CLUB MEETINGS: 3rd Thursday of each month 7.00pm at Sawtell Bowling Club, Sawtell. Come early for a meal at the bistro.

LIFE MEMBERS: Don Sonter, John Budds*, Pete Richmond, Bill Baker*, Ned O‘Brien, Rob Popplewell *Deceased

Congratulations go to all the new executive members as well as the recycled familiar faces.

The Tamworth, Triples and Grafton Rallies have all been great successes and our members have been keen participants. While rallies have traditionally been for three days, the four day rally as tried by Taree is becoming more popular. Already the Triples Rally has set a new bench mark with the Rally being followed by a week-long tour leading to the Grafton Rally, but now the Rally committee has decided that there is no such thing as “too much riding” and when you check the fine print on their entry, it should be noted that

“MONDAY TO THURSDAY: Riders are to gather in the Evans Head Bowling Club Car Park for self guided rides leaving at 9:30am and/or 2pm each day”

It certainly puts the value in the rally entry fee and keeps your log book days available for even more riding! Also don’t miss one of the last rallies of the year at Hat Head. Even if you don’t wish to do an overnight rally, the Natureland Rally at Hat Head is well worth considering as it is only an hour and a half south of Coffs, so you can nip down for the day. The entry forms and details for these rallies are attached as appendices to the electronic copy of the magazine.

A big “thank you” to Roy, John and Ned for keeping the photos and articles coming for the magazine. It is only by members sending in their photos that there is any hope that the magazine can portrait even a small part of the club’s activities.

Alan Ruecroft 1940 - 20th August 2018

After a career in motor trimmer in Burwood, Sydney, Al came to Red Rock and joined the Coffs Restorers. He had a beloved Peugot car (quote Al: “If you are going to drive an old car, drive a good one”) and a variety of motorbikes. He had dabbled in dirt racing in his younger days and this was to stand him in good stead on his outback tours with members of the Club.

Al was a quiet gentleman rider, who loved outback travel and was keen organiser and participant in a number of extended desert and hard riding trips out west.

On one memorable trip, he led members to Chambers Pillar close by the famous Finke River ride and lasted for 3 weeks. The tour included Julia (North Qld), down the Plenty Highway to Trephina Gorge, then on to Alice to clean up before heading around the Mareenie Loop and on to Coober Pedy where the tour got stuck for several days due to wet weather. It was then across to WiIliam Creek on the Oodnadatta track and then to Maree through mud and slush, where Al starred by being the only rider who failed to fall off, though once he nearly came to grief in a barbed wire fence much to the amusement of those who had heard him boasting of the quality of his eyesight!

In recent years Al has attended a number of club functions including overnighters at Point Lookout (He was a keen Bushwalker and ornithologist) and morning teas, and despite a regime of dialysis, it seems he never missed a Red Rock morning tea.

Alan is survived by his son Robert and his wife, Kirsty and his grandsons, Lincoln and Elliot.

Bill Baker (Life Member) 1927-13th July, 2018

Bill was a keen and enthusiastic motorcyclist and his riding career never seemed to be hampered by the loss of a leg and his other leg requiring 2 knee reconstructions. However Bill’s riding days finished at age 80 due to other health issues, but he continued to commune with his beloved AJS single throughout the remainder of his life

Reg Henwood, John Baker, Bill Baker, Judith and Paul Van Bladel, Rob and Roy Previously Bill also owned a late model Yamaha, which served as a daily rider and took him on many club runs. Despite his retirement from riding, Bill continued to drive his restored Hillman Gazelle for many years.

Bill was a keen attendee at rallies and he and best mate in the Club, Reg Henwood, had a reputation for fun and mischief. There were also some notable excursions in search of old bikes to purchase. Bill Baker, Rob, Al and Lance

Bill is survived by his lovely wife, Val and their son(John) and his daughters and will be sorely missed by his old riding buddies. Out and About

Sunday Ride to Dorrigo, 8th July, 2018. A big ride day with 18 bikes attending and most being historically registered. The main attractions was a visit to “the hosts with the most”, John and Louise, who provided the always hungry crowd with a sumptious morning tea and a tour of their bike and timber workshops. The riders then dispersed with some heading home directly, others to Dorrigo for lunch and some down to the Federal in Bellingen to sate their thirsts. (Thanks to Ned and Roy for the photos.)

Riders partake of Louise’s excellent morning tea in the bright Dorrigo sunlight. Nigel and Sandy hear John’s wise remarks about workshop safety, while Riley watches in disbelief as his Dad and Phil continue to fiddle with machinery.

Wednesday Morning Tea at the Swiss Patisserie, Bellingen, 11th July, 2018.

Another big turn out with predominately club registered bikes and with fine weather, a most enjoyable time was had basking in the sun and partaking in fine food and drink.

(Thanks to John for the photographic evidence of the happy crowd.)

Wednesday Morning Tea at the Boardwalk Cafe, Urunga, 18th July, 2018.

Bikes fill both sides of the street, and the “table of knowledge” is overflowing with good ideas and company.

Tamworth Rally, 20th- nd 22 July, 2018

As always the ride up is well worth the effort as the scenery on the crisp Winter’s days was fantastic.

A beautiful day in the Cooplacurripa area of the Nowendoc Valley on the way to meet up with Bob and Marg at Walcha’s Aspley Arms Inn for dinner on Thursday night. The Friday ride of about 40 bikes was a good opportunity to catch up with some of the rally regulars with a short run up through Moore Creek to the Moombi area for a cuppa and back to Tamworth. The Saturday ride was a bit more serious with some 200kms. It was out to the Dungowan area, Leaving the back of the “Coffs’” house for the ride

then to Chaffey Dam for a catch up before out towards Nundle and Wallabadah for morning tea. With a cut off point for entrants of 1980, it was great to see the number of 50’s, 60’s and 70’s bikes which all seemed to travel at about the same pace, making for a good steady ride with one extended group of about 70 riders, basically travelling together. Then across via and Quipolly to Currabubula for a sumptious lunch. Then back to Tamworth to prepare for the presentation dinner. A most enjoyable evening and Justin (left) with his Norton Dominator was the sole Coffs member to hunt out a well deserved trophy.

Getting ready to leave on Saturday morning for the 200km ride.

A 1931 Rudge that won it’s class, in company with a Norton and an Ariel

Steve’s white Norton next to the category winner for the 70’s. with a very neat pair of BMW R90S in the background

The Coffs Harbour entrants were few in number, being, Steve, Ned, Rob, Nick, Margaret, Justin and Ward, but we all managed to have a great time. The distance home unfortunately meant that we skipped the Sunday ride. It was a most enjoyable rally with great organisation and friendly atmosphere and more members should consider putting it in their touring diary.

Coffs Harbour’s “Concours d'Elégance “ at the Glenreagh Timber Festival, 28th July, 2018

This event has created a recent local record with some 23 club registered bikes entering. Phil, Darren and John did the early work setting up the display with one of the shade areas and beginning the line up of bikes. The Urunga/Bellingen sub-branch turned up next after a 60km ride without a coffee break. Is this another Club record? It was then a steady flow of bikes into the line up and Rob bought the official club merchandise and set up a stall which did a steady trade and even collected a few membership dues. The Glenreagh Timber Festival was a great venue and there were many questions and visits by attendees at the bike display. Our thanks should go to the Festival organisers for the invitation to display our bikes. Our members reciproacated and enjoyed the many stalls and displays at the Festival. Also the Treasurer’s lunch subsidy proved popular with members, many choosing to subsidise the food and coffee stalls. An impressive line up

A strong showing of BMW’s nearly bought success, but Judge Rob fought off temptation and went “Breetish”!

The Outfit and Tiddlers’ Ride, 29th July, 2018

A relaxing start from Urunga at 10.30am would have allowed Coffs Riders to come down but only Dave on his R100 braved the distance to join the 4 outfits (one failed to arrive from Bellingen) In the tiddler department, Eddie turned up

on his trusty LE Velocette and took off early to beat us all down to Eungai. It was down the old highway all the way to arrive for lunch at the Eungai Buffalo farm. It was great to be joined by Sandy and Polly from Bellingen and all the way from Dorrigo, Moses and Louise. So with a dozen for lunch and buffalo meats and cheese in all the dishes, it was very tasty. The general consensus was that the coffees was even creamier! Despite the odd dark cloud, the run home was most enjoyable As Dave pointed out, “You don’t have to go fast, to have fun!!!”.

Outfits round the bend South of Macksville, followed by Dave on the R100

Eddie (possibly exceeding the speed limit?) is pursued by Ward and Rob

Eddie’s fuel bill after “screwing the throttle” on the LE Velocette.

Morning Tea at Glen’s in Bellingen, 31st July, 2018

Great riding weather ensured a good crowd to enjoy Glen’s quality egg and bacon rolls fresh from the BBQ, followed by a great array of cakes and biscuits. The “table of knowledge” moved downstairs to look at bikes while the real smart ones stayed close to the tucker.

Laura, Elaine and Lance enjoyed looking after the tea and cakes.

Sculptures in the Goal, Trial Bay, 5th August, 2018

Nine riders took off from Urunga sharp on 10am and enjoyed the ride down the

old highways and back ways to Trial Bay Goal. On arrival the bikes were sheparded up to the display area in front of the goal to become part of the 90 stong bike display of historic bikes. Later a further group of riders from the Coffs Club joined those already there but unfortunately they had lost time by going the wrong way and ending up at North Beach. The displays of sculpture inside the Goal kept us busy for nearly as long as the variety of bikes on display. The bikes were a good mix with the tiddlers (Waratahs and Acme models) as well as all the perennial favourites. Some members chose to stay for lunch at the Goal while others went to the South West Rocks Country Club and then on the way home, there was rest stop called at the Star Hotel for some of the weary. A great day out and a worth a look next year if you enjoy old bikes and/or sculpture.

Col from Taree Club bought his JAP and BSA combination and had obviously spent a bit of time on the milk crate with the polish.

Coffs members, brothers, Dan and Matt have decided to go Italian and Matt brought his Griso to prove it!

Dan has chosen to go “club plates” and is still working on his P5 Guzzi.

A nice pair of Waratahs, with another Square Ariel in the background!

Waratah motorcycles were manufactured in Sydney, , from before 1911 to around 1948, although Waratah badged motorcycles were sold into the 1950s

More tiddlers, this time from the Acme company.

The Acme motorcycle was assembled and marketed by Bennett & Wood of Wentworth Avenue, Sydney. Production began in May 1939, and was phased out in 1949.

An OK Supreme with JAP motor and a recently fitted “new muffler”. OK- Supreme was a British motorcycle manufacturer from 1899 to 1939 located in Birmingham, England. Originally a bicycle maker, the company had its own 2 stroke motors but also used other motors including JAP

Coffs Members, Holger and Margaret on the R100 and R65 respectively.

Past (1991) Coffs Harbour’s Senior Vice-President, Ian seems to be happy to be out on “parole” and going riding on such a beautiful day.

Brushgrove Pub for Lunch, 12th August, 2018

A dozen bikes lined up outside the Church in Glenreagh, and despite Ned’s

urgings, no one joined the “Glenreagh Angels” motorcycle club but everyone just had morning tea and went their different ways with only three of the bikes making it to Brushgrove Pub to partake of the excellent food.

Grafton Rally, 24th – 26th August, 2018.

A good sized crowd had gathered at the Grafton Showground by the starting time for the Friday ride out via the new jail (under construction) to Ulmarra and some 60 bikes took off with the only problem being that most were soon lost and only a few actually made it to the jail to enjoy the “great quantity of free beer” as it was so vividly described by Marshal Phil! The rest of us enjoyed ourselves and toured the country side and found a libation at the Ulmarra pub before taking a ferry ride and returning to the Grafton Showground via Southgate.

Friday night bought a welcome BBQ and a few beers under the stadium before most people retired to listen to the rain on their tents or rooves. The bikes assemble on Saturday Morning. By Saturday morning the rain had cleared, the Sun was shining and the crowd had grown including a few Coffs Harbour day trippers, so it was off to Glenreagh

Mountain Railway for morning tea. From Glenreagh, the rally rode out via Bucca

A few of the many “triples” that had come down from the Evan Head Triples Rally on the previous weekend

Road and up Solitary Island Way to the Amble Inn at Corindi for the line-up and judging by the participants, while we ordered our lunches. The ride back to

Grafton saw some light showers but not enough to really wet anyone. The rally dinner was a sumptuous affair at the Grafton Services Club with the usual raffles and presentations before the rain again set in on Saturday night. Sunday saw the rain intensify and it was a bus trip out to a nearby museum as the ride was cancelled.

Congratulations must go to Terry Ryan, Mark Schmidt, Geoff Meller and Jeff Ashenden and their helpers who managed to pull together a great rally.

Graham and “Rocket Man” are disappointed when Marshal Ken refuses their offer to swap his “scoot” for a Rocket 3!!!

5 Avonleigh Drive, Boambee East. Ph.0427-725-988 Membership Renewal

If you have not paid your membership for 2018-19, then your bikes are not registered and your membership has lapsed!

It is an RMS rule that you must be a financial member of a club to hold conditional registration. Our financial year and thus the membership year ends on 30th June, so unless your membership is paid, then your bike is unregistered from 30th June!

The Club’s constitution states that being two months overdue with membership fees, will result in a lapse of membership and the requirement to re-apply.

The current fees are $40 a member (as per the decision of the AGM) or $60 for a couple.

The fees can be paid in cash to the Treasurer, by cheque in the mail to the PO box or by direct credit to the Club’s account but make sure that you put your name and membership number in the Payee advice. The account details are: C.H. & D.M.R. Club Inc. BSB: 533-000 Account Number: 100040183 If transferring from a BCU account, include that it is an S11 account.

Membership renewal problems as described in the September, 1992 magazine!

Stuarts Point Men’s Shed – Calling All Motorcycle Riders & Two-Wheel Enthusiasts

Stuarts Point Men’s Shed invites everyone (not just riders) to a motorcycle show and lunch at Stuarts Point Workers Club on September8, 2018 for their Men’s Shed Fundraiser. Organisers expect a virtual rolling museum of old and new motorcycles to educate and amaze you and your family. Some of these machines can be over 100 years old and in original or restored condition, they are incredible.

As you can see in the photos of last years event, some of the finest machines in our region could make an appearance on the day. Some restored to “Showroom Condition” and other directly from the showroom.

The program includes; barbeque lunches, raffles, live musical entertainment and two major Bike Show prizes.

Major prizes will be awarded to winners of two only divisions, “Most Popular Old Motorcycle” being any roadworthy motorcycle or scooter thirty years or older, and “Most Popular Modern Motorcycle” being any roadworthy motorcycle or scooter not yet thirty years old. Machines may be trailered to the event but must be “road legal” with public or historic number plates. There is plenty of room for trailer parking.

Judging and voting in each category will be done by the public, each vote being one gold coin placed into a ballot box officially attached to nominated motorcycles. Entrants are encouraged to juggle, sing, tap-dance or tell jokes to win votes for their machines. There’s no limit to how much enticement and encouragement used to gain votes. The nomination fees ($4/machine) and all monies raised by voting will go directly to support the Stuarts Point Men’s Shed to fund a much-needed extension floor-slab at their workshop.

The competition nominations will open at 9:am, voting will start at noon and run until 1pm. The prize winners will be announced at around 2pm.

Men’s Sheds across the country are providing community support services to their members and communities. These services include skills training, community maintenance and cleaning services, workshop access for individuals, recycling, reuse and repair services, social networking and individual care. They also provide a good laugh over a hot cuppa and biscuits for members and visitors at regular morning tea sessions.

Be sure to bring along your appetite, Men’s Shed Chefs will be turning out plenty of barbeque treats, inside the club the Chinese Restaurant will be serving as well.

Live music supplied by “The Little Ripper Band” will begin at 11: am. These guys know just about every tune ever written so be sure to request or dedicate a tune on the day.
