In Switzerland, consternation takes various forms, depending on linguistic region: each language has its own means to capture the vicissitudes of everyday life. Translators must find an evocative equivalent in another language, and thus effect not only a linguistic, but a cultural transfer as well. With Moving Words, its special focus from 2009 to 2011, Pro Helvetia aims to broaden recognition of the translator’s delicate and crucial profes- sion, bolster literary exchanges within Switzerland, and increase Swiss literature’s share of the international book market. In Sibylle Birrer’s article in our dossier devoted to translation, you will learn how Robert Walser’s novels are adapted for a Japanese reader- ship, and what obstacles Peter Stamm’s Agnes encountered on its journey into Farsi. But this issue of Passages does not confine itself exclusively to literary translation. For instance, Christine Lötscher has discovered which children’s books enjoy international appeal, and which do not survive the transfer, while Tobias Hoffmann explains how scripts are distilled into two-line surtitles, and how theatre can benefit from the work. Holger Fock examines the economic and political forces bearing on the market for translations, and Eugène, the Swiss writer of Romanian birth, tells of growing up in a country with four national languages, and of his first forays across the French-German linguistic divide. "With enthusiasm", "words", "encounters"? After successful school graduation and an unsuccessful attempt to study architecture and economics in Iran, my father asked me, “Why don’t you go to Germany?” My first misgiving was not, “why Germany?” but “how can I learn chemistry in German?” That was my first encounter, my first confrontation with a language entirely unknown to me at the time, a language that – thanks to countless Hollywood films – many believed and still think consists of one single word: Achtung. My approach to the German language began with a teacher who studied in Germany during the First World War and, after a few lessons using the standard textbook of the times, Deutsche Sprachlehre für Ausländer, could not answer the question, why do they shoot rockets at them and not the moon? That was my first and last German course, but my second encounter: Odd, an engineer, studied in Germany, cannot answer a beginner’s question? Is the language that complicated? In the aftermath, I attempted to teach myself the language. My favourite leisure activity was, even then, reading. My first stop after Tehran was Graz in Austria. During a brief stay in this city I purchased, quite by coincidence, a novel. “Was it really a coincidence?” I later often asked myself.

Rühli1 and Kaspar Staub1* Abstract Background: In Switzerland, as in other developed countries, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased substantially since the early 1990s. Most of the analyses so far have been based on sporadic surveys or self-reported data and did not offer potential for small-area analyses. The goal of this study was to investigate spatial variation and determinants of obesity among young Swiss men using recent conscription data. Methods: A complete, anonymized dataset of conscription records for the 2010–2012 period were provided by Swiss Armed Forces. We used a series of Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models to investigate the spatial pattern of obesity across 3,187 postcodes, varying them by type of random effects (spatially unstructured and structured), level of adjustment by individual (age and professional status) and area-based [urbanicity and index of socio-economic position (SEP)] characteristics. Results: The analysed dataset consisted of 100,919 conscripts, out of which 5,892 (5.8 %) were obese. Crude obesity prevalence increased with age among conscripts of lower individual and area-based SEP and varied greatly over postcodes. Best model’s estimates of adjusted odds ratios of obesity on postcode level ranged from 0.61 to 1.93 and showed a strong spatial pattern of obesity risk across the country.

Here we can only mention the part of the Foundation’s estate that comprises, in addition to the Sul- zer-Hochhaus in Winterthur as Switzerland’s first high-rise building, four castles of national importance: Grandson Castle in the Canton Ground Floor of Neuenburg, Salenstein Castle and Luxburg Castle in Thurgau, as well as Brestenberg Castle in the Canton of Aargau. Even today, Bruno Stefanini sets his priorities as a collector in placing great value on understanding artistic processes and developments. Die einen werden freundlicher, geduldiger, kümmern sich um die, denen es schlechter geht, die anderen denken nur an sich und hamstern panisch und ohne Grund, was sie kriegen können. Aber wer sind diese anderen? Niemand scheint sie zu kennen und doch gibt es kaum noch Toilettenpapier in den Läden. Aber vielleicht sind die Hamsterer ja die, denen es schlechter geht und mit denen wir Mitleid haben müssten. Nicht, weil sie in einer wirklichen Not sind, aber weil sie Angst haben und ihnen das fehlt, was wir jetzt am meisten brauchen: das Gefühl, in einer Gemeinschaft aufgehoben zu sein, uns aufeinander verlassen zu können, die Krise gemeinsam zu meistern. Klinge ich gerade wie ein Bundesrat? 20.3.2020 Es liegt beim Coronavirus nahe, Parallelen zu hochansteckenden Krankheiten aus der Vergangenheit zu suchen, etwa zur Pest im 14. Ich habe mich jedenfalls entschlossen, nur noch ein- oder maximal zweimal am Tag Radio zu hören oder die Zeitung zu lesen, und Berichte wie diesen ganz zu ignorieren. Denn nicht nur das Coronavirus, auch Panik ist ansteckend. Jedenfalls fühle ich mich seither schon ein bisschen gesünder, ohne jemals krank gewesen zu sein.
