The Eveson Charitable Trust THE EVESON CHARITABLE TRUST GRANTS AWARDED 2017/2018 THE EVESON CHARITABLE TRUST Trustees J. Martin Davies David P. Pearson OBE Bill Wiggin M.P. Louise Woodhead Richard E.K. Mainwaring (Chairman) Judith Millward The Rt. Revd. Richard Frith Bishop of Hereford Vivien Cockerill Tamsin Clive DL) Administrator Alex D. Gay Address 45 Park Road Gloucester. GL1 1LP Tel: 01452 501352 Fax: 01452 302195 Email: [email protected] Introduction The Trust was registered on 26 January 1994 under the terms of the Will of Mrs Violet Eveson. The residue of Mrs Eveson’s estate of just over £49 million formed the initial capital of the Trust. Organisations are eligible to submit applications for support if their application falls within the objects and policies of this Trust which are described on the next page. The Trustees are unable to consider applications that do not fall within the objects and policies of this Trust. The majority of the Trust's grants are given to registered charities. However, the Trust also provides some support to statutory bodies directly or indirectly for projects for which the statutory body has no available statutory funding. The Trustees' preference is for enhancement of services rather than for provision of what they consider to be basic needs. Before making grants to statutory bodies, the Trust obtains written confirmation from the statutory body that no public funding is available towards the need for which application has been made. During the year ended 31 March 2018 the Trust made 324 grants (2017: 290 grants) totalling £2,428,480 (2017: £2,015,864). Grants given by the Trust vary in amount but the average size of grants in 2017/2018 was around £7,500 (2016/2017: £6,900). Details of grants are provided in this report. 2 THE EVESON CHARITABLE TRUST OBJECTIVES, POLICIES AND GRANT MAKING PROCEDURE Extract from the Will of Mrs Violet Eveson "A Charitable Trust Fund upon trust to apply the income and all such part or parts of the capital for or towards such charitable purposes and to make donations to such charitable institution or institutions whose activities are confined to or primarily undertaken in the United Kingdom for the support or relief of the physically handicapped (including the blind and deaf), mentally handicapped, hospitals and hospices, children in need whether disadvantaged or physically or mentally handicapped, the elderly, the homeless and for medical research into problems associated with any of the foregoing at such times and in such manner as the Trustees may in their absolute discretion think fit". Geographical restriction imposed on grants The policy of the Trustees is to make grants to charitable institutions for the benefit of the residents of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and the county of West Midlands (the county of West Midlands comprising Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and the metropolitan boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall). In the case of medical research projects, the Trustees will consider applications for projects to be wholly or mainly carried out in the above geographic area. Applications from individuals The Trustees are unable to consider applications for support from individuals and it is their policy not to consider applications submitted by charitable institutions on behalf of individuals. Grant making procedure The Trustees meet quarterly, in mid-March and the beginning of July, October and January. Applications can only be considered if they are on the Trust's standard Application for Support form which can be obtained from the Administrator at the Trust's office in Gloucester. The Application for Support form must be completed and returned (together with a copy of the latest annual report and accounts of the applying organisation) to the Trust's office at least six weeks before the Meeting at which the application is to be considered. The policy of the Trustees is to consider grants on an equal opportunities basis, regardless of gender, religion and ethnic background. 3 THE EVESON CHARITABLE TRUST Grants awarded during the period ended 31 March 2018. University of Kent's Institution Contextual Flag All schools on this list meet the requirements for the University of Kent's Institution Contextual Flag. The Institution Contextual Flag is given to all institutions whose data indicates that they perform in the bottom 40% nationally for KS5 results reported by the Department for Education each year. We use the average point school per entry and where data is not available, we use KS4 result, if available. In order to make this more reliable we look at data over a three year period to see if they are low performing for at least two out of the last three years. In cases where an Institution is flagged, but subsequently closes, the flag will be retained and the institution will continue to appear on the list. We use the Institution supplied by you in your UCAS application (the UCAS centre or Last Institution) to identify whether it has a Contextual Flag. Please note: independent schools are not included, neither do we have data from government agencies in Scotland and Northern Ireland and therefore these cannot be given a flag. Similarly, there may be schools or colleges which have recently changed name, status or have merged and this has resulted in no data being reported by the Department of Education , in these instances we will not be able to assess the Institution for a Contextual Flag.
