The assessment identified that although the site has no known archaeology, medieval archaeology has been identified in the vicinity and the site was located within the bounds of the medieval town. The assessment identified prehistoric to post-medieval archaeology within the immediate vicinity of the site. The site was identified as having potential for early medieval to medieval archaeology and a 1757 map shows the site containing tenant farm buildings. Areas of the proposed scheme were identified as having moderate to high potential for Roman remains associated with Car Dyke. Three sections of Car Dyke within the scheme were also identified as Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Bronze Age to modern archaeology was identified within the vicinity of the site by the assessment. The assessment also identified 'The Fosse Way', as running through the site. Medieval field systems and post-medieval structural remains have also been recorded within the development area. The assessment identified that the groundworks for the pipeline would impact upon archaeology. The pipeline follows part of the route of the Roman Road 'Ermine Street'. The pipeline would also go through the Roman settlement of Ancaster and although the pipeline would follow the route of an earlier pipeline, access pits would impact archaeology. The site was situated between the 13th century church and market place and may have been the location of the village green. 2 Archaeological Investigations Project 2002 Desk-Based Assessments East Midlands Region Cartographic sources show the site as containing a row of houses/shops in the 18th century. The site was identified as having potential for prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and medieval archaeological remains. The assessment identified that the road would pass through and adjacent to archaeology, identified by the Sites and Monuments Record. Archaeology of all periods would be affected and the setting of Grade II Listed building would be impacted on. The assessment identified that the scheme may impact upon Late Neolithic features and Early Bronze Age features. A prehistoric causeway and part of Kirkland abbey would also be impacted on by the scheme. Further sites of all periods would also impacted upon by the proposed scheme. The assessment identified that the site lay outside the medieval settlement. Roman archaeology was identified in the vicinity of the site and the assessment concluded that the potential for Roman archaeology on the site as moderate. The assessment identified that at the village of Heapham the pipeline route would pass through an SAM comprising of a medieval moated site. Ridge and furrow was also identified along the route of the pipeline in this area. Isolated Neolithic axes and worked flint were identified as being recovered close to the route and a potential for prehistoric remains was identified for the route. Roman and Saxon occupation was identified close to the route at Springthorpe and Saxon, medieval and later agricultural activity was identified across most of the route. Part of the pipeline was also identified as being located within a medieval deer park. (Western Section) Albone, J Sleaford : Archaeological Project Services, 2002, 25pp, colour pls, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Project Services A supplementary assessment was carried out on the proposed pipeline route. Assessment identified that the western section of the pipeline crossed a medieval deer park and the pipeline would have a potential impact on any associated features. The western end of the pipeline was also identified as falling within the wider battle field area of the 1643 Civil War Battle of Gainsborough. A post-medieval sandpit and 19th century brickworks were also identified along the route.
