PROCLAMATION by the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism No.? ? January 2019 1. I, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), acting in terms of Sections 78 and 79 of the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance, 1974 (Ordinance No. 19 of 1974), and Section 18 of the Problem Animal Control Ordinance, 1957 (Ordinance 26 of 1957) hereby determine for the year 2019 the hunting season and the daily bag limits, as set out in the second and third columns, respectively, of Schedule 1, hereto in the Magisterial Districts of the Province of the Eastern Cape of the former Province of the Cape of Good Hope and in respect of wild animals mentioned in the first column of the said Schedule 1, and I hereby suspend and set conditions pertaining to the enforcement of Sections 29 and 33 of the said Ordinance to the extent specified in the fourth column of the said Schedule 1, in the district and in respect of the species of wild animals and for the periods of the year 2019 indicated opposite any such suspension and/or condition, of the said Schedule 1. 2. In terms of Section 29 (e), [during the period between one hour after sunset on any day and one hour before sunrise on the following day], subject to the provisions of this ordinance, I prohibit hunting at night under the following proviso, that anyone intending to hunt at night for management purposes by culling any of the Alien and Invasive listed species, specified species, Rodents, Porcupine, Springhare or hunting Black-backed jackal, Bushpig and Caracal, in accordance with the Ordinance, must apply to DEDEAT for a provincial permit and must further notify the relevant DEDEAT office, during office hours, prior to such intended hunt. -

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Approval does not signify that the contents necessarily reflect the views and policies of the WRC, nor does mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation for use EXECUTIVE SUMMARY INTRODUCTION During the past 10 years South Africa has experienced several devastating flood events that highlighted the need for more accurate and reasonable flood estimation. The most notable events were those of 1995/96 in KwaZulu-Natal and north eastern areas, the November 1996 floods in the Southern Cape Region, the floods of February to March 2000 in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces and the recent floods in March 2003 in Montagu in the Western Cape. These events emphasized the need for a standard approach to estimate flood probabilities before developments are initiated or existing developments evaluated for flood hazards. The flood peak magnitudes and probabilities of occurrence or return period required for flood lines are often overlooked, ignored or dealt with in a casual way with devastating effects. The National Disaster and new Water Act and the rapid rate at which developments are being planned will require the near mass production of flood peak probabilities across the country that should be consistent, realistic and reliable. -

Villet (Department of Entomology, Rhodes University) Abstract Biological diversity in freshwater biomes is vital to maintain healthy, functioning ecosystems with resilience to disturbance and the impacts of climate change. Freshwater ecosystems provide essential resources to life on Earth. However, as increasing pressure is being placed on the environment by human population growth, the quality of freshwater resources and the health of these ecosystems are at risk. Mountain streams provide an important source of water and are usually less affected by anthropogenic stressors, compared to lowland freshwaters. These montane streams are therefore of important conservation value and due to their untransformed nature serve as ideal ecosystems for biodiversity studies and as reference sites for studies on environmental change. This study explores aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity of the southern Great Escarpment in South Africa. Species assemblages and the environmental variables of each site were sampled from first order streams across five different mountain blocks along the Great Escarpment. Additionally, mitochondrial DNA of three mayfly species (Afroptilum sudafricanum, Demoreptus natalensis and Demoreptus capensis), commonly occurring in the study area, was analysed to compare the genetic diversity between habitat specialist and habitat generalist species. -

Threats to Australia’s grazing industries by garden plants Abstract This report identifies 281 introduced garden plants and 800 lower priority species that present a significant risk to Australia’s grazing industries should they naturalise. Of the 281 species: • Nearly all have been recorded overseas as agricultural or environmental weeds (or both); • More than one tenth (11%) have been recorded as noxious weeds overseas; • At least one third (33%) are toxic and may harm or even kill livestock; • Almost all have been commercially available in Australia in the last 20 years; • Over two thirds (70%) were still available from Australian nurseries in 2004; • Over two thirds (72%) are not currently recognised as weeds under either State or Commonwealth legislation. -
My Best Teacher 2018
Why we did it ur purpose in developing the ‘My Best Teacher’ booklet series was, like Jansen’s, to counter negative descriptions of schools and teachers by identifying and paying tribute to good teachers. We wanted to continue his message of hope. But, more importantly, we wanted to focus our gaze on the Foundation Phase as a critical stage of schooling which, until recently, has received little attention. We therefore felt it important to draw on the voices of our Foundation Phase group of Ostudent teachers and invite them to tell their stories. Although we did not restrict students to writing about Foundation Phase teachers, we were heartened to see that a number of students chose a Foundation Phase teacher as their best teacher, and we dedicated a section of the booklet to these stories. Jansen acknowledges that a limitation of his book was that the advertising campaign used to seek out the stories privileged those of English speakers and people living in urban areas of South Africa. He explains how his team “could not penetrate all the small villages and towns of South Africa outside the reach of the English newspapers” (2011, p. 14). We, on the other hand, are delighted that a number of our stories originate from the distant rural areas to which Jansen refers. The majority of the stories in this booklet come from local schools in the Eastern Cape, and a number from Grahamstown, the geographical location of Rhodes University. Jansen indicates that another limitation of his book was that the stories chosen were written in English only. -

Characteristics and Consequences of Invasion by Sweet Resin Bush into the Arid Southwestern United States Elizabeth A. Pierson and Joseph R. McAuliffe1 Abstract.-Eutyops multifidus (sweet resin bush), a shrubby composite native to South Africa, was introduced to the arid southwestern United States in 1935 by the USDA Soil Conservation Service. The spread of this shrub represents one of the most serious threats to the ecological integrity and economic value of several ecosystems in the semiarid Southwest. In southern Arizona, this shrub readily invades vegetationally intact, semi-arid grasslands and eventually forms virtually uninterrupted monocultures from which native grasses, shrubs, and succulents are almost completely excluded. Study of plant responses at the advancing front of the areas occupied by sweet resin bush demonstrated that death of native species is linked to the spread of this exotic shrub. These dramatic vegetation alterations are persistent and lead to a variety of additional detrimental changes, including marked increases in soil erosion. We have identified the climatic, vegetation, elevation, and soil characteristics of sites that are susceptible to invasion by E. multifidus. In southern Arizona sweet resin bush can occur in vegetation ranging from Sonoran Desert at low elevation (ca. 850-1060 m) to grasslands, chaparral, and woodland at higher elevation (ca. 1300+ m). In grassland, this shrub can invade a wide variety of different soil types, ranging from loamy calcic soils typically occupied by stands of black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) to heavy clay soils occupied by tobosa (Hilaria mutica) and curly mesquite (H. -

The present work evaluates the cytotoxic activity and phytochemical profile of the flower extract. Metabolite profiling was performed using HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS. Total phenolics and flavonoids content were assessed. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against 6 different cancer cell lines using MTT assay.
