In a great number of species, including Potamanthus luteus, Ephemera danica and Oligoneuriella rhenana, these egg features have been studied using light microscopy. However, current trends in egg morphology stud- ies use scanning electron microscopy (SEM), so that the eggs of these species need to be re-described in order to estab- lish morphological comparisons. The general chorionic features which have already been described in these three species are confirmed in our SEM study, although a more detailed description of both the architecture and arrangement of these can now be offered. In addition, this study has allowed us to note new morphological data, such as the chorionic reticula- tion in P. lut e us and the complex extrachorion-adhesive layer in E. danica; classification of the lateral attachment struc- ture in P.

Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance.

Invertebrate Distribution and Diversity Assessment at the U. S. Army Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site A report to the U. S. Army and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service G. J. Michels, Jr., J. L. Newton, H. L. Lindon, and J. A. Brazille Texas AgriLife Research 2301 Experiment Station Road Bushland, TX 79012 2008 Report Introductory Notes The invertebrate survey in 2008 presented an interesting challenge. Extremely dry conditions prevailed throughout most of the adult activity period for the invertebrates and grass fires occurred several times throughout the summer. By visual assessment, plant resources were scarce compared to last year, with few green plants and almost no flowering plants. Eight habitats and nine sites continued to be sampled in 2008. The Ponderosa pine/ yellow indiangrass site was removed from the study after the low numbers of species and individuals collected there in 2007. All other sites from the 2007 survey were included in the 2008 survey. We also discontinued the collection of Coccinellidae in the 2008 survey, as only 98 individuals from four species were collected in 2007. Pitfall and malaise trapping were continued in the same way as the 2007 survey. Sweep net sampling was discontinued to allow time for Asilidae and Orthoptera timed surveys consisting of direct collection of individuals with a net. These surveys were conducted in the same way as the time constrained butterfly (Papilionidea and Hesperoidea) surveys, with 15-minute intervals for each taxanomic group. This was sucessful when individuals were present, but the dry summer made it difficult to assess the utility of these techniques because of overall low abundance of insects.

  • Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region
    J. Entomol. Res. Soc., 19(3): 95-107, 2017 ISSN:1302-0250 Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region Caner AYDINLI Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, 26470, Eskişehir/Turkey, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was carried out in order to contribute to the Ephemeroptera (Insecta) fauna of the Eastern Black Sea region and Turkey. As a result, 2.129 larvae specimens from provinces of the Eastern Black Sea region were collected in 2009, and 26 species belonging to 14 genera from 8 families were determined. Eight of these species are new records for the region, namely Baetis vernus, B. (Nigrobaetis) niger, Procloeon bifidum, P. pennulatum, Rhithrogena savoiensis, Ecdyonurus venosus, Choroterpes picteti, Ephemera vulgata. Moreover, Rhithrogena savoiensis Alba-Tercedor and Sowa, 1987 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. Thus, the number of mayfly species in Turkey increased to 158. Key words: Mayfly larvae, fauna, Turkey, new record, Rhithrogena savoiensis. INTRODUCTION Ephemeroptera is one of the most evolutionary primitive orders of the extant insect groups as well as an ancient lineage of insects. The dominant stage in the life cycle of mayflies is the larval one, as they and the larvae inhabit all types of freshwaters. Mayflies are distributed all over the world excluding Antarctica and some remote oceanic islands. Even though Ephemeroptera is represented by more than 3.000 described species, their taxonomical and faunistical studies are still in progress (Barber-James et al., 2008). The shoreline of the Eastern Black Sea Region is a refuge for the Caucasian fauna consisting of Siberian and cold steppe elements migrating towards the temperate areas during the glacial periods in Anatolia (Bahadır and Emet, 2013).

Ulicsni et al. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies.
