The work focused on excavations for the fulcrum mechanism of a new swing bridge, as well as the cutting back of the river bank to house the bridge in the closed position. The fulcrum was situated at the southern end of the former island in the River Derwent, formerly housing the doubling shop of John Lombe’s silk mill from the 1720s onwards. The raised southern end of the island proved to have been much disturbed during construction of the early 20th century power station on the site, with deep tanks associated with water intake and outflow to the River Derwent. Footings of the extreme southern end of the doubling shop were identified in Archaeological Investigations Project 2008 Post-determination/Research the baulk of the edge of excavation just to the south of this zone of disturbance. Further to the north, beyond the zone of deep tanking, a further portion of the doubling shop survived, preserved just above ground level across its entire width. The brick wall footings of the building proved to have been laid on wooden sleeper foundations, with wooden piles beneath driven into the river silts. A section of internal brick floor also survived. The northern end of the building had, however, been totally destroyed during the 20th century building and landscaping. Human remains [minimum of two individuals] recovered on the site following completion of the watching brief were probably derived from a nearby burial ground. The burial ground may have been associated with the former almshouses fronting Full Street, or with All Saints’ [now Derby Cathedral] and St. Michael’s Parish Churches located in the vicinity of the site. The remains were most likely disturbed during the insertion of an iron pipe thought to relate to the construction of an extension to the electricity power station in the early 1900s. Archaeological Evaluation and Watching Brief 2006-8 Edgeworth, M,Cuttler, R, Bishop, E, Ratkal, R,Tetlow, E & Geary, G Edgbaston : Birmingham Archaeology, 2008, 38pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Birmingham Archaeology In 2006 an archaeological evaluation by means of topographic survey, trial trenching and environmental sampling was carried out at Hall Lane, Staveley. The site was located between the east bank of the River Rother and the former Chesterfield Canal and contained at least two ponds with associated earthworks. A total of six trial trenches were excavated and an environmental auger survey was carried out. One cut archaeological feature, in the form of a small gully, was revealed and no finds were recovered. However, profiles of alluvial deposits were obtained which were more extensive than initially envisaged, perhaps indicating the presence of a large palaeochannel. Alluvial deposits recorded in one trench designed to investigate a possible third pond, to the south, probably represented the fill of the former palaeochannel rather than a pond. The other two ponds appeared to be located within the course of this earlier undated palaeochannel and were shown to be earlier in date than the construction of the canal embankment in the 1770s, but their precise date and function remained uncertain. It was not certain that the ponds were used for rearing fish, although this remained a strong possibility. Other possible functions suggested use as retting ponds for processing hemp or flax, but this appeared to have been ruled out by the results of environmental analysis which found little direct evidence of human activity and suggested there had been a complex floodplain evolution at the site. During 2007 an archaeological watching brief monitored the contractors groundworks at the northern part of the site in the area of two of the ponds. Due to the waterlogged conditions it was too hazardous to fully excavate the area. No archaeological finds were recovered from any of the deposits. A stone culvert, probably associated with the canal, was discovered running into one of the ponds. In 2008 a further watching brief was carried out at the north-eastern part of the site to record the former Chesterfield Canal and any associated remains. The course of the canal was recorded and a section was excavated.
