Reeves and Abdul Aleem Chaudhry The endemic freshwater dolphins in the Indus River system of Pakistan, Platanista minor, have been considered endangered since the early 1970s. Measures taken to protect them from deliberate capture seem to have stopped a rapid decline, and combined counts in Sindh and Punjab provinces since the early 1980s suggest a total population of at least a few hundred animals. Severe problems remain, however. In addition to the risks inherent to any species with an effective population size in the low hundreds (at most), these dolphins are subject to long-term threats associated with living in an artificially controlled waterway used intensively by humans. Irrigation barrages partition the aggregate population into discrete subpopulations for much of the year. Dolphins that 'escape' during the flood season into irrigation canals or into reaches downstream of barrages where winter water levels are low have little chance of survival. A few dolphins probably die each year after being caught in fishing nets. Pollution by untreated urban sewage, agricultural runoff and industrial effluent threatens the health of the entire Indus system. The future of this dolphin species depends on Pakistan's commitment to protecting biological diversity in the face of escalating human demands on dwindling resources. JICA selected and dispatched a study team headed by Mr. KOBAYASHI Ichiro Oriental Consultants Co., Ltd. and consists of CTI Engineering International Co., Ltd. and OYO International Corporation between April 2010 and August 2012. The team conducted field surveys at the study area, held discussions with the officials concerned of the Government of Pakistan and implemented seminars, workshops, and so on. Upon returning to Japan, the team conducted further studies and prepared this final report. I hope that this report will contribute to the promotion of this project and to the enhancement of friendly relationship between our two countries. Nilore, Islamabad, Pakistan November, 2009 ABSTRACT Indus River, one of the longest rivers in the World, has five major eastern tributaries viz. Bias, Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum) while many small rivers join it from the right side among which Kabul River is the biggest with its main tributaries, the Swat, Panjkora and Kunar. All these main rivers are perennial and originate from the mountains. Basic sources of these rivers are snowmelt, rainfall and under certain conditions seepage from the formations. Different water sources are labeled with different isotope signatures which are used as fingerprints for identifying source and movement of water, geochemical and/or hydrological processes, and dynamics (age of water). Monitoring of isotopes in rivers can also enhance understanding of the water cycle of large river basins and to assess impacts of environmental and climatic changes on the water cycle. Therefore, a national network of suitable stations was established for isotopic monitoring of river waters in Indus Basin with specific objectives to study temporal variations of isotopes (2H, 18O and 3H), understand water cycles and hydrological processes in the catchments of these rivers, and to develop comprehensive database to support future isotope-based groundwater studies in the basin on recharge mechanism, water balance and monitoring of ongoing environmental changes. Water samples were collected during 2002-2006 on monthly basis from more than 20 stations at the major rivers and analyzed for 18O, 2H and 3H isotopes. -

REQUEST FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (REOI) FOR CONSULTANCY SERVICES Country: PAKISTAN Project Name: Jalalpur Irrigation Project (JIP) Consulting Service: Preparation of detailed design, drawings and bidding documents for Jalalpur Irrigation Project (JIP) Deadline for submission: 25 May 2015 (Monday) Implementing Agency: Punjab Irrigation Department {represented by Project Director, Project Management Unit (PMU) for LBDCIP}, Lahore INTRODUCTION The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has applied for financing for project design advance (PDA) from Asian Development Bank (ADB) towards the cost of preparing detailed design, drawings and bidding documents for Jalalpur Irrigation Project (JIP) in Punjab Province. The project will construct new canals and appurtenant structures and on-farm irrigation and drainage system for 64,000 ha in Pind Dadan Khan and Khushab districts. The main Jalalpur canal will offtake from right bank of River Jhelum at Rasul Barrage and will provide non-perennial irrigation supplies improving crop production. ADB financed project preparatory technical assistance (TA No: 8404) is already preparing feasibility study of the project. 2. The proposed financing will be used for procurement of Consulting Services for preparing detailed design, drawings and bidding documents for JIP. The Consultant will be selected in accordance with the procedures set out in Asian Development Bank’s Guidelines on the Use of Consultants (2013, as amended from time to time). The duration of the assignment is 18 months. 3. The general scope of consulting services will include but not be limited to preparation of: a. Engineering design & drawings of Jalalpur main canal and distribution system with associated drainage system, including updating of PC-1 of the project. -
