The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden’s Education Department offers a unique look at our zoo—the zoo at night. We offer three sequential overnight programs designed to build upon students’ understanding of the natural world. Within these programs, we strive to combine learning with curiosity, passion with dedication, and advocacy with perspective. By sharing our knowledge of, and excitement about, environmental education, we hope to create quality experiences that foster a sense of wonder, share knowledge, and advocate active involvement with wildlife and wild places. Overnight experiences offer a deeper and more profound look at what a zoo really is. The children involved have time to process what they experience, while encountering firsthand the wonderful relationships people can have with wild animals and wild places. The program offers three special adventures: Animal Adaptations, Wolf Woods, and Sleep with the Manatees, including several specialty programs. Activities range from a guided tour of zoo buildings and grounds (including a peek behind-the-scenes), to educational games, animal demonstrations, late night hikes, and presentations of bio-facts. -

We conducted multiple short-term studies of the impact of zoo visitors on 16 animal species and found that 90.9% of the mammal species and 60.0% of the fish species studied exhibited some change in behavior related to zoo visitors. -

Their bleak accommodation is Ragunan Zoo (Jakarta) spotlessly clean and their diet is good but this is no life. Schmutzer Primate Center Some have been housed like this for seven years! And Seaworld Indonesia there is no end in site for this purgatory. Ulla is naturally Taman Safari Indonesia very frustrated and angry....and very stressed at the situation Bandung Zoo she finds her animals in. She needs help, she wants help Baturraden Zoo and worries constantly as to what will happen when she is Banjarnegara Zoo no longer there. Gembira Loka Zoo (Yogyajakarta) Solo Zoo Ulla is trying her best for her animals. She supports them Semarang Zoo with her own cash, she even has her own small team of Surabaya Zoo keepers without whom she could never manage. Ulla’s zoo is a zoo within a zoo. The public do not get to see the Thursday 15th June 2006 miserable conditions in which her animals live. SAVING Bristol WILDLIFE Zoological TOGETHER Society Strategy to 2035 Our vision Our commitment to wildlife is centuries old and born out of a desire both to better understand life on our planet and to inspire people to engage with the fascination of nature. Today our mission is focussed on saving wildlife, not alone but together with all the people that we engage and inspire. Our vision is for wildlife to be a part of everyone’s lives and for people to want to, and be enabled to, protect wildlife now and for the future. This Strategic Plan sets out our direction for the next 15 years, as we journey towards the bicentenary anniversary of Bristol Zoological Society in 2035. During this time the Society will become a more effective conservation charity that harnesses the benefits of conservation research and fieldwork, education and outreach, alongside the benefits of breeding and understanding the needs of animals, and public engagement with those animals. This period will achieve a fundamental shift to recognise the combined importance of these different aspects of the charity and a re-weighting of activity built on current and past conservation successes. Our ambitions are bold, as our challenges require a strength of vision that will ensure the long-term future of Bristol Zoological Society. 1 Zoo in Nature, Nature in the Zoo 3 Success will depend fundamentally on the move of Bristol Zoo to the Wild Place Project site and the creation of a new world-class zoo for Bristol and the West of England. Commissioner Holme called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and reviewed the meeting agenda. Commissioner Barber moved approval of the September 8 agenda, July 28 minutes, and record of correspondence. Commissioner Kincaid seconded. The vote was taken and the motion carried. Superintendent’s Report Acting Superintendent Williams reported on the following topics in both a verbal and written report available to the Board and audience. Cal Anderson Park: Mayor McGinn and his staff are strategizing with Seattle Parks and Seattle Police Department on public safety concerns at Cal Anderson Park. Recent news stories reported on a young homeless man who was beaten in the park and park visitors who were verbally assaulted. Plans include special emphasis patrols from SPD and more frequent visits by the Department’s Park Rangers. Mayor McGinn will hold a town hall at nearby Miller Community Center to address community concerns. -

The Effect of Light on the Behaviour of Captive Brown Kiwi Apteryx mantelli; Implications for Captive Management A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Conservation Biology at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand Roseanne Kate Grant 2012 iii Abstract The impact of light intensity and spectrum on the behaviour of captive brown kiwi Apteryx mantelli was examined through behavioural observation. This topic was chosen as most animals have a significant response to light and there are currently no guidelines for the light regimes of nocturnal houses or brooder rooms that house brown kiwi. In the first experiment the amount of time that a kiwi spent in enclosure areas illuminated by four different colours was observed. The behaviour of the kiwi was not affected by colour but significantly more time was spent in enclosure areas that were darker and close to the edge of the enclosure. A second experiment investigated the amount of time that eight captive display kiwi spent in areas of their enclosure based on illumination intensity; again more time was spent in darker and peripheral areas as well as in areas of moderate to high structural coverage though these factors were interacting and did not singularly explain where time was spent in the enclosure. Finally the effect of early brooder light exposure on the later outdoor emergence times of nine neonatal brown kiwi was observed. -

This provides a huge and unique opportunity for education and potential to highlight public awareness and sensitivity of the importance of nature conservation. Conservation is one of the main aims of modern zoos. If conservation is to succeed, people need to be inspired to care about and understand nature and animals and the threats they face in the wild, and building support for conservation. For this education is critical. Zoos appeal to a wide cross-section of society, and their educational mission should be to provide educational experiences for all visitors. Zoo education is far more than information and awareness. It covers a wide spectrum from inspiration to positive action.
