Succeeding the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 and the resulting immigration of Jews, the Palestinians living within the newly set borders of Israel were reduced to a minority. While there are various fiction and documentary films produced on the general issue of the Israeli-Palestinian contention, the Palestinian minority and their ongoing struggles to coexist within a hegemonic host state are often neglected.

She refuses, and his violent rebuttal leaves all of the women shaken. • Yashwantrao Chavan
Yashwantrao Chavan MESSAGE Shri Yashwantrao Chavan, born on 12th March 1913 in a small village called Devrashtra in the then Satara district, hailed from a rural family with modest means. His father was a bailiff who succumbed to the epidemic of plague when Yashwantrao was only four years old. He was brought up by his mother under difficult circumstances. He grew up in a family where social and political reforms were a subject of daily debate and discourse. He spent about 15 months in jail but the period of incarceration turned out to be a blessing in disguise. There were many eminent scholars who were also in the same jail and they conducted virtual classes and turned the jail into a university. It was in the jail that he first absorbed knowledge of political ideologies and classical literature. When India's independence was on the horizon, he won the election to the Legislative Assembly in 1946 and began his political career as Parliamentary Secretary to the Home Minister, Shri Morarji Desai. Soon he got involved in the vortex of movement for the Samyukta Maharashtra. Eventually, he became the Chief Minister of bilingual State of Bombay in 1956. He made a name for himself with his capacity for work, candid dialogue with opposition and administrative acumen. The State of Maharashtra was formed on 1st May 1960 and Yashwantrao became the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In November 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organizational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces.

  • In Between Written & Directed by Maysaloun Hamoud Israel/France 2016
In Between Written & directed by Maysaloun Hamoud Israel/France 2016. 101 min. (15) Mouna Hawa, Sana Jammelieh, Shaden Kanboura Maysaloun Hamoud’s first feature looks at social politics and change through the intimate lens of daily life. On the surface, the three young Palestinian women sharing an apartment in the Yemenite section of Tel Aviv have little in common. But what divides them is less significant than what unites: Each, in her own way, is struggling to free herself from stifling conventions and constraints. Born in Hungary to Palestinian parents and now based in Jaffa, Hamound is no stranger to the cost and opportunity of living "in between”: she was the only Palestinian girl at her film school in Tel Aviv. However, her film is "not just about Palestinian or Arab women. I know for sure all the situations and dilemmas are happening all over the world. Because I am a Palestinian, I created from my point of view. When you just do your own thing in a very particular way, you can get the universal, too.” (MH in Vogue interview) Lightened by humour and tinged with darkness, In Between traces the protagonists’ energy and hopes, conflicts and frustrations, while the soundtrack of Arab-influenced techno and pop music adds aural expression to the theme of intercultural tensions. It’s hard not to wish that instead of a single feature film, Ms. Hamoud had made a television season about Laila, Salma and Nur, so that the audience’s curiosity about them could have been fully satisfied and just so we could hang out with them more regularly.

Through the View Finder: Israeli Cinema and TV Dr. Miryam Sivan Course Number: 702.2690 Office Hours: TBA Semester: TBA Location: 236, Student Building Class Time: TBA Phone: 04-824-2065 Class Location: TBA E-Mail: [email protected] Course Description: From mid-19th century daguerreotypes taken by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, to the first film taken by the brother Lumiere, from films sponsored by the Jewish Agency showing the early Eastern European Jewish pioneers, to the current explosion of Israeli cinema and television, dubbed the Golden Age of Israeli Television, by producers, stations, and film platforms around the world, in this class we will explore Israel in all its complexity through the camera view finder. Though the first feature films were only shot in the 1930s, and then just a few, since 1960 over 200 have been shot. Some, like Exodus, were Hollywood-based and established the sabra super- man image in the world's eye. But most were and are local productions filmed for a fraction of an American or European budget. A respectable number of Israeli films have been shortlisted in the Academic Award’s Foreign Film category, but up until recently, most of Israel’s films have been heard of or seen outside of the country though they represent a unique picture of a nation and a land in transition. We will watch movies and tv episodes (at home) and read critical articles on the development of Israel cinema to allow a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of Israel's complex history of identity, place, community, and landscape -- and its continual metamorphosis through time.
