When the war ended he had an opportunity to go back to Ireland, but stayed here and set up his own business. He and a partner formed a trading company that eventually went bankrupt and Askin spent over 10 years paying off his debt. He then formed a new company called the Southwest Fur Trading Company; his territory was from Montreal on the east to Minnesota on the west including all of the Northern Great Lakes. He had three boats built: Welcome, Felicity and Archange. Welcome is believed to be the first vessel he had constructed for his fur trade. Felicity and Archange were named after his daughter and wife. The origin of Welcome’s name is not known. He had two wives, a European wife in Detroit and an Indian wife up in the Straits. His wife in Detroit knew about the Indian wife and had accepted this and in turn she also made sure that all the children of his Indian wife received schooling. Felicity married a man by the name of Brush (Brush Street in Detroit is named after him).

    The New York Sloop The most important of the sloop-rigged small-boat types used in the fisheries was the New York sloop, which had a style of hull and rig that influenced the design of both yachts and work-boats for over thirty years. The New York boats were developed sometime in the 1830's, when the centerboard had been accepted. The boats were built all about New York Bay, particularly on the Jersey shore. The model spread rapidly, and, by the end of the Civil War, the shoal centerboard sloop of the New York style had appeared all along the shores of western Long Island Sound, in northern New Jersey, and from thence southward into Delaware and Chesapeake waters. In the postwar growth of the southern fisheries, during the 1870's and 80's, this class of sloop was adopted all along the coasts of the South Atlantic states and in the Gulf of Mexico; finally, the boats appeared at San Francisco. The model did not become very popular, however, east of Cape Cod. The New York sloop was a distinctive boat—a wide, shoal centerboarder with a rather wide, square stern and a good deal of dead rise, the midsection being a wide, shallow V with a high bilge. The working sloops usually had a rather hard bilge; but in some it was very slack, and a strongly flaring side was used. Originally, the ends were plumb, and the stem often showed a slight tumble home at the cutwater. V-sterns and short overhanging counters were gradually introduced in the 1850's, particularly in the boats over 25 feet in length on deck.

    SAILING COURSE MATERIALS OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION The NCSC has an unusual ownership arrangement -- almost unique in the USA. You sail a boat jointly owned by all members of the club. The club thus has an interest in how you sail. We don't want you to crack up our boats. The club is also concerned about your safety. We have a good reputation as competent, safe sailors. We don't want you to spoil that record. Before we started this training course we had many incidents. Some examples: Ran aground in New Jersey. Stuck in the mud. Another grounding; broke the tiller. Two boats collided under the bridge. One demasted. Boats often stalled in foul current, and had to be towed in. Since we started the course the number of incidents has been significantly reduced. SAILING COURSE ARRANGEMENT This is only an elementary course in sailing. There is much to learn. We give you enough so that you can sail safely near New Castle. Sailing instruction is also provided during the sailing season on Saturdays and Sundays without appointment and in the week by appointment. This instruction is done by skippers who have agreed to be available at these times to instruct any unkeyed member who desires instruction. CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE When you "check-out" we give you a key to the sail house, and you are then free to sail at any time. No reservation is needed. But you must know how to sail before you get that key. We start with a written examination, open book, that you take at home.

    STANDARD SAIL AND EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS (Updated October, 2016) 1. Headsails, distinctions between jibs and spinnakers A. A headsail is defined as a sail in the fore triangle. It can be either a spinnaker, asymmetrical spinnaker or a jib. B. Distinction between spinnakers and jibs. A sail shall not be measured as a spinnaker unless the midgirth is 75% or more of the foot length and the sail is symmetrical about a line joining the head to the center of the foot. No jib may have a midgirth measured between the midpoints of luff and leech more than 50% of the foot length. Headsails with mid-girths, as cut, between 50% and 75% shall be handicapped on an individual basis. C. Asymmetrical spinnakers shall conform to the requirements of these specifications. 2. Definitions of jibs A. A jib is defined as any sail, other than a spinnaker that is to be set in the fore triangle. In any jib the midgirth, measured between the midpoints of the luff and leech shall not exceed 50% of the foot length nor shall the length of any intermediate girth exceed a value similarly proportionate to its distance from the head of the sail. B. A sailboat may use a luff groove device provided that such luff groove device is of constant section throughout its length and is either essentially circular in section or is free to rotate without restraint. C. Jibs may be sheeted from only one point on the sail except in the process of reefing. Thus quadrilateral or similar sails in which the sailcloth does not extend to the cringle at each corner are excluded.

    Part 19 Part 19, similar to part 18, we will be moving up the masts to the next level to install and rig the Topmast yards and sails. When building the masts, I had put the long pole on the top of the mizzen mast and had just assumed that I would be installing a mizzen topgallant, but this was not to be. So the mizzen topsail is as high as I go. You will see in some of the pictures I rigged a mizzen topgallant fore stay to “fill” the space. As before, I re-sequenced the steps to merge the rigging of the sails with the basic rigging. This chapter goes hand in hand with chapter 23 to marry the yards and sails together. I have included the sequencing for the topsails below. The latter are hermaphrodite brigs, or “half-brigs”, or simply “brigs” to use the jargon of laconic whalemen. Kate Cory was built in 1856 by Frank Sisson and Eli Allen in Westport Point, Massachusetts for Alexander H. Cory, one of the lead- ing merchants of that community. The ship was named after Alexander’s daughter. Registered at 132 tons net, Kate Cory was 75' 6" in length between perpendiculars, 9' 1-1/2" depth, and had a beam of 22' 1". The last large vessel to be built within the difficult confines of that port, she was also one of the last small whalers to be built specifically for her trade; most of the later whaling brigs and schooners were converted freighters or fishermen. While originally rigged as a schooner, Kate Cory was converted to a brig in 1858, this rig affording steadier motion in heavy seas or while cutting-in whales, not to mention saving much wear and costly repair to spars, sails and rigging.
