s planning every detail of organising and arranging this Convention, so in addition i

D to the business section we hope that you will join us for the Host Night and the Banquet & Ball . Convention is not just about the business session it is also time to meet new friends and this time from around our new District, from South Wales, through Bristol, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester through to Rutland, Rugby & Northampton. I sincerely hope that you will find the programme of business mixed with some fun and listen to the incredible journey of Zara and Ian, which started long before the epic walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End. In the first six months of the Lions year, I have visited many Clubs who certainly prove without doubt “Where there is a need there is a Lion” , thank you all for the warm welcome. I look forward to seeing you at our Convention and I sincerely hope you have a really interesting and enjoyable time. This could be your first Convention and I hope that you will keep coming back year after year.

Extraordinary Convention 2018 105CW Minutes of Extraordinary Convention Meeting 23rd September 2018 at The Chase Hotel, Ross-on-Wye n o

i Convention was called to order at 10.45 am and Lions members from current Districts assembled in the t main hall. Convention started at 11.00am and District Governor Sally Marsh 105W opened the meeting n

e and welcomed everyone. DG Sally went through the usual Health and Safety information and introduced v Chairman PDG Abhnash Bains 105A. n

o Chairman Abhnash again welcomed everyone to Convention and outlined the agenda for the day. C

l Chairman Abhnash introduced PDG Keith Wilding and PCC Simon Moss to present to convention the a background events to Re-districting. u

n Keith explained that due to our decreasing membership (a steady reduction of 10% members per year), n

A 10 out of 12 Districts are now in transition meaning that they have dropped below 1250 members per

District. The number of 1250 was calculated by LCI on the numbers of members per District to make W

C Districts financially viable. With numbers below 1250 then Districts cannot cover financial 5 responsibilities therefore re-districting has become necessary. 0 1

t At MD Convention 2017 a resolution was passed to decrease the number of Districts from 12 to 8. c

i This was approved by LCI. r t

s On July 9th 2019 District CW will be born. The new District will be approximately 250 miles across i

D and will have an approximate membership of 1700. In order to administer the new District, Convention today will vote on the adoption of the Constitution, the budget and will elect the DG Team to govern the new District. Chairman Abhnash thanked Keith and Simon for explaining the background to Convention and Abhnash declared that the Extraordinary Convention had 81 voting delegates representing 50 clubs. Chairman Abhnash called upon the two CNRO’s, PCC Heather Jeavons from 105M and PDG John Charles from 105W, to explain voting procedures to Convention. CNRO Heather informed Convention that all candidates for the DG Team had been correctly nominated and all were eligible to stand. Convention was following Article 7 of the Standard District Constitution and Roberts Rules and there would be secret ballots for the adoption of the Constitution and for the DG Team and a show of cards for the vote on the budget Resolution. PDG John Charles outlined Resolution 1 that in order to set up a new District delegates were voting to adopt the Standard District Constitution.

Resolution No. 1 Constitution: “That the Standard District Constitution and By Laws be adopted by District 105CW for 2019/20 et sequi.” Proposed: District 105W Cabinet Seconded: District 105M Cabinet Note: This requires a majority of two thirds plus one of the registered delegates present and voting. Explanation With the joining of Lions Clubs from three Districts (105E, 105M, 105W) to form the New (redistricted) District 105CW there will be a need to adopt a new constitution relevant to the New District at this stage the Standard Form District Constitution and By Laws are recommended. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 9

n To be enacted this resolution will require a two thirds majority of those delegates present at the

e Extraordinary Convention who exercise the right to vote. PDG John Charles proposed the Resolution and v

n PCC Heather seconded adopting the proposed Constitution. o

C PDG John Charles then outlined Resolution 2, the DG Team elections. John explained to Convention that

l lots had been drawn to the order of presentations. a

u Chairman Abhnash thanked John and Heather for their explanations. n n Election of District Governor 105CW 2019-2020 A Lion Ian Gott of Chipping Sodbury was the only candidate for DG 105CW. Chairman Abhnash called W upon Lion Keith Lawrence from the Lions Club of Chipping Sodbury sponsoring Lion Ian Gott. Keith C

5 introduced Ian to Convention and then Ian Gott made his presentation to Convention. 0 1

Chairman Abhnash thanked Ian for his presentation and called upon PCC Andy Pemberton to make his t

c LCIF presentation to Convention. Andy’s presentation slides attached as Appendix 1. i r t Chairman Abhnash thanked Andy for his presentation. s i

D Chairman Abhnash then announced the nominations for 1st Vice District Governor. Candidates for 1st VDG were: Lion Ben Manluctoa of Aberystwyth Lions Club 105W Lion Richard Williams of Kidderminster and District Lions Club 105M Lion Ben was asked to leave the Convention Hall while Louise Draper of Kidderminster and District Lions Club introduced Richard to Convention. Richard made his presentation to Convention.. Ben was asked to return to the Convention Hall and Richard was escorted from the room. Lion David Hurst of the Lions Club of Aberystwyth introduced Lion Ben Manluctoa. Ben than made his presentation. Chairman Abhnash thanked both candidates for their presentations and called on PDG Keith Wilding to talk to Convention on 105W District Twinning.

Twinning Projects 105W have a twinning arrangement with MD103 District NIE (Normandy, France). 105W had a challenge from the French Lions concerning the recycling of spectacles. In 2015 105W reviewed an agreement made at Convention to commit to collecting glasses for Medico. This then became a Lions Project. Many clubs send their glasses to Chichester but Medico have a facility in France and receive glasses from across Europe. Medico will also recycle hearing aids. It is hoped that the new District 105CW will continue to support this Lions Project. Chairman Abhnash thanked Keith for outlining the project to convention and called upon PDG Alan Hall from 105E to outline the North Sea Lions Project. This project was started in 105M back in 1980 where the UK and Netherlands worked together on International Projects and now there are 11 Districts in total working under North Sea Lions, 2 in 105 which is 105E and 105M, 5 Districts in the Netherlands, 3 in and 1 in Denmark. Members of North Sea Lions will propose a project to the group and a vote is taken on which project to work on. Examples of previous projects are Water Purification, building 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 10

n asked to contribute €80 euros each. It is hoped that the North Sea Lions Project will be adopted by the e new District. v

n Chairman Abhnash thanked Alan for his presentation and called on CNRO Heather to again outline voting o

C procedures and to point out the position in the Convention Hall of the ballot boxes.

l

a Chairman Abhnash thanked Heather and asked delegates to make their vote during t he lunch break and u Convention was adjourned for lunch at 12.30. Chairman Abhnash asked everyone to return by 13.25 to n

n start the afternoon session. A Afternoon Session W Chairman Abhnash called the afternoon session to order at 13.30 and outlined that during the afternoon C

5 session Convention would be voting for 2nd Vice District Governor position and a show of cards to agree 0

1 the budget for 105CW.

t

c Chairman Abhnash received 3 envelopes which she duly opened in front of Convention. Envelope 1 i r

t contained the result of the Constitution Vote and Chairman Abhnash declared to Convention that a clear s i majority voted to adopt the Standard Constitution for 105CW. Therefore Resolution 1 was carried . D Chairman Abhnash then opened the second envelope in front of Convention which was the result of the ballot for District Governor for 105CW 2019-2020. Chairman announced that Ian Gott had been voted to become District Governor . Chairman Abhnash asked District Governor Elect Ian Gott to address Convention. Chairman Abhnash thanked Ian for his presentation. Abhnash then opened the third envelope showing the results of the ballot for the election of 1st VDG 105CW 2019-2020 and Lion Richard Williams was declared the winner . 1st VDG Elect Richard was asked to address Convention. Chairman Abhnash thanked Richard for his presentation and also thanked Ben for participating in this election campaign. Chairman Abhnash asked Convention for permission to destroy the ballot papers that had been used up to date. Permission was given. Chairman Abhnash then asked for the candidate for 2nd Vice District Governor and their sponsors. Candidates for 2nd VDG 105CW were as follows: Jaap de Jonge from Shirley Lions Club 105M Ben Manluctoa from Aberystwyth Lions Club 105W David McKirdy from Black Mountains Lions Club 105W Lots had been drawn prior to Convention on the order of presentations. As a result candidate Jaap de Jonge from Shirley Lions Club was the first to present to Convention, sponsored by Shirley Lions Club of 105M and IPDG Chris Burrows introduced Jaap to convention. The other Candidates had been asked to leave the Hall whilst Jaap gave his presentation. When Jaap had completed his presentation he was escorted out of the Convention Hall and candidate Ben was bought in. Ben was introduced to Convention by Lion David Hurst of Aberystwyth Lions Club. Ben came to the podium and announced to Convention that after some considerable thought he had decided to withdraw from the 2nd VDG contest and he wished the remaining two candidates all the best. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 11

i Lion David McKirdy was asked to come back into the Convention Hall and was then proposed to t

n Convention by PDG Lion Ron Clarke of Black Mountain Lions Club after which David made his presentation. e

v Chairman Abhnash thanked all of the candidates for taking part in the 2nd VDG contest and introduced n DGE Lion Ian Gott to outline the plans for 105CW. o C

Ian referred to the meeting held previously at Worcester Cricket Ground and discussed the outcomes of l

a the discussions at the Cricket Ground and the SWOT analysis that was discussed at that meeting. u Based on all of the discussions at the Cricket Ground meeting he had used those outcomes to formulate n

n some plans moving forward. DGE Ian stressed that not only was it important to help find new members A

but to retain our members, therefore help Clubs to promote themselves externally. In his new District

W structure the Lions members are the most important. He stressed a need to embrace new technology

C and use the Re-districting to make a fresh start. 5

0 DG EIan outlined further plans to stay with 4 regions across the District and each of these 4 Regions 1

t would have 4 Zones, therefore the new District will contain 16 Zones in total. The regional Chairs will c i

r also have a Zone responsibility and the cabinet structure will have Team Leaders, District Secretary and t

s District Treasurer, the 4 Regional Chairs, 1st and 2nd VDGs and the DG who is also the Global Action i

D Team Leader. Currently if counting just 105M and 105W there are 133 Officers so there is a great need to streamline that number. Each Officer must have a current job description. Ian is advocating 4 cabinet meetings over the Lions year, two face-to-face and 2 online meetings. Ian announced to Convention that after some consultation he had appointed PCC Lion Andy Pemberton as the new District Secretary. Ian asked Andy to stand and be recognised. Ian thanked Convention for voting for him as DG Elect. Chairman Abhnash thanked Ian for his presentation and called on CRNO PCC Heather to outline the voting procedures for voting for 2nd Vice District Governor. Convention broke for coffee and to give delegates time to vote at 14.35. Chairman Abhnash called the meeting back to order at 15.00. Chairman Abhnash called upon CNRO PDG John Charles to run through Resolution 2 , District Dues for 2019-2020. John called upon Lion Christine Moss, District Treasurer for 105M, to propose the new District Dues. The Dues Resolution was seconded by DG Sally Marsh 105W.

Resolution No. 2 Dues Resolution: “That the District Dues for District 105CW for 2019/20 be set at £9.00 per member, to be collected in 2 equal instalments of £4.50 on 1st July 2019 and on 1st January 2020, as calculated on the basis of the attached Draft Budget.” Budget attached to mins as Appendix 2 Proposed: District 105M Cabinet Seconded: District 105W Cabinet Note: This requires a simple majority of registered delegates present and voting. Chairman Abhnash asked convention to raise their voting cards for those in favour of the proposed budget. There was an overwhelming majority of votes in favour of the new budget. Abhnash asked if there were any against the vote and any who wished to abstain. The Resolution was passed by a majority . 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 12

i Chairman Abhnash then announced that she had her final sealed envelope which she opened and t

n declared that the result of the Secret Ballot for 2nd VDG was Lion Jaap de Jonge had been voted in

e as 2nd VDG for 105 CW 2019-2020 . v

n Chairman Abhnash thanked all the candidates and asked 2nd VDG Elect Jaap to address Convention. o

C Jaap made his thank you speech.

l

a Chairman Abhnash opened the question and answer session by asking if there were any questions from u Convention attendees. One question regarding the naming of the District was asked by 1st VDG Lion n

n Neil Chisholm 105M who wondered why the various names for the new District that had been put forward A

at the Cricket Ground meeting had been ignored. Simon Moss responded to the question saying that at

W the time of asking for the names it was believed that Lions would be allowed to choose the name for the

C new District. However on further investigation that was not the case and that the first opportunity to the 5

0 change the name would be only permitted at the 1st District Convention of 105CW. 1

t A second question was asked about the twinning projects and in particular North Sea Lions and why c i

r hadn’t the vote taken place to continue these projects whilst Lions were gathered at this Convention. It t

s had been felt that this was not voted on at today’s Convention as there was a feeling that it may detract i

D from todays main propose and it would mean asking Clubs to promise money which was felt to be unfair. 105CW will propose that the new District continues with North Sea Lions and the Medico Project at their first Convention. DGE Ian asked for an informal vote with a show of hands and the majority of Convention indicated that they were in favour to continue with both projects even though SL has a cost implication for Clubs. Final observation from Paul Jolly of Solihull Lions Club 105M that the new Districts give consideration to drop the word Club when we introduce ourselves externally as this continues to confuse us with various sports clubs. Melissa Murphy of Sandwell Lions Club 105M asked DGE Ian to consider the shadowing of jobs on cabinet so that there is a natural progression to take over positions on cabinet and provide a better understanding how to become a Cabinet Officer. DGE Ian said he would give this some consideration. Chairman Abhnash bought the Q and A session to a close and thanked everybody for organising an excellent Convention. Chairman Abhnash handed over to Steward Sherman-Kahn DG 105M to make the closing remarks. Stewart thanked everybody involved with pulling the day together and the staff at the Chase Hotel including the independent scrutineer and Convention closed at 16.00. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 13

t Expansion of Young Leaders in Service Programme c i r

t Proposed and Seconded by District 105CW Cabinet. s i This convention resolves to request the Multiple District to introduce a D complimentary programme to Young Leaders in Service aimed at 8-11 year olds. Explanatory Note We have become aware of several clubs who work with junior/primary schools where children in years 5 and 6 are involved in community activities but are too young to be included in YLIS. At the moment individual clubs are creating their own schemes but it would be better if there were an official scheme. It is expected that Lions will gain access to more junior schools through the vision screening programme. A service related programme would be a useful tool to either expand that access or to gain access before introducing vision screening.

Resolution 2 Student Dues Proposed and Seconded by District 105CW Cabinet. In the Constitution of District 105CW, add to the end of the first sentence contained within Article VIII, Section 1, the words “PROVIDED THAT no per capita dues to defray such District expenditure shall be collected in respect of any member who is a student, as defined by Lions Clubs International on the 1st July in any year”. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 14

n Explanatory Note o i In many Districts in UK and further afield, the formation of Campus Lions t

n Clubs has been a valuable policy in the efforts to attract younger members, e

v to examine new ideas, and to raise the profile of Lions generally. We now have n several possible opportunities to form Campus Lions Clubs in District 105CW o

C and we must be in a position to take advantage of these opportunities.

l However, students usually find it difficult to meet the dues normally required a

u of Lions members. To alleviate this, dues concessions are given to students n

n by Lions Clubs International, and by Multiple District 105. To further help the

A situation, many Districts waive dues for student members (whether in Campus

Clubs or elsewhere), and your District Cabinet unanimously proposes that W

C District 105CW should do likewise. 5 0 1

D Proposed and Seconded by District 105CW Cabinet. This Convention resolves that District 105CW will twin with Lions District 103NIE Normandy under the same outline as the previous Twinning arrangement between District 105W and District 103NIE (Normandy, France). Explanatory Note In 1976 the Districts of 105W & 103NIE formalised a twinning agreement for the mutual benefit of both Districts: By having a twinning Charter between their two Districts. By this signing, they commit themselves to: - organize once a year minimum a friendly meeting including reflections between the Districts’ Cabinets or between appointed delegations during Districts’ Conventions. - Encourage meetings between Lions members and Clubs that, by their actions will support the twinning. - Maintain and expand the sending of used spectacles for recycling by MEDICO LIONS CLUBS FRANCE Le Havre. MEDICO provide the District 105W glasses prescription, so that 105W will provide targeted assistance to visually disadvantaged people of our world. And in general: - Convene joint or reciprocal actions to help the human community that will promote understanding of each other. In this way they practice together the two essential qualities of our association: FRIENDSHIP and SERVICE. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 15

A North Sea Lions (NSL)

W Proposed by District Cabinet and Seconded by PDG Lion John Bush. C

5 This Convention wishes to apply for membership of the NSL Alliance and 0

1 accepts the Covenant rules.

t

c Explanation i r

t NSL was formed as a co-operation between Districts in countries bordering s i the North Sea almost 40 years ago. It was formalised in 1998 with a Covenant D listing the rules and obligations relating to NSL. Within the Covenant is an OBLIGATION for each District to contribute €80 per club to a central fund that would be spent on approved projects. Please note that all the clubs in these districts can propose a project (in the developing world) and receive the large amount that is available, enabling clubs to undertake very large projects. The obligation in 105CW by asking each Club to donate £100 each year. In order to collect the required amounts this is the absolute minimum. All donations to NSL are from the Club Charity Account . The cost to the District is an annual contribution to the expenses of the NSL Officer. This was £600/year in 105M. It covers travel in the District and the annual board meeting which is normally abroad. Although the District is much larger, it is proposed to leave the compensation the same in 105CW. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 16

o This convention resolves that, in order to ensure the approved administrative C

l expenses of District 105CW for the fiscal year 2020/21, the Annual Subscription a will remain at £9.00 p.a. per Lion Member. u

n The Subscription to be payable in two (2) instalments of £4.50 on 1st July n

5 Explanation

0 Our District is fortunate that we have a legacy from the old Districts (although 1

Lion Richard Williams 105CW Candidate for District Governor 2020-21

n I am a member of Kidderminster & District Lions Club, having o i previously been a member of Leominster Lions Club in District W. t

n I have been a Lion for 27 years now, having started life as a Leo in e

v Hereford Leo club. n

o I was Leo Club President twice and also District Leo President. I have C

l previously been Club President three times; twice with Leominster a Lions Club and once for Kidderminster & District Lions Club. I have u

n also been Zone Chair. n A

I am currently 1st VDG MD105 CW. I have also served as a MD Youth Exchange Officer for

W eight years, firstly as MD105 Youth Exchange Outwards from 2005 to 2008 when Lions Youth

C Exchange Inwards & Outwards MD Posts were combined. I held the post for the next three years. 5

0 I was very proud during this time to receive two International Presidents Leadership Medals, one 1

t in 2009-2010 presented by International President Lion Eberhard J Wirfs, & by International c

i President Lion Wing-KunTam in 2011-2012. It was a great pleasure to receive these Leadership r t Medals, but that is not why I am a Lion. s i

D One of the greatest pleasures during my time in Lions is the friends I have made & hope to make. We, as Lions, must support our youth and we have some excellent youth projects. But what I must thank Lions for most is through Leo’s meeting the love of my life Lion Jackie, who after 24 years of marriage I still love - not sure if she says the same. We have a twenty-year-old son Harry, who is studying IT at University at Aberystwyth. It has been great to visit over fifty Clubs in the last two years, you should be proud of all you do for others. Three points I always make when I visit a Club, firstly are we happy Lions, because its though our happiness as a Lion we will keep doing all that we can. Secondly I promote what the DG wants to say, this is usually our great service projects, remember through service membership comes. Thirdly I congratulate Clubs which have an Almoner, as I feel as we care about our communities we must care about ourselves, our members & families, or I call them our blood, without blood we do not function. I have been a Breeding Adviser for a Bovine Genetics company for 26 years, having been brought up on a dairy farm, I call on dairy farms in the area of the Midlands & South Wales. Interests outside Lions is singing, having sung with Hereford Police Choir, once singing with Dame Shirley Bassey. I also have a keen interest in promoting & encouraging a national link which has been established between National Federation of Young Farmers & Lions of MD105, this has great potential but must be treated with tender loving care. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 19

n I hope you can look back on this year so far and find it in you to e

v promote me to 1st VDG. n

o Born in the Netherlands, having lived in a number of countries, in one C

l of them picked up (now Lion) Claire, ended in the UK in 1996. June

a 2012, I joined Shirley Lions in Solihull. It is a dynamic club and soon u

n I was swept up, joining a variety of committees. I was Fundraising n Chair, Club President and currently Membership Officer. A

W I joined the 105M Cabinet in 2014 when I became Editor of the District Newsletter. In 2015 I

C also became North Sea Lions (NSL) Officer for the District. I was Chair of 105M Zone C, now 5

0 renamed Zone 7 till the end of M. I think that if there was a highlight in my Lions career so far, it 1

was the awarding to the zone of the Queens Award of Voluntary Service. Probably the zone is not t

c much different from other zones, but to me it is the best zone ever and I was immensely proud i r

t we were recognised for the great work we do together. s i

D NSL, Zone, working together, we can move mountains. That is why I am so excited about E, M and W having come together in CW. I know we were happy a year ago in our old districts, but now, we can do new things. Often, we hear, “we want change” . Now, here is change. To me it is a red flag to a bull. Get it on. Together we will make things happen. W collected spectacles for France from 50 clubs? Now we are 90! Go over in a van? No, we’ll need a truck! NSL, during M’s days, was a co-operation between 11 Districts from the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. I am by some strange situation still NSL Chair. It is my desire to convince 105CW of the benefits of NSL and join NSL. And that is Lions for me. I believe we are strongest when we work together and in my short Lions career, it is those situations where we co-operate, I feel the happiest. CW is a great new opportunity. We are pulled perhaps out of our comfort zone, but we are all Lions, clubs full of friends we never knew we had. Now we will meet a few more new friends. The club visits have started; but before that I had also some forays into old W territory with the W Convention and a Charter Lunch with Black Mountains LC. I am glad to know already a number of the CW members I was not familiar with previously. It is my aim to visit my allotted 30 odd clubs fast so I know many more of you in a short while. I am glad that meetings so far have been friendly and efficient. Visiting clubs is what I always liked. Shirley Lions had a very intensive club visit programme, winning the District Trophy kind of annually. It is what got me involved in the wider Lions family, outside the comfort zone of the club. The New District is a great new opportunity to re-energise and I believe I have the energy and ideas to support the DG and his team. Some of you indicated to me that you voted last year for me as you believed that I was the right man for the job. I hope I have delivered on your trust. I am here for you. You will not be disappointed if you vote for me. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 20

n (2017/18) and Region 2 Chair (2018/19), I was honoured to have e

I moved to Coventry in 1968 at the age of 11 from India. After my l

a GCE O levels, I completed the 4-year technical apprenticeship with u

n a Ministry of Defense Company who also sponsored my higher

n education at Coventry University. A

In 1978, I became a Freeman of the City of Coventry and, after graduating with a degree in W

C Mechanical Engineering, I married my wife Jas, Nurse Practitioner, and together we have raised

5 three wonderful children. Two of them are professionally qualified and the third is studying at an 0

1 Independent School.

i I am also the Director of a highly successful property business which I founded in 1988 and I r t have strong connections within the local community and further afield. Regarding my personal s i interests, I have trained in body building and competed at a national level. D Prior to joining Lions, I helped finance and build a village hospital in India. To this day I remain an avid supporter of several charitable organisations including, Youth Football Club Rurka Kalan Sports Academy (India), funding sport and education for 5,000 disadvantaged children. During my two years in office as Club President, I was invited to 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace. I also attended International Conventions in Chicago and Milan. I regularly travel to India to set up eye camps in remote villages; to date, over a thousand under-privileged people have been screened for eyesight problems and numerous cataract operations have been carried out in line with our Lions Clubs International global causes. The Coventry Mercia Lions Club also grew from strength to strength during my period in office, undertaking service projects and fund raising tens of thousands of pounds to help local, National and International charities which included donations to a special school for partially sighted and blind children in Zambia, Coundon Care at Allesley Park in Coventry, the Lady Godiva Trust, Coventry and the Lord Mayors’ local charities. I was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2017. I then revived the Nuneaton Lions Club in 2018 which despite a fifty-year history was facing imminent closure having no members. I was also presented with a District Governors’ Certificate of Appreciation at the District 105M handover ceremony in July 2018. In March 2019 I was awarded the International Presidents Medal for Exceptional Service to Lionism. My primary goal is to promote Lionism, increase membership throughout the District and form new Clubs. As Region Chair in 2018/19 I increased net membership by twenty-seven in my Region which was the first increase seen in fifteen years. I have personally sponsored thirty-two new members since June 2018 with more in the pipeline and I am currently working on establishing three new traditional Clubs within our District under the guidance of Senior District Officers. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:33 Page 21

As if the planning, training and preparation for the walk wasn’t enough I have recently started an undergraduate degree in Business and Tourism. n DISTRICT GOVERNOR TEAM o i t

n LION IAN GOTT - District Governor e v

n I would really like to say that it’s been a doddle to start a new District o but it hasn’t, it has been a real challenge. When forming a new Cabinet C

l most incoming District Governors have the majority there in place to a

u start with. They also start early (certainly by January) to form the new

n cabinet, rightly or wrongly, I felt that I needed to stay out of the n

A limelight and delay the start of the search for new District Officers to

allow the three District Governors to have their final Conventions and wind up the old Districts. W C

5 Bringing together the new District from three original Districts was the biggest and most

0 important challenge of all and to make everybody feel welcome and part of our new District. 1

t c

i I understood that many District Officers, who had perhaps been in the same post for 20 years r

t felt that they had done enough and this was good opportunity to call it a day, it was also an s i issue that many of the original District Offices had moved into other Districts. D Lots and lots of emails and well over 400 phone calls later, I finally pulled together this fantastic District Team that we have now. I’m pleased to say that all the Zone Chairs have worked hard to bring their Clubs together and a particular mention for 1st and 2nd Vice District Governors, Richard and Jaap who have worked to build a good team and form the District Governor’s Advisory Team. Together we have visited most, if not all of the Zone meetings with Richard taking the “lions share” . There is still a long way to go this year, the Global Action Team are working together to arrange a series of days to achieve exactly what we set out to do, “help clubs” . Help with finding new members. Help with keeping members. Help with running great meetings. Planned is near completion to hold days in six locations around the District during April & May. Following these there will be days to help with preparing Club accounts (especially those converting to CIO). All of these events will be aimed at every Lion (not just incoming officers) because we all need to be involved in growing our Clubs because it’s a fact “large Clubs attract new members more easily” . 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 24

v New role replacing my role as 2nd VDG year before, where is this time going,

n they say time only goes fast because, you are busy, so if difference between o time going fast is seeing Lions in Club, Zone, District & Worldwide doing what C

l Lions do best, serving their communities to make them a better place, there is a

u so much work to do, correct, but lets look at what we have achieved, I see this n every time I visit a Lions Club and speak to fellow Lions, n A

What would our communities be without Lions, I can tell you this is a place

W which misses us. So my fellow Lions lets keep forward one step at a time,

C remembering let’s do it with a smile, lets do it with enthusiasm & let’s keep 5

0 doing it with fellowship for ourselves & others, mindful that we must look after 1

each other, just as importantly as looking after people we never will meet, my t c

i role this year has been to support, encourage & most importantly have fun r

t doing everything. And I assure you, I did. s i So in conclusion I would rather time go quick and with my Lions friends D achieve something positive, as apposed to time going slowly & feeling guilty I could have done more, I know what I have achieved this year and feel proud I hope you feel the same. For Lions which I met this year, and have shown me friendship – Thank You, and for lions I not met yet, I can't wait to get to know you. We are a team “Team CW”. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year To keep supporting the District and Lions whenever I meet you, or just make contact with me, Something which I have learnt is that by being a Lion, I gain so much, but one thing lions are is guilty of being selfish, yes you read that right. We all gain so much by being a Lion, whether it is pride, worldwide friendship or a sense of belonging, We must tell non-Lions of our organisation, what we do and most importantly give them the chance to join with us, hopefully forging a partnership with National Federation of Young Farmers of which there are 22,000 of them, if we show ourselves in a good light we can show them what it means to be a Lion & encourage them to join us. But I call this something even bigger building our rural communities, inner cities are also important If I am elected I will next year be your DG, the greatest honour a group of people can bestow upon me, but I don’t know all the answers but together we can learn from each other. To take our organisation to greater heights. But remembering to do it with a smile . 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 25

Sadly the old District 105M who have achieved a 100% return for the past 5 years, I am still waiting for 13 Clubs to return their statements. Having been their H&S Officer for the past 6 years, I am to say the least very disappointed with this return. I am also still waiting for 13 Clubs in the old District 105W. I shall be chasing these clubs to ask whether they have a problem with signing the SMS Statement of Intent. If so to contact me for any help I can offer. There is one Club who have an issue with the SMS SoI, which has been referred to the MD105 Health & Safety Officer Lion Tim Dixon. There are also 4 other Midland Clubs still to return their Statements, who I shall also being chasing as to why they have not returned. DAVID M cKIRDY - CIO Mentor Progress achieved since the start of District 105CW A few clubs have converted their Club and Charitable Trust in to a CIO during this Lionistic Year, a few others are in the process of completing their application with the aim of completion before the end of June. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year Clubs are encouraged to convert to CIO although at this stage it is not mandatory. There are financial advantages in that after conversion Clubs will be able to claim Gift Aid on Membership Dues. The other main benefit is that all activities are carried out within the CIO which means that Trustees and Club Officials are covered for insurance purposes in respect of all activities. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 32

e SIMON MOSS - Global Service Team Leader v

n Progress achieved since the start of District 105CW o

C I am grateful to the GS Team who have worked hard to deliver all our Service

l

a programmes. The enthusiasm and commitment to providing Service to our

u communities is amazing. n

n We have said many times that, if we get ‘Service’ right, we will attract members. A

The programmes we offer and undertake are so good that individuals will want

W to be associated with us. C

5 The problem remains - we do not publicise what we do, either internally, via

0 MyLion, or externally, using whatever media is available to us. 1

t The amount of service that is reported is remarkable: thousands of hours on c i

r hundreds of projects. But, think what it could be if 100% of Clubs reported their t

s activities instead of the 66% that do? i

D We started this Lions’ year in a good place and have built on that. Clubs are responding strongly to our five causes - Fight against Diabetes, Protecting the Environment, Relieve Hunger, Improving Eye Care and Eye Health, Supporting Childhood Cancer Initiatives

LINDA CROSS - Sight Officer Progress achieved since the start of District 105CW In advance of World Sight Day, I circulated ideas that Clubs could use to highlight the day. I also offered Lions Eye Health Programme literature that was in my possession and several Clubs took up my offer. The Lions plea for funds for the programme of Sight Cameras for use to screen children’s eyes in India and parts of Africa was also sent to Clubs throughout the District. These funds were to be doubled by the Government Aid Department. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year I have my own ideas for the forthcoming year, including encouraging Clubs to use every event to persuade the public to have eye tests. Information about Sight Villages will be researched and the locations and dates will be circulated. As yet the MD Sight Officer has not been in touch and so any new initiatives have not been communicated. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 33

Many people are bemused about the existence of Lioness Clubs. Like Lions, W

C our members work hard in their communities, contributing many service hours

5 and raising funds. We also contribute to several of the Lions projects. Our 0

c individuals, whilst serving the needs of the local community and the wider i r

t world”. s i Please feel free to contact me about any of the following: D • If anyone has any questions about Dursley Lioness Club, or Lioness Clubs in general. • If there is anything you feel our members may be able to help with. • If there is any information you would like to pass onto our members. • Or anything else you can think of. I am sorry to miss this first Convention for 105CW. Unfortunately, it clashes with our own MD105 Lioness Clubs Conference in Colchester. As I am an Officer on their Committee, and a nominee for MD105 Deputy Chairman, my presence is required. I shall do my utmost to attend in 2021.

n Progress achieved since the start of District 105CW e

v This is a new position that has been created by our District Governor, Lion Ian

n Gott, to increase membership numbers in existing Clubs and to form new Clubs. o

C The District membership at the beginning of July 2019 was 1712; but, at the

l

a end of November 2019, it had dropped to 1704. We have recruited 67 members

u and lost 75. Some of these lost members have moved onto ‘higher service’ n

n over which we have no control; but others could potentially have been retained A

by their own Clubs with the support of the Global Membership Team and the

W District Governor’s Team.

C In our District list of 91 Clubs, only 6 have been chartered in the last 25 years, 5

0 with the most recent being Coventry Mercia Lions formed over six years ago. 1

t It is a huge undertaking and a lengthy process. c i

r I have identified some locations and made local contacts in those areas where t

s we have a good chance of success. I am currently working on forming four i

D new Clubs, in the following locations: - Coventry - Leamington Spa - Birmingham - Cardiff Meetings have taken place in Coventry and Leamington Spa with small groups of people in an effort to increase their numbers so that new Clubs can be formed. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year I have asked our incoming District Governor, Lion Richard Williams, to allow me to continue in this role for the next Lions year 2020/2021. The plan is to charter at least two new Clubs before the end of June 2020 and increase the net membership for our District 105CW. - To continue to support the development and promote the uptake of new initiatives in Campus Clubs, Young Farmers Project and New Voices initiative. These initiatives can provide an exciting and interesting aspect to Membership and offer the opportunities we need to develop and grow our District. C • I contacted my team and filled the Young Ambassador Officer post in late August.

l • I attended the online GST meetings. a

u • I have contacted the District Treasurer to check cost of Youth Projects and they will n continue to be funded as in the past. n

A • As a result of attending the MD Young Ambassador Meeting at HQ where there was a de-brief of last year’s finals, discussions on where Clubs are finding their Young W Ambassadors, myself and the Young Ambassador Officer gained valuable insight C

5 into the judging process which was very helpful and was immediately passed on to 0 Club who had communicated that they were in the process of finding a candidate. 1

t • I have attended the Youth Exchange MD Meeting at HQ with the Youth Camp c i Director where there was a de-brief of last year’s camp and plans were made for r t the organisation of the hosting and Youth Camp elements. s i • I have communicated with Jess Young Leaders In Service (YLIS) on several D occasions and she knows how to do her role and she knows I am available if she needs anything. She attended the YLIS MD meeting. 6 Clubs so far this year have requested certificates and total number of participants stands at 72. No new Clubs have started the project this year. • I have advertised the Young Ambassador Competition several times on the 105CW Facebook page. • I have made and displayed information on Youth Projects at Autumn Forum. • I have supported my two officers in their role through regular communication and liaised with MD Officers if I did not know the answers. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year • I will be attending the District Final of the Young Ambassador in January and the MD Final on Sunday 23rd February and support in any way needed. • I am looking forward to being involved in this year’s Youth Camp in Worcester in July as a staff member. • Building on the success of this year’s Young Ambassador Competition I will continue to promote it to the Clubs in the District, so they are always on the lookout for potential candidates. • I will continue to promote YLIS and other Youth Projects. We have 2 Leos Clubs in District at the moment and it would be great to see more formed. • I have been Youth Team Chair for 3 years and have enjoyed my experience, but I feel it’s time for someone new to take the reins and develop our work on Youth Projects even further. A fresh face will bring forward new ideas and this will benefit everyone, I will support them in every way to ensure Youth Projects are promoted and celebrated as the new District grows. I would encourage anyone with an interest in Youth Projects to put their names forward for next year’s team as not all the posts were filled this year. • Whoever is the Young Ambassador Officer next year should aim to get District Finals back into November to avoid clashing with mock exams in January. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 45

Post re-districting, we haven’t seen any “new” Clubs participating in YLiS from the combined old M and W Districts. The first six months of this year have seen 6 Clubs requesting certificates. This is the same as the combined figures for last year for the same period, although the number of individual participants is down from 92 to 72. YLiS Guidelines, and relevant forms, have been updated and are now compliant with current Data Protection legislation. These are all available on the MD website. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year I would love to see more Clubs getting involved. There is a plan to visit more Zones and start the scheme in some more areas. The scheme seems like a lot of hard work for Clubs but once you find willing young people it is such an easy thing to set up and you really are benefitting the young people around you and potentially creating a new set of young Lions. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 46

The Youth Camp is also in our District at New College Worcester from 31st July to the 8th August 2020 . Anyone who can host please email me at: [email protected] Zone Chairs please note it is a wonderful way of getting your zone to work together and share the experience of hosting an international leader of the future. It is a brilliant Zone Project and works well with someone with spare bedrooms putting them up and Clubs taking it in turns to pick them up, feed them and show them their part of the world, just don’t all feed them traditional fish and chips! There is a cost but with prior approval of your Lions Club it can be claimed from the Club Charity Account as this is a Lions International Youth Project. If someone in your Club wants to host but has financial difficulties and the Club will not support them, please contact me for advice. I also need to put together an airport team to meet and greet them on the 21st July at Birmingham International Airport. Again, please contact me on the above email. Clubs need to understand that the word ‘sponsored by’ should be changed to ‘endorsed by’ when sending a student outward. The Club are not expected to pay for it, most Youth Exchange students self-fund, you are only saying that the student is a good citizen of the UK. 2020 District CW Convention Programme.qxd:Layout 1 08/02/2020 18:34 Page 47

i Progress achieved since the start of District 105CW r t As I did not come back into my role until October, (I had left the role at end of s i my 3 year tenure under the old 105W District), it has taken a bit of time due to D work & family commitments to get back into the role. Also the last couple of months have been a little busy in my own Club, with helping to organise an event & helping on other activities. For my sins, I am the Club H&S Advisor, so have been involved in carrying out & reviewing Risk Assessments for those events. One of my Clubs, Llantwit Major & Cowbridge Lions Club, has kindly agreed to host a Social Zone Evening on the 8th of February. Overview of Direction for the forthcoming year I will be asking other Clubs in Zone if two of them can organise two further Zone evenings, hopefully one in April & one to finish off in June. I intend to start my Club visits this month & intend to visit every Club in Zone by the year end.

Brain Tumour Research

More children and adults under the age of 40 die from a Brain Tumour than any other cancer. Join the fight and help us raise £1million over the next 4years. We are just about on target, but need your help to continue the trend to success. Let our Brain Tumour Research Project Lead, Lion Fran Stary know what events you are holding and how much you are raising for the cause at [email protected]

Child Sight UK MD105 Child Vision Screening Programme We have now completed three trials, screened 670 young people and issued 73 referral letters, meaning that 10.9 % of all those screened needed further assessment by healthcare professionals. The initial feedback from these schools has been very positive and a number of young people referred to the optician are under complex medical investigations. Watch out for updates in the next few months on the training opportunities within your District as we start to roll out the screening programme across MD105. This is a great opportunity for Lions Clubs to engage with their local community & schools, and to raise awareness of one of our five core service activities.
