PRCUA Building Named a Historic 1873 Landmark on National Register!

Leopold Moczygemba, founder of the first Polish colony in the U.S. in Panna Maria, TX, held the office of President from 1875 to 1880. In 1879, the PRCUA returned to its roots when its 6th Annual Convention was held in Detroit, MI. The following year, in 1880, Piotr Kiolbassa was elected President; he held that office until 1885. Kiolbassa, like Fr. Moczygemba, had been intimately involved in the very roots of the Polish American community. His life story is fascinating. He immigrated to Panna Maria, TX with his parents in 1855 at the age of 18. In 1862, he joined the Confederate Army and was taken prisoner by Union soldiers. The men played to a packed house! In attendance were Dist. #5 Nat’l Dir. Joan Sylak, Fr. Paul Hall Kwiatkowski, and about 125 voices of (L-r) Randy Krajewski, Eddie Biegaj and Eric Hite all raised in singing Polish koledy. Famer How could anyone not have had a wonderful time with such music, singing and refreshments? Stan It was wonderful to hear all these voices singing koledy together. No one wanted to go home. When Musial Randy, Eddie, and Eric played accordion solos, it brought the audience to their feet, clapping until their palms hurt. All were sorry to see the night end; we left with songs in our hearts and internal peace - the glow of Christmas.
