Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region

Soc., 19(3): 95-107, 2017 ISSN:1302-0250 Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region Caner AYDINLI Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, 26470, Eskişehir/Turkey, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was carried out in order to contribute to the Ephemeroptera (Insecta) fauna of the Eastern Black Sea region and Turkey. As a result, 2.129 larvae specimens from provinces of the Eastern Black Sea region were collected in 2009, and 26 species belonging to 14 genera from 8 families were determined. Eight of these species are new records for the region, namely Baetis vernus, B. (Nigrobaetis) niger, Procloeon bifidum, P. pennulatum, Rhithrogena savoiensis, Ecdyonurus venosus, Choroterpes picteti, Ephemera vulgata. Moreover, Rhithrogena savoiensis Alba-Tercedor and Sowa, 1987 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. Thus, the number of mayfly species in Turkey increased to 158. INTRODUCTION Ephemeroptera is one of the most evolutionary primitive orders of the extant insect groups as well as an ancient lineage of insects. The dominant stage in the life cycle of mayflies is the larval one, as they and the larvae inhabit all types of freshwaters. Mayflies are distributed all over the world excluding Antarctica and some remote oceanic islands. Even though Ephemeroptera is represented by more than 3.000 described species, their taxonomical and faunistical studies are still in progress (Barber-James et al., 2008). The shoreline of the Eastern Black Sea Region is a refuge for the Caucasian fauna consisting of Siberian and cold steppe elements migrating towards the temperate areas during the glacial periods in Anatolia (Bahadır and Emet, 2013). -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

The accuracy of food web and ecosystem models rests on the reliability of the information on the feeding habits of the species involved. Water boatmen (Corixoidea) is the most diverse superfamily of water bugs (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha), frequently the most abundant group of insects in a variety of freshwater habitats worldwide. In spite of their high biomass, the importance of water boatmen in aquatic ecosystems is fre- quently underestimated. The diet and feeding habits of Corixoidea are unclear as published data are frequently contradictory. We summarise information on the feeding habits of this taxon, which exemplify the diffi culties in evaluating published data on feeding habits in an invertebrate taxon. -

Our past research lacked robustness, especially along the backbone of New Editorial Structure for the phylogeny. I think that this is due to a combination of factors, such as the age of the Zootaxa Ephemeroptera nodes, the genes that we used in the dataset, and the taxa available for analysis with well- Submissions..................4 preserved DNA. I anticipate that greatly increasing the number of loci, across a broad and diverse sampling, will remedy this problem so that we have a clearer picture of the higher Aberdeen Conference level relationships of mayflies. To this end, in this grant we will be targeting over 500 loci to Proceedings Published....4 be included in a supermatrix that will then be analyzed to create a phylogenetic tree for the order. Pictet deposited in the Natural History Museum of Geneva (MHNG) and voucher specimens housed in the Natural History Museum of Vienna (NMW). Due to several unforeseen turns of events, the MHNG collection was already in bad condition at the end of the 19th century. However, the specimens sent by V. Kollar to F.-J. Pictet, and used by the latter for his monograph (1843-1845), have been well curated after their return to the NMW and allow an important nomenclatural change. The species Baetis forcipula F.-J. Pictet, 1843 is now considered a junior subjective synonym of Ephemera venosa Fabricius, 1775, currently Ecdyonurus (Ecdyonurus) venosus (Fabricius, 1775). The specimens described by Thomas in 1968b from southwestern France under the name Ecdyonurus forcipula (F.-J. Pictet, 1843) belong to a new species, Ecdyonurus alaini Bauernfeind sp. nov., which is described herein. Mayfl y specimens described by F.-J. Pictet’s son, A.-E.
