Lewis Department of Geography, Rhodes University, Grahamstown 6140, South Africa Tel: +27 46 6222416, Fax: +27 46 6361199 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Four major climato-environmental phases have been identified in the Eastern Cape, Plettenberg Bay-Knysna region and Little Karoo between somewhat before ~ 40 000 cal. a BP and the present: the Birnam Interstadial from before 40 000 cal. a BP until ~ 24 000 cal. a BP; the Bottelnek Stadial (apparently equating with the Last Glacial Maximum) from ~24 000 cal. a BP until before ~ 18 350 cal. a BP; the Aliwal North (apparently equating with the Late Glacial) from before ~ 18 350 cal. a BP until ~ 11 000 cal. a BP; the Dinorben (apparently equating with the Holocene) from ~ 11 000 cal. a BP until the present. The evidence for, and the characteristics of, these phases is briefly described. Key words Palaeoclimate. Southern Africa. Late Quaternary. Last Glacial Maximum. Late Glacial. Holocene. 1. Introduction 1.1. Purpose of this paper and use of proxy data The purpose of this paper is to summarise the evidence for, and describe the characteristics of, the major climato-environmental phases that have occurred in the Eastern Cape and adjacent Plettenberg Bay-Knysna region and Little Karoo during the last ~ 40 000 a (Fig. 1). The age of these phases has been established mainly by radiocarbon dating. Events predating ~ 40 000 cal. a BP are effectively beyond the range of radiocarbon dating and are not considered in this paper.

Place your luck in a knowledgeable ranger’s hands at Madikwe Game Reserve and bet on how many lions he’ll spot on the sunrise wildlife drive. You have to stay to play at this exclusive reserve on the edge of the Kalahari, and the lodges here will be a splurge for many. But for that once-in-a-lifetime, romantic Out of Africa–style safari experience, South Africa’s fourth-largest reserve can’t be beat. If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. When you’ve had your fill betting on finding rhino, switch to cards at the opulent Sun City casino complex down the road. The final component of the province’s big attraction trifecta is the southern hemisphere’s answer to Las Vegas: a shame- lessly gaudy, unabashedly kitsch and downright delicious place to pass an afternoon. Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Sun City may be the North-West Province’s heavyweight at- tractions, but there are more here than the province’s ‘Big Three’.

    6 THE ENVIRONMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE SITES The purpose of this section is to describe the environments associated with the proposed alternative sites. The information contained herein was extracted from the relevant specialist studies. Please refer to Section 3.5 for a list of all the relevant specialists and their fields of expertise and to Appendix E for the original specialist reports. 6.1 Brazil Site 6.1.1 Physical (a) Location The Brazil site is situated in the Kleinzee / Nolloth region of the Northern Cape, within the jurisdiction of the Nama-Khoi Municipality ( Figure 16). The site has the following co-ordinates: 29°48’51.40’’S and 17°4’42.21’’E. The Brazil site is situated approximately 500 km north of Cape Town and 100 km west-southwest of Springbok. Kleinzee is located 15 km north, Koiingnaas is 90 km south and Kamieskroon is located 90 km southeast of the Brazil site. Natura Viva cc, PO Box 12410 Mill Street, Cape Town 8010, RSA [email protected] January 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Ventura Renewable Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing to develop up to four solar PV facilities, each of up to 100 MW generation capacity, on the farm Visserspan No. 40, c. 10 km northwest of Dealesville and 68 km northwest of Bloemfontein, in the Tokologo Local Municipality, Free State Province. Substantial direct impacts on fresh, potentially-fossiliferous Tierberg Formation (Ecca Group, Karoo Supergroup) bedrocks during the construction phase of the proposed PV solar projects are considered unlikely. The mapped outcrop areas of the Tierberg Formation within the PV solar project areas are small while the mudocks here are likely to be weathered near-surface and mantled by thick superficial deposits such as calcrete. In this region, the near-surface Ecca Group bedrocks are very often extensively disrupted and veined by Quaternary calcrete as well as baked by dolerite intrusions, compromising their palaeontological sensitivity. Potentially fossiliferous Pleistocene alluvial or spring deposits were not encountered in the study area, while pan and associated dune sediments here lie largely – but not exclusively - outside the development footprint. The calcrete hardpans encountered within the study area are of low palaeontological sensitivity. The only fossil remains recorded during the field survey comprise a few small blocks of petrified fossil wood – reworked from Tierberg bedrocks - among surface gravels around the margins of a pan in the SE corner of Visserspan No.

Climate variability is already being observed to be increasing, although there remain uncertainties about the link to climate change. However, the link to water management problems is obvious.
