COMMENCEMENT Spring 2020 Spring 2020 4 UNIVERSITY OF IOWA COMMENCEMENT LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Congratulations on your graduation from the University of Iowa! Today is an exciting and proud day in the life of the university—when our students, their friends and family, and their teachers and mentors celebrate the completion of a University of Iowa degree. One of the greatest badges of pride you will wear from this day forward is your degree from the University of Iowa. The contributions you will make to the world will be rooted in the unique character of an Iowa education, so when you say you are an Iowa graduate, that carries a very special meaning. Your graduation is occurring during an extraordinary time in history. The pandemic has changed the way we do everything for the time being, including how we are celebrating your commencement. Even as we recognize your college graduation in a different way, our pride in your accomplishments remains as strong and bright as ever. We stand together as Hawkeyes today with dignity and joy as always, and I believe with even greater strength and purpose. On this day we must honor you at a distance, but our virtual handshake is just as warm and hearty as if we had gathered on campus. And when our campus opens again, we hope you will visit us so we can give you that handshake you so richly deserve in person. No matter where you work and live in the years ahead, we encourage you to stay connected and involved through ForIowa.org. There you will find information and inspiration to keep you connected to the UI as we continue to combat the current crisis, and after it has passed, you will learn how to reconnect with fellow Hawkeyes at home and elsewhere. You will find locations of Iowa Clubs across the country (and world!) that provide good company for game watches and service activities. You can also access alumni resources and networking opportunities, stay up to date on university happenings by subscribing to the Iowa Magazine and newsletter, and join alumni affinity groups to stay in touch with alumni who share some of your most important Iowa experiences. When we are once again able, we will come visit you as well! Members of the university community travel the country every year to bring the campus to your community, to share updates about the exciting advances and innovations happening at the university, and to give Hawkeyes a chance to gather with each other and celebrate their Iowa pride. As you transition to the next phase of your life, we will continue to think of you as part of our university family and hope to always be an important part of yours. And of course, we hope you will come back to visit us when you can. Again, congratulations on all your achievements. And remember, Once a Hawkeye, Always a Hawkeye! J. Bruce Harreld President SHARE YOUR MEMORIES USING #UIOWAGRAD20 5 Hawkeyes standing together, apart Spring semester 2020 was a strange one, to be sure. And a scary one. As the novel coronavirus spread across the country and worries intensified, campus life seemingly changed overnight. Students were asked to make sacrifices mid-semester to maintain health and safety. Instruction was moved online, residence halls were shuttered, internship and study abroad programs were suspended, athletic competition was cancelled, stages went dark. And—in a gut punch for many graduating students—traditional spring commencement ceremonies were called off. Despite the challenges set before them, however, Hawkeyes stepped up: A senior in history and secondary education rallied a group of her healthy peers to run errands for and deliver groceries to community members whose immune systems were compromised, while a senior biomedical engineering student created a website mapping food and meals available at area schools, food banks, and soup kitchens. Medical students transitioned their in-person mobile clinic to a telehealth clinic so they could treat uninsured and underinsured patients while also practicing social distance. And many student employees of UI Hospitals & Clinics, from undergraduate nursing assistants to fourth-year doctoral candidates in pharmacy, continued to report for duty. Several Cambus student employees switched gears and took shifts driving delivery trucks to provide clean linens to UI Hospitals & Clinics. They even helped with folding laundry. Faculty members mentored peers on technology and how to transition to online instruction. One drove across the state to deliver a laptop to a student in need. Countless individuals and teams across campus secured or constructed personal protective equipment, including face shields, face masks, surgical caps, and other items, to boost the supply needed by health care workers. Alumni and friends of the university answered the call for donations to the Student Life Emergency Fund, helping students adversely affected by the pandemic, as well as the UI Health Care Staff Emergency Fund, providing assistance to caregivers with urgent needs. Research teams across campus, meanwhile, rushed to aid in the crisis, whether investigating treatments for COVID-19 or designing computer models to predict the spread of the disease or assisting educators in the effective delivery of online instruction. These are just some examples of how the Hawkeye family united in an inspiring show of strength and resilience. Coming together for the greater good—that’s the Hawkeye way. Decades from now, when 2020 graduates recall their time as University of Iowa students, their last semester will likely stand out for many reasons, not the least of which will be due to the lessons learned during this global pandemic. The sacrifices made were not for naught—in fact, they illustrated what is possible when we collaborate, even in isolation. What is possible when we stand together, even when we’re apart. Our graduates will always be Hawkeyes. And they will be better for it. 12 UNIVERSITY OF IOWA COMMENCEMENT ABOUT THE #34 BEST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD UNIVERSITY OF IOWA REPORT The University of Iowa is one of the nation’s premier public research universities, with 32,535 students from 114 countries and all 50 states.
