son of Zuanne, and Maria Teresa Lippomano. In addition to the elevation of the third floor, completed after 1795, there was a large scale restructuring of the interiors with the reduction of the length of the portego and the evolution of the decorative scheme on which worked Jacopo Guarana, Davide Rossi, ornamentalist Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, gilder Domenico Sartori and brothers and stucco workers Giuseppe and Pietro Castelli. The museum is presented in such a way as to recall a patrician residence of the eighteenth century with the display of all of the collections of the family: furnishings, porcelain, sculpture, fabrics, chandeliers, globes, as well as paintings, in order to bring to life the spaces once truly inhabited by the Querini. A rich theatre where every detail plays an important role, from the fabrics in some rooms woven according to original patterns, to the curtains and the pelmets which adorn the windows to the original chandeliers.

    CRISTINA CAPPELLETTI «Onore e decoro delle muse bresciane»1 La letteratura bresciana del Settecento nei contributi critici Un bilancio sui contributi critici dedicati alla letteratura bresciana de- gli ultimi quarant’anni dovrebbe presentare il «complessivo degli aspetti favorevoli e sfavorevoli di un’attività, il positivo e il negativo di un’espe- rienza», attenendosi al significato che il termine ha in ambito economi- co. In senso più lato, un bilancio dovrebbe proporsi di «determinare [...] quanto è fatto e quanto resta da fare; valutare qualità e difetti, vantaggi e svantaggi»2; e, riportandoci al caso presente, individuare quali autori o generi siano stati più o meno trattati, e proporre – ove possibile – spunti per ricerche future. Per ovviare alla noia che potrebbe ingenerare un mero elenco, o qua- si, di titoli, pur tenendo fede al resoconto delle entrate e delle uscite, si è ritenuto opportuno corredare il bilancio di un allegato con le cosiddette pezze giustificative; nello specifico, di demandare a un Allegato di bilan- cio la bibliografia dei contributi critici degli ultimi quattro decenni, per riservare al testo un consuntivo più “conversevole”, volto a individuare alcuni aspetti peculiari della letteratura bresciana del XVIII secolo, met- tendo in rilievo se e in quale misura la critica si sia occupata di essi. Considerando l’ambiente culturale bresciano settecentesco, già a suo tempo bene delineato dal contributo di Elisabetta Selmi3, ciò che emerge da subito è come lo status di provincia della terraferma veneta abbia po- chi riscontri in ambito letterario, almeno nella seconda metà del secolo. Nei primi cinquant’anni del Settecento, infatti, si guarda all’erudizione veneziana come a un modello da imitare, e Apostolo Zeno e Angelo Calo- gerà, animatori della cultura nella Serenissima di quegl’anni, sono assunti anche da Giammaria Mazzuchelli quali numi tutelari, al cui vaglio sotto- porre le proprie opere e le proprie iniziative.

    Hymns of Synesius of Cyrene in Their Christian and Platonist Context By Dachi Pachulia Submitted to Central European University Department of Philosophy In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy Supervisor: István Bodnár Budapest, Hungary 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The thesis intends to promote the importance of Synesius of Cyrene as a thinker and a philosopher in general. First of all, this is achieved by stressing his influence on Proclus on the one hand and Pseudo-Dionysius on the other. Therefore, the thesis suggests, that in the Athenian philosophical school Christian Neoplatonist philosophers, such as Synesius were indeed read and discussed. The suggestion continues that it was under Proclus that the author of Dionysian corpus got acquainted with Synesius’ writings. But while Proclus was probably ignoring the Christian tenet of Synesius’ philosophy, Ps.-Dionysius held this very nature of Synesius’ thought the most important to “Christianize Proclus”, in other words to construct his own Christian metaphysical system to match it with the pagan counterpart. Thus, in the first chapter of the thesis, I stress the influence of Synesius’ hymns on Proclus’ hymns and Ps.-Dionysius’ letters. The second and third chapter of the thesis intends to further emphasize the uniqueness of Synesius’ thought. It starts with the rethinking of Theiler’s and Hadot’s thesis on Christian Platonist philosophers, who were denying the originality of their thought by making them dependent on Porphyry, the student of Plotinus. In the third chapter, I try to reconstruct the metaphysics of Synesius’ hymns concentrating on the anthropology of the hymns that I argue to be Christocentric in its nature.

Noah’s Ark or the Barque of St. Peter represent the community of the saved and redeemed. However, since Plato at least, the ship also symbolizes the Greek polis and later the Roman Empire. From the fourth century ‒ the Constantinian era ‒ on, these traditions merged. Christianity was made the state religion. Over the course of a millennium, church and state united in a religiously homogeneous, yet not always harmonious, Corpus Christianum. In the sixteenth century, the Reformation led to disenchantment with the sacred character of both church and state as mediators indispensible for religious and secular salvation.

On the other hand, theological thinking participates in a form of rationality which makes such traditions communicable and opens them for debate. In this sense, even particular religious experiences and patterns of interpretation represent a treasure of humankind containing as they do existential explorations and existential insights. So they can help in formulating questions and shaping intuitions even in a different ideological context. Religious questions are expressions of general questions relating to human life; this is the reason for phenomena like inculturation of religions, interreligious dialogue and the reciprocal influence of theology and philosophy. So I hope that a theologian’s contribution to a scientific gathering can be useful. Faith and reason form a constitutive tension for all our reflections here. The term of faith, as I use it here, means every profound existential conviction, be it a part of any constituted religious system or not. Any system of values and any system of global interpretation can be described in terms of such a tension between faith and reason. “Faith” means personal implication and personal appropriation, finally personal commitment to affirmed convictions. “Reason” refers to generalizing interpretation, to mediation and legitimation of subjective experiences and convictions. Faith without reason is fanatical, reason without faith is sceptical. A sceptical attitude doesn’t implicate one’s own existence and one’s own person and remains in distant and relativistic indecision. Contrarily, a fanatical attitude doesn’t expose itself to the challenge of plurality and judges general human conditions by the standard of a particular faith.

Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.
