Come early for a meal at the bistro. LIFE MEMBERS: Don Sonter, John Budds*, Pete Richmond, Bill Baker, Ned O‘Brien. *Deceased The good news is that we have another two years of the “Log Book Trial” with the advantage of not only being able to ride our bikes on club days and tune ups, but also for further “logged rides”. There has been no mention of an increase in fees, which is a great relief to all those members with more than one old bike. There is further information later in the magazine. The ride calendar has some shorter rides than normal in recognition of the hotter weather coming. It is also the end of the “rally season” with Natureland’s Hat Head rally being a great end to the local rally calendar. Now there are a few months off until the next major rally, Taree in early March. There is a busy year of rallies coming up, so check “Up and Coming Events” at the end of the ride calendar and plan ahead and reserve the time. With the opening of the new expressway around Macksville and Nambucca, it will give more the opportunities for rides to the South. Remember, if you have any suggestions for types of rides, destinations for rides or overnight or longer rides, please send them in or the calendar will become a bit stale! Also on the topic of rides, an extended tour of South Australia is being planned for June as previous runs have experienced hot weather, so this time it should be cooler?! See the article later in the magazine. Nick Hiller 6655-3690 Email: [email protected] 2/311 Mastracolas Road, Coffs Harbour. Ph: 02 6650 9922 Out and About Natureland’s Hat Head Rally, 3rd – 5th November, 2017. I've been attending these events for some 35 years and have come to realise that each has its own unique characteristics. Talking to club members, I get the strong impression that this is as much a social event as a motorcycle rally. Indeed, we have been staying at the same holiday house in Creek Street for many years. I've included a photo below of our club machines in the backyard. Of special interest this year was the illustrated map of the Saturday ride. We all enjoyed this run immensely as it showcased the hinterland of Kempsey unknown to most of us. First stop was the showground at Willawarrin where a group of young ladies displayed another form of riding. Then on to Crescent Head for a very good lunch complete with ocean views. By the time we got back to Hat Head and under cover the heavens opened and delivered the forecast storm: the organisers should take a bow! Our only trophy was granted to Mr Pop for the longest distance ridden and I should report that he was immensely pleased with himself. The Sunday run took us by the old Pacific Highway to Stuart's Point and then on home; once again defeating the weather, but only just. All in all a first rate rally, well organized and run. Whoever arranged the weather deserves a medal. Article from Ned. Harley Heaven at Natureland’s Hat Head Rally th Club Christmas Party at Bongil Bongil, 10 December. A most successful day, in no small part due to the efforts of Rob Popplewell, who oversaw the organisation for the day and to Laura McKenzie who did much of the catering. There was a turn- out of about 50 members and their families. Many members rode, so there was plenty of machinery to inspect in the car park. Again, well done to the organisers for a great day. Graham’s pride and joy, the workhorse Ariel VH Hayden’s Le Mans. 3 Gerard Dr, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450 th Sunday Ride to Smithtown, 17 December. A big start of about 16 bikes, but the numbers dwindled due to the call of coffee in Nambucca and by Smithtown, it was a small crew but all the bikes, bar one lone scooter, were club plated. The route down took in the last time that the highway will go through Macksville and then went out the back ways and along the Macleay River into Smithtown Pub for an early and most Club Plated Bikes at Smithtown Pub enjoyable lunch. It was then along the Eastern side of the Macleay River via Jerseyville to the Riverside Tavern in South West Rocks where we said “Hi” to the Natureland Club at their Christmas dinner. An enjoyable ride with no problems, interesting roads, fine weather and good company. Homebase Centre, Pacific Hwy, Coffs Harbour. The Log Book Trial Below is the letter from the RMS, regarding the two year extension of the trial. The Fifth Inaugural Christmas Ride to South Australia. For the past 4 years, there has been a Christmas run of about 2-3 weeks duration. The format has been basically the same, with only the ride route changing. The format is that there is a starting point, where participants can leave their vehicles (vans, cars and trailers used for transporting gear and bikes), then the ride leaves with a support vehicle and bike trailer. The riders take a turn each driving the vehicle and put their bike on the trailer. This means everyone gets to ride for most of the tour and only miss one day and there is still back-up and some limited space for gear to be carried. If someone breaks down, then they become the driver! There is a route guide and an accommodation list provided and riders can use the list to book accommodation or make their own arrangements as suits. The daily mileage is only about 300kms which allows a relaxed pace for older bikes and plenty of time for sightseeing and exploring. The rides are very flexible and participants can join or leave the tour at any time and do additional rides as it suits. There will be “slow days” when participants can catch up on washing or opt out of the ride for a “rest”. This year the tour is being postponed to June as the weather should be cooler and the daily mileage more suited to the shorter days. It is proposed to leave Coffs around 3rd June and returning on 24th June, so a full three weeks. If people wish to travel to Adelaide and transport their bikes, then there is a “parking place” to leave their vehicles prior to coming on the rally. Those wishing to ride the whole way from Coffs, have about 4 days to ride down from the 3rd June and similarly will leave Adelaide around 20th for a 4 day ride back to Coffs. It is intended the rally will visit Wilpena Pound, have a train ride on the Pichi Richi railway at Quorn and go through the Clare Valley, then using a base in Adelaide, tour the vineyards of South Australia and go to the Birdwood museum, and then do a tour of Kangaroo Island. The detail is still being firmed up, but I would appreciate input and expressions of interest so that the tour can be organised to suit as much as possible and the amount of accommodation can be worked out. If you send me an expression of interest, then I can send you the proposed ride route for your perusal and comment. The number of participants will be limited to about 15-20 people as this suits the accommodation and back-up capacity.
