An extraordinary journey into the most evocative archaeological site in the world - Pompeii. three million visitors come to Pompeii each year to immerse themselves in a prodigious historical, cultural and artistic universe. It is as though the past were only yesterday, as though the memory of an ancient era has been suddenly reawakened to reveal its secrets. It is the tangible story of a human tragedy which transformed itself into one of the most incredible moments of understanding in the western world. In this journey, however, we visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum as never before, in a unique, surprising and unrepeatable way that only this programme can provide: in silence, away from the throngs of tourists who invade its ancient streets, palaces, workshops, crossroads and villas.
Alberto Angela takes us on a fascinating night-time journey through the wonders of Venice. A setting encased with art, romance, intrigue and trade, which has played host to characters such as Goldoni, Vivaldi, Marco Polo and Casanova. A journey through famous works of art, exquisite statues, the silence of the lagoon and the shimmering Grand Canal, venturing behind the wings of teatro La Fenice or into 18th century Venetian hallways. Join Angela as he takes us on a voyage of discovery in one of the world’s most unique cities, a place of elegance, music, gambling and beautiful women. Spend a night on the lagoon from dusk to dawn, watching as the pink rays of the morning sun are reflected in the waters...

A“NightLook”attheworld’smostadmiredcityofart:Florence. We also owe the city’s artistic treasure to the last woman in the great Medici dynasty: Anna Maria Luisa. In the twilight of her life, she bequeathed the enormous artistic wealth created and collected by her family to the city of Florence so that all of the “Florentines and Foreigners” could enjoy it in the centuries to come. Without the courage and obstinate willpower of this woman, the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Vecchio, Medici Chapels and many other artistic wonders probably would not exist anymore... these marvellous places are an echo of a great period, a faraway past and a powerful family...

A programme that takes the viewer on a tour of Italy, its works, places and absolutely unique ways of life in a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of our antecedents. these are places recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Let us not forget that Italy has more UNESCO sites than any other country in the world. the special thing about Italy is that these vestiges of the past are dotted all over the country and cover to all historical periods, from the Neolithic and Classical antiquity to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque period and the Age of Enlightenment. this journey is therefore an opportunity to show our pride in the things that the men and women of Italy constructed and preserved in centuries past.

A portrait of the great Italian actress, emblem of neo-realism and icon of world cinema: gunned down by Nazis in Rome, Open City, she brought the lacerations of war to the eyes of the world and became the symbol of a new concept of cinema that hit the streets to bring reality to light. Anna was unique. She revolutionized the way women were portrayed in the movies. As a woman, she embodied a model that was different from all the leading ladies who had come before her, as well as those that would follow. She is the icon of Italianness and the true woman, in contrast to falsemodels conjured up by male desire. “La Magnani” used her enormous acting skills to bolster the realism of passions and feelings, and inspired some of the greatest directors in Europe and the creative use of extraordinarily rich archive materials

Late Sixties: Paris, London, and Milan; the cities pulse to the same rhythm, stars in the same cultural constellation, which rebels and renews itself. Guido Crepax intercepts all that cultural ferment in Milan and captures its aesthetic revolution, transposing everything into his drawn stories, innovating the structures of storytelling. the narrative style of Crepax, who breaks the page in details jazzing or dilating the rhythm, leads back to the modernity of the Nouvelle Vague.the character Valentina is Crepax’s alter ego; through her, we discover the artist and that magical time. the documentary reveals Guido Crepax’s world, traveling between the past and present, in and out from the drawing with a rhythm and visionary ability typical of the artist.

Five young girls, armed only with musical instruments and a dream. From tuscany to the Far East. they dream of success, but they find themselves in war. It’s 1968 and the war is the real one in Vietnam. After fifty years “the Stars” recount their adventure among American soldiers, military bases lost in the jungle and Soul music.
Palermo is one of the most famous cities in the world and boasts an extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage. Palermo’s story has already been told, its wonders revealed, its lacerating contradictions uncovered... always with the undercurrent of the Mafia. But now there is a new story to tell: the tale of the city’s rebirth. the documentary takes us on a journey through the streets, palaces and faces of Palermo, the stars of the city’s way of life, in its year as the “Italian Capital of Culture”, providing an insight into how this city transformed from an open-air museum and memory trigger into a veritable laboratory of social and cultural ideas.

DOVE VA IL FUtURO?

For fifty years the Italian Communist Party has taken credit for the execution of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci. Party bigwigs still claim it to have been the work of a partisan with the fake name of “Colonel Valerio” who put his victims up against the gate of Villa Belmonte on a hillside overlooking Lake Como and shot them with a submachine gun. Not so. After fifty years of enforced silence the real killer is revealed to have been a communist partisan recruited by a British Secret Service agent, specially parachuted into northern Italy by Field Marshall Harold Alexander on orders from premier Winston Churchill. Italy’s leading historian of Fascism, Renzo de Felice, suspected as much, but did not live to gather the proof or establish the reason why.
Little Warriors tells the story of six months at Peter Pan Great Home in the heart of trastevere, in Rome. Peter Pan hosts the families of children with cancer being treated at the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome. the association was founded fifteen years ago by two mothers, Gianna and Marisa, who had just lost their children. this brought them together and united them in the desire to transform their pain into support and help for other families who often, not being able to afford to pay for accommodation, slept in their cars outside the hospital. A welcoming home - completely restructured – with three different blocks and 33 living units that today host dozens of families.
Itineraries, Stories and Crafts from different countries in the world. A collection of various documentaries about nature, environment, social aspects, shot all over the world in the best spectacular places.
A series of documentaries about the most important technological advances of the last years in all kind of fields: from exploring space to renewable energy.

In Rome a judgement was held on 15 March 2007 against the Argentine military cadres responsible for the genocides during the seventies. At the center of this trial, debating the kidnapping and killing of several italian citizens, a particular location, perhaps the most terrible ok all the killing sites of that dark period: the ESMA, the Mechanical School of the Military Navy. Here, 5000 young people were tortured before disappearing, thrown from airplanes down in the open sea or in the Rio de la Plata river; only less of 200 of them survived. A trial is a story in itself, unfolding through painful testimonies and the final judgement, it will also try to investigate the feeling beneath: the mothers’ excruciating sorrow, who have hoped until the end tosee again at least the bodies of their sons and to have their executioners tried; the grat solidarity born between all those who had a similar destiny; the survivors’ anguish; the collective effort in the fight for human rights; the trauma of the children who discover that theirs presumed fathers are sometimes the murderers of their true parents.

In the First World War, alongside the men fought an army of animals. Mules, oxen, dogs, horses, pigs, pigeons were used for moving units and materials, communications, and for the support of the troops. the forced cohabitation with men closer to each other in a possible fate of death and suffering: officers and enlisted men had the opportunity to give and receive affection, but also to deal with beings weak and completely dependent on them. Animals in the Great War offers an unconventional story of dramatic conflict, through letters, diaries and photographs taken by the fighters, and collected in the book that Lucio Fabi has derived from his research, “the good soldier mule” (ed. MURSIA). this documentary rebuilds memories, stories, episodes of real life relationship, in and out of the trench, between humans and animals, including incredible moments of absolute serenity and tenderness, alternating the background of one of the most tragic periods in modern history.

Look at your office, your machine, the grocery store. Look what for you today is normal, and ask yourself what would happen if tomorrow you had to leave everything and never come back. Eight ghost cities. Eight abandoned places to tell, between past and present, the story of the country and time in which they were alive. Apocalyptic scenarios of towns abandoned due to natural disasters, emigration, exhausted mines… for many reasons these towns are now Ghost towns.

Some buildings, like the White House, Buckingham Palace or the Kremlin, immediately evoke a sense of power. this was once true of Italy’s Palazzo Vecchio, and in fact few places in the world acted as a centre of power for such a long period of time. It was the capital of the Signoria, the Duchy of Florence and finally the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy. today it serves as the headquarters of the Municipality of Florence. Palazzo Vecchio is a story of two halves: ancient and modern. the programme takes us through the present tense with a documentarystyle approach, while re-enactments offer us a glimpse at the past. the historic reconstructions filmed inside the Palazzo draw us into the distant atmosphere of times gone by, a period when single individuals accomplished deeds and feats that have been immortalised in the beauty of the heritage they bequeathed to us.

Fumettology is entirely dedicated to the world of comics and created with the full cooperation of the authors and the publishing houses themselves, focusing on the history of Italian comics (hence the subtitle “I Miti del Fumetto Italiano”) and also widening the gaze to the latest news and pushing beyond national borders. the program pursues the goal of satisfying and intriguing the most attentive and aware comic strip fans and also audiences of all ages.

Why Science Is Hunting for an Audience: the Reasons of Italian Researchers

JCOM 1 (2), June 2002 Why science is hunting for an audience: the reasons of Italian researchers Nico Pitrelli Master’s Degree Course in Scientific Communication – ISAS – Trieste – Italy “We can only appeal to society, considering that governments and parties have fallen constantly short of expectations since the late eighties. The public must know that without research there is no innovation, and without innovation there is no state-of-the- art. The lack of research is a handicap for the development of the country.” The words of Silvio Garattini, director of Milan’s Mario Negri Institute, reveal rage and passion. This is how he explained the reasons why more than one year ago 1,500 Italian scientists made an unprecedented, resolute and unmediated appeal to the general public to back research in Italy (appendix 1). Garattini was among the most active in the group of scientists who, since November 2000, had been acting against the restrictions imposed in the field of GMOs by the then Minister for Agricultural Policies Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio. Garattini promoted a number of initiatives which in some cases became real media coups de théâtre, at least if we consider the traditional “privacy” of Italian scientists and researchers, who have always been reluctant to consider the public as a direct interlocutor. Maurizio Zuccotti, from the Development Biology Laboratory of the University of Pavia, one of those who signed the Manifesto for the Freedom of Research (appendix 1), said that “those initiatives intended to draw attention to the problems encountered by researchers in carrying out their research. Shared understanding of all aspects of science needs to be improved.
  • Women in Italian Astronomy

    Women in Italian Astronomy

Women in Italian astronomy Francesca Matteucci, Università di Trieste, Chair of INAF Scientific Council Raffaele Gratton, INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova Summary This document gives some quantitative facts about the role of women in Italian astronomy. More than 26% of Italian IAU members are women: this is the largest fraction among the world’s leading countries in astronomy. Most of this high fraction is due to their presence in INAF, where women make up 32% of the research staff (289 out of 908) and 40% of the technical/administrative staff (173 out of 433); the percentage is slightly lower among permanent research staff (180 out of 599, about 30%). The presence of women is lower in the Universities (27 out of 161, about 17%, among staff). In spite of these (mildly) positive facts, we notice that similarly to other countries (e.g. USA and Germany) career prospects for Italian astronomers are clearly worse for women than for men. Within INAF, the fraction of women is about 35-40% among non-permanent position, 36% for Investigators, 17% for Associato/Primo Ricercatore, and only 13% among Ordinario/Dirigente di Ricerca. The situation is even worse at University (only 6% of Professore Ordinario are women). We found that similar trends are also present if researchers are ordered according to citation rather than position: for instance, women make up only 15% among the 100 most cited astronomers working in Italy, a percentage which is however twice that over all Europe . A similar fraction is found among first authors of most influential papers, which cannot be explained as a residual of a lower female presence in the past.

The targets were selected mainly in order to acquire lightcurves for shape/spin axis Lorenzo Franco modeling. Table I shows the observing circumstances and results. Balzaretto Observatory (A81), Rome, ITALY [email protected] The CCD observations were made in 2020 October-December using the instrumentation described in the Table II. Lightcurve Antonio De Pieri, Antonino Brosio analysis was performed at the Balzaretto Observatory with MPO Parco Astronomico Lilio (K96), Savelli (KR), ITALY Canopus (Warner, 2019). All the images were calibrated with dark and flat frames and converted to R magnitudes using solar colored Riccardo Papini, Fabio Salvaggio field stars from CMC15 catalogue, distributed with MPO Wild Boar Remote Observatory (K49) Canopus. For brevity, the following citations to the asteroid San Casciano in Val di Pesa (FI), ITALY lightcurve database (LCDB; Warner et al., 2009) will be summarized only as “LCDB”. Second World Conference on the Future of Science

Second World Conference on The Future of Science Venice, September 20-23, 2006 EVOLUTION Program (updated June 8, 2006) Wednesday, September 20, 2006 Opening Ceremony – Palazzo Ducale Thursday, September 21, 2006 Evolution of Matter The Universe from the Big Bang to the future Theories of the birth of the Universe, the formation of the first galaxies, stars and black holes, and their evolution to the present will be presented and discussed in the light of the latest observations. Most of the Universe seems to consist of mysterious dark matter and even more mysterious dark energy. A major challenge of present cosmological research is to understand the origin and roles of these invisible players in cosmic evolution, and how they determine the structure of the visible Universe. As in living organisms, the evolution of the Universe is determined by a continuous feedback from cosmological to star-size structures. Gamma-ray bursts, detected throughout the Universe at rates of about one a day and lasting form a few milliseconds to several minutes, are incredibly violent signals of other mysterious events − perhaps the merger of neutron stars, the collapse of a massive star or neutron star-black hole binary. Metals, essential constituents of life on Earth, are ejected by exploding stars at the end of their lifetimes and provide raw material for the next generation of stars. New telescopes in space and on Earth are revealing ever more about the most distant and oldest parts of Universe and are scanning near stars for other solar systems. 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.
