Statistical Based Regional Flood Frequency Estimation Study for South Africa Using Systematic, Historical and Palaeoflood Data Pilot Study – Catchment Management Area 15 by D van Bladeren, P K Zawada and D Mahlangu SRK Consulting & Council for Geoscience Report to the Water Research Commission on the project “Statistical Based Regional Flood Frequency Estimation Study for South Africa using Systematic, Historical and Palaeoflood Data” WRC Report No 1260/1/07 ISBN 078-1-77005-537-7 March 2007 DISCLAIMER This report has been reviewed by the Water Research Commission (WRC) and approved for publication. Approval does not signify that the contents necessarily reflect the views and policies of the WRC, nor does mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation for use EXECUTIVE SUMMARY INTRODUCTION During the past 10 years South Africa has experienced several devastating flood events that highlighted the need for more accurate and reasonable flood estimation. The most notable events were those of 1995/96 in KwaZulu-Natal and north eastern areas, the November 1996 floods in the Southern Cape Region, the floods of February to March 2000 in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces and the recent floods in March 2003 in Montagu in the Western Cape. These events emphasized the need for a standard approach to estimate flood probabilities before developments are initiated or existing developments evaluated for flood hazards. The flood peak magnitudes and probabilities of occurrence or return period required for flood lines are often overlooked, ignored or dealt with in a casual way with devastating effects. The National Disaster and new Water Act and the rapid rate at which developments are being planned will require the near mass production of flood peak probabilities across the country that should be consistent, realistic and reliable.

Nordenstam a, V.R. Clark b, , N. Devos b,c, N.P. Barker b a Department of Phanerogamic Botany, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Box 50007, S-10405 Stockholm, Sweden b Department of Botany, Rhodes University, Grahamstown 6140, Eastern Cape, South Africa c Institute of Botany, University of Liege, B-22 Sart Tilman, 4000 Liege, Belgium Received 26 June 2008; received in revised form 13 August 2008; accepted 7 October 2008 Abstract We describe two new species from the Sneeuberg, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa: Euryops proteoides and E. exsudans. Both species are locally prolific with populations centred east of the Nardousberg (Graaff-Reinet District). In a molecular phylogeny based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence data, E. exsudans is sister to E. galpinii, but morphology suggests affinities to E. virgineus, E. algoënsis and E. latifolius, all of which are Eastern Cape species. The affinities of E. proteoides are less certain, but it is shown to be basal to a clade comprising E. tenuissimus, E. linifolius and E. hebecarpus, although with no support. Morphologically the species is very similar to the Drakensberg species E. evansii. These two new species augment the suggestion that the greater Sneeuberg region should be recognised as a local centre of Asteraceae diversity and as a centre of diversity for Euryops in particular. © 2008 SAAB. • My Best Teacher 2018
Why we did it ur purpose in developing the ‘My Best Teacher’ booklet series was, like Jansen’s, to counter negative descriptions of schools and teachers by identifying and paying tribute to good teachers. We wanted to continue his message of hope. But, more importantly, we wanted to focus our gaze on the Foundation Phase as a critical stage of schooling which, until recently, has received little attention. We therefore felt it important to draw on the voices of our Foundation Phase group of Ostudent teachers and invite them to tell their stories. Although we did not restrict students to writing about Foundation Phase teachers, we were heartened to see that a number of students chose a Foundation Phase teacher as their best teacher, and we dedicated a section of the booklet to these stories. Jansen acknowledges that a limitation of his book was that the advertising campaign used to seek out the stories privileged those of English speakers and people living in urban areas of South Africa. He explains how his team “could not penetrate all the small villages and towns of South Africa outside the reach of the English newspapers” (2011, p. 14). We, on the other hand, are delighted that a number of our stories originate from the distant rural areas to which Jansen refers. The majority of the stories in this booklet come from local schools in the Eastern Cape, and a number from Grahamstown, the geographical location of Rhodes University. Jansen indicates that another limitation of his book was that the stories chosen were written in English only.

  • The Origin of Towns in the Eastern Cape Midlands
THE ORIGIN OF TOWNS IN THE EASTERN CAPE MIDLANDS D. W. Myburgh Senior Lecturer, Department ofGeograPhy, University of WesternCape IN this study the Eastern Cape Midlands are defined as that ",rea including most of the upper and middle sections in the drainage basins of the Sundays and Great Fish rivers, the southern boundary being taken as the Klein Winterberg and Suurberg ranges. This region consists of the magisterial districts of Murraysburg, Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville, Middelburg, Somerset East, Pearston, Bedford, Cradock, Maraisburg and Molteno (figure 1). The area is of consider- able interest in a study of urb",n origin in South Africa since it incorporates some of the oldest inland towns in the country, Graaff-Reinet, for example, dating as far back as 1786, and it reveals some factors that were important in pioneer township formation, Furthermore, although there are som~ complicating relief features, it is a fairly homoge- neous area in terms of climate, vegetation and natural resources, and therefore one in which central-place relationships can be studied with a minimum of disrupting influences. The origin of urban centres must be seen against the background spread of early settlement to the area and the increase of local population. Mark Jeffer~on noted that "cities do not grow up by themselves. Countrysides set them up to do tasks that must be performed in central places. "I It is self evident that, excluding such factors as the discovery of rich mineral deposits which could have led to the formation of mining settlements, the need for urban centres would only have arisen after a consider- able local rural population had evolved.
