The TMG aquifer including Peninsula and Nardouw formations comprises approximately 4000m thick sequence of quartz arenite with outcrop area of 37,000 km 2. Groundwater in the TMG aquifer is characterized by its low TDS and excellent quality. Based on the elements of the TMG hydrodynamic system including boundary conditions of groundwater flow, geology, geomorphology and hydrology, nineteen hydrogeological units were identified, covering the area of 248,000km2. -

The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage. -

Wir genießen die Fahrt durch die Karoo (Halbwüste) und grüne Täler, und erleben hautnah die afrikanische Tierwelt bei zwei unvergesslichen Safaris. Entlang der Garden Route fahren wir zum südlichsten Punkt Afrikas, wo sich Atlantik und Indischer Ozean treffen. Durch das Cape Wineland, der Heimat des südafrikanischen Weines, nähern wir uns am Ende unserer Tour wieder Kapstadt. MEDIA RELEASE Embargo: Immediate Ground-breaking efforts to create new penguin colonies begins Cape Town, 16 December- BirdLife South Africa and CapeNature have taken the first concrete step in an ambitious project to help conserve the African Penguin. The idea of creating new African Penguin colonies has been discussed and planned for a number of years, but now is closer to becoming a reality with work starting on the ground at the De Hoop Nature Reserve. African Penguin numbers have decreased dramatically over the last 60 years, with little sign of slowing despite the best efforts of many stakeholders. The populations on the west coast of South Africa have suffered the most, with an over 60% decrease in the last 20 years. This has been largely driven by decreases in the availability of the penguin’s preferred prey: sardine and anchovy. Since the mid-1990s stocks of the fish, once abundant on the west coast, have shifted south and eastwards, away from the former penguin breeding strongholds. The penguins cannot move with the fish because of a lack of safe breeding sites, and so they struggle to find enough food to feed their chicks and survive. “By helping the penguins to colonise new areas that were previously unavailable to them, we hope to increase their population and decrease the risk to any one colony”, says Christina Hagen, Pamela Isdell Fellow of Penguin Conservation at BirdLife South Africa, who is leading the project. In the mid-2000s, African Penguins naturally attempted to establish a colony at the very eastern edge of the De Hoop Nature Reserve, part not frequented by the public. -

The Bird of the Year for 2021, the Cape
BIRD OF THE YEAR 2021 CAPE ROCKJUMPER egg-eating boomslang, thrives in the increasing temperatures associated with climate change. Cape Rockjump- ers have to adjust their behaviour in high temperatures as, instead of coping with the heat by panting (which means losing water), they hide in the limited shade that fynbos provides. The species is a facultative coopera- tive breeder and the dominant male in a territory will occasionally be assisted by a younger, up-and-coming male. The female tends to work equally hard, regardless of the number of helpers. She usually lays two, sometimes three eggs in a nest on the ground, partially sheltered by a nearby boulder. Adults provision their chicks for up to 22 days, usually supplying insects and other invertebrates, but also offer- PETER RYAN ing the odd gecko or chameleon. The chicks are vulnerable to being preyed on by mongooses, honey badgers and snakes.
