Eight transect lines (2.0km length, 0.02km width) at interval of 1.0km were located as representative samples in the Park within the Three-range stratum (riparian forest, savannah woodland and, swampy area) based on proportional to size of the strata in providing information on the primates’ species present in the Park which include Cercopithecus mona, Erythrocebus patas, Papio anubis and, Chlorocebus tantalus. Direct method of animal sighting was employed. Data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA and diversity indices. The results showed that savannah woodland strata had more number of individual species encountered (132) and the lowest was the swampy area. Also the savannah woodland had the highest species diversity and richness while the riparian forest strata had the highest number of species evenness. More so, Cercopithecus tantalus was widespread throughout the Park among other primates and Cercopithecus mona is most likely to decline even more rapidly than others since they inhabit the very tall trees. -

CROGNALE,§ MAUREEN NEITZT Received 6 November 1992; in revised form 3 February 1993 The owl monkey (Aotus tridrgutus) is the only nocturnal monkey. The photopigments of Aotus and the relationship between these photopigments and visual discrimination were examined through (1) an analysis of the tlicker photometric electroretinogram (ERG), (2) psychophysical tests of visual sensitivity and color vision, and (3) a search for the presence of the photopigment gene necessary for the production of a short-wavelength sensitive (SWS) photopigment. Roth electrophysiological and behavioral measurements indicate that in addition to a rod photopigment the retina of this primate contains only one other photopigment type-a cone pigment having a spectral peak cu 543 nm. Earlier results that suggested these monkeys can make crude color discriminations are interpreted as probably resulting from the joint exploitation of signals from rods and cones. Although Aotus has no functional SWS photopigment, hybridization analysis shows that A&us has a pigment gene that is highly homologous to the human SWS photopigment gene. This study aimed to of population composition and density of mona monkeys in LCC. Total count method using woods walk ways and perimeter road as line transects was used for the enumeration. The censuses were conducted for 27 days in October, November, and December, 2018. Counts were carried out between 06:30 and 10:30 hours for 22 days, and between 16:30 and 19:00 hours for five days. Monkeys were enumerated by counting all sighted individuals on both sides of the walk ways, and other study points. Data was subjected to analysis of variance to compare the monthly means, and statistically significant means (P < 0.05) were separated using Tukey post hoc test. -

They are an essential component of tropical biodiversity, contributing to forest regeneration and ecosystem health. Current information shows the existence of 504 species in 79 genera distributed in the Neotropics, mainland Africa, Madagascar, and Asia. Alarmingly, ~60% of primate species are now threatened with extinction and ~75% have de- clining populations. The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden’s Education Department offers a unique look at our zoo—the zoo at night. We offer three sequential overnight programs designed to build upon students’ understanding of the natural world. Within these programs, we strive to combine learning with curiosity, passion with dedication, and advocacy with perspective. By sharing our knowledge of, and excitement about, environmental education, we hope to create quality experiences that foster a sense of wonder, share knowledge, and advocate active involvement with wildlife and wild places. Overnight experiences offer a deeper and more profound look at what a zoo really is. The children involved have time to process what they experience, while encountering firsthand the wonderful relationships people can have with wild animals and wild places. The program offers three special adventures: Animal Adaptations, Wolf Woods, and Sleep with the Manatees, including several specialty programs. Activities range from a guided tour of zoo buildings and grounds (including a peek behind-the-scenes), to educational games, animal demonstrations, late night hikes, and presentations of bio-facts. -

Abstract In catarrhine primates, trichromatic color vision is associated with the presence of three opsin genes that absorb light at three different wavelengths. The OPN1LW and OPN1MW genes are found on the X chromosome. Their proximity and similarity suggest that they originated from a duplication event in the catarrhine ancestor. In this study we use the primate genomes available in public databases to study the duplicative history of the OPN1LW and OPN1MW genes and characterize their spectral sensitivity. Our results reveal a phylogenetic tree that shows a clade containing all X-linked opsin paralogs found in Old World monkeys to be related to a clade containing all X-linked opsin paralogs identified in apes, suggesting that routine trichromacy originated independently in apes and Old World monkeys. -
