It is used as a model for the investigation of human strongyloidiasis caused by S. stercoralis. The latter is a neglected tropical disease in Ecuador where there are no specific plans to mitigate this parasitic illness. Objective: To evaluate the stages of S. venezuelensis in an experimental life cycle using Wistar rats. Materials and methods: Male Wistar rats were used to replicate the natural biological cycle of S. venezuelensis and describe its morphometric characteristics, as well as its parasitic development. Furthermore, the production of eggs per gram of feces was quantified using two diagnostic techniques and assessment of parasite load: Kato-Katz and qPCR. Results: Viable larval stages (L1, L2, L3) could be obtained up to 96 hours through fecal culture. Parthenogenetic females were established in the duodenum on the fifth day post- infection. Fertile eggs were observed in the intestinal tissue and fresh feces where the production peak occurred on the 8th. day post-infection. Unlike Kato-Katz, qPCR detected parasitic DNA on days not typically reported. Conclusions: The larval migration of S. venezuelensis within the murine host in an experimental environment was equivalent to that described in its natural biological cycle. -

However, parasitism appears not to have been important or at least not recognized until about 1800 when European and American ships began to call frequently. Since that time, parasites have been found in many species; for instance, in birds, in cluding chickens, turkeys, pigeons, pheasants, doves, ducks, sparrows, herons, coots, and quails, and in mammals, including mice, rats, mongooses, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, sheep, cattle, horses, and man. There is a certain uniqueness in the compressed history of the infestations paralleling the sweeping spread of virus diseases when introduced into new territories. 'I"he reports of these parasitic diseases have heretofore been 'i\Tidely scat tered in the literature, and Professor Alicata's publication now provides an orderly and systematic presentation of the entire field. He considers in sequence the considerable number of diseases reported to be caused in Hawaii by protozoa, the very large number caused by nemathelminthes, and the smaller group caused by platyhelminthes. rrhis publication will furnish basic information for future parasitologists who in turn will be immensely grateful. Verocai2,3 Abstract Background: Four species of Strongyloides, Strongyloides felis, Strongyloides planiceps, Strongyloides stercoralis and Strongyloides tumefaciens, have been identifed in cats based on morphology and location in the host with limited data on the prevalence and disease potential of these diferent species. Strongyloides tumefaciens adults are located in colonic nodules while the other three species are in the small intestine. The literature on Strongyloides in cats is scattered and has never been compiled. The aim of this article is to provide a short review of the existing literature on Strongyloides spp. in cats, to describe the pathology of colonic nodules containing Strongyloides sp. seen at necropsies of cats in St. Kitts, West Indies, and to provide the frst unequivocal report of zoonotic S. stercoralis in cats based on sequencing analysis of a portion of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene, and supported by phylogenetic analysis. Results: Colonic nodules containing sections of nematodes, histologically compatible with Strongyloides sp. were seen during necropsy in six cats in St. Kitts, West Indies. Sequencing of the cox1 gene of the mitochondrial DNA extracted from colonic nodules from two of these cats matched sequences of the zoonotic strain of S. stercoralis. -

The blood samples and ticks for the years 2005 and 2006, used for Chapters 2 and 3, were collected during my work in the Galápagos Genetics, Epidemiology & Pathology (GGEPL) and in partnership with the DMV Marilyn Cruz and the DMV Pamela Martinez, also other members of staff, volunteers and students working in the laboratory at that time. The microscope analysis of ~ 1000 blood films prepared for the years before 2013, were also conducted in collaboration with them. I was involved in microscope analysis of ~30% of samples including Isabela and Santiago. Dr Cruz and Dr Martinez, analysed the remaining samples collected across all the tortoise populations included in this study. The GGEPL operated in Galápagos from 2003 to 2010 as a collaboration among the Galápagos National Park Directorate, the University of Leeds, Zoological Society of London, the University of Guayaquil and the NGO Concepto Azul. During this time the Laboratory was supported by grants from the UK government’s Darwin Initiative scheme (reference numbers: 162-12- 17 & EIDPO15), awarded to Dr Simon Goodman, Dr Virna Cedeño, and Prof Andrew Cunningham. -

Neotropical Helminthology, vol. 7, n°2, jul-dec, pp. 327 - 333. Abstract Strongyloides cruzi Rodrigues, 1968 was found in Ophiodes striatus (Spix, 1825) from Itabirito, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The morphology of the nematodes obtained was briefly described and compared with previous reports of Strongyloides spp. from lizards. Taxonomic comments about these parasites are presented and a species of Strongyloides, a genus whose members have rarely been reported in lizards, is for the first time observed in an anguid reptile.
