The System of Trade Between Japan and the East European Countries, Including the Soviet Union
THE SYSTEM OF TRADE BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING THE SOVIET UNION YATARO TERADA* INTRODUCTION Poor in natural resources, Japan has long been dependent on overseas supply for most of her raw material and fuel requirements. While imports of raw materials and fuel by the United States and West Germany in 197o accounted respectively for 14 per cent and 22 per cent of their total imports, Japan's imports of raw materials and fuel in the same year amounted to about 59 per cent of her total imports. In addition, Japan depends on imports from foreign countries for ioo per cent of her wool, raw cotton, and nickel; 98 per cent of her petroleum; 95 per cent of her iron ores; and 55 per cent of her industrial coal. Such being the case, one of the guiding principles in Japan's foreign trade policy has been to expand trade with any country, regardless of its political system. Japan was plagued by a gap between her economic growth and her international balance of payments until the mid-i96o's and, in order to improve this situation, promotion of exports was given highest priority. Thus, efforts have been made to expand trade with the Soviet Union and East European countries on a commercial basis. After the resumption of private foreign trade in 1949, trade between Japan and the Soviet Union and East European countries was conducted at a low level for some time. However, since the conclusion of a treaty of commerce and an agree- ment on trade and payment with the Soviet Union in 1957, and the conclusion of treaties of commerce with Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1958 and 1959, Japan's trade with Eastern Europe has increased yearly. -

Brown ABSTRACT In this study, I determine the extent to which Japan’s shrinking workforce population has been affected by gender roles. Many Asian countries are experiencing a prominent decline in birth rate and population, which has increased global interest in these issues. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese government officials have eagerly responded, pushing Japanese women into the labor force as a possible solution. However, this decision has unanticipated drawbacks, which requires officials to address Japanese women’s concerns in and outside of the workplace. I argue that the Japanese government will have more success by addressing these needs, creating a more gender-equal society for Japanese women. -

With data on 123–135 Japanese electronics/electrical machinery makers, we use a dyad panel regression methodology to address hypotheses drawn largely from em- beddedness theory on how the firms’ horizontal and vertical keiretsu business group affiliations and prior alliance networks supported and constrained partner choice in new R&D (innovation) and nonR&D (implementation) domestic economy alliances. We find that in the first half of our series (1985–1991; the “preburst” period), keiretsu served as infrastructure for new strategic alliances that by guest on September 11, 2016 had both innovation (R&D) and implementation (nonR&D) goals. -

A sense of national panic and crisis was ignited in 1995 when Japan experienced the Great Hanshin earthquake and the Aum Shinrikyō attack, the notorious sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway. These disasters came on the heels of economic collapse, and the nation seemed to be falling into a downward spiral. The Japanese lamented the decline of traditional values, social hegemony, political awareness and engagement. -

Afterpresenting a thorough history and description of the Japa- nese sogoshosha, Mr. Dziubla gives several compelling reasonsfor Ameri- cans to establish export trading companies. He also examines the changes in United States banking and antitrust laws that have resultedfrom passage of the act, and offers suggestionsfor draftingguidelines, rules, and regula- tionsfor the Export Trading Company Act. For several years, American legislators and businessmen have warned that if America is to balance its international trade-and in particular offset the cost of importing billions of dollars worth of oil- she must take concrete steps to increase her exporting capabilities., On October 8, 1982, the United States took just such a step when President Reagan signed into law the Export Trading Company Act of 1982,2 which provides for the development of international general trading companies similar to the ones used so successfully by the Japanese. -
Prime Minister Obuchi to Meet President Clinton in Washington
Japan Information and Culture Center, EMBASSY OF JAPAN PRIME MINISTER OBUCHI TO MEET PRESIDENT CLINTON IN WASHINGTON Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi is scheduled to visit the United States later this month on an invitation extended by U.S. P President Bill Clinton during Mr. Clintons visit to Japan in November 1998. The Prime Minister will have talks with President Clinton on May 3. The visit is the first official visit of a Japanese prime minister to the United States in 12 years. The two leaders are expected to discuss a wide-range of international, regional and bilateral issues, including the NATO campaign in the former Yugoslavia, which Japan supports. Japan has been contributing emergency assistance to refugees in the Kosovo crisis. The talks will cover measures to strengthen the Japan-U.S. security alliance, the Asian financial meltdown and North Koreas nuclear APR. 1999 program, including a suspected underground nuclear facility.
