The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998). -

“JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sabia McCoy-Torres August 2015 © 2015 Sabia McCoy-Torres “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE Sabia McCoy-Torres, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This ethnography explores the symbiotic relationship between the West Indian Diaspora and performance based, Jamaican originated, reggae culture. The field site was Brooklyn, New York. I analyze the intersections of reggae with racial and cultural identity construction, expressions of gender and sexuality, transnationalism, and place making practices. The formation of a local, West Indian led, reggae related economy is also a subject of focus. In order to theorize the impact West Indians have on Brooklyn and their subjectivities, I develop the concepts transgeographies and figurative citizenship. I argue that the West Indian Diaspora creates transgeographic cultural places that specific sociocultural practices and performance help to form. I offer that performance, action, and material alteration coalesce to physically transform space and imbue it with affect and sensory elements that together constitute links to the various nations of the Caribbean. The West Indian geographies of Brooklyn are thereby brought inside the Caribbean space expanding how geography is conceived of as an analytic. Emergent diasporic subjectivities are formed within these transgeographic cultural places, one of them being what I term figurative citizenship. Karen Flynn: Moving Dancehall Off the Island: Female Sexuality and Club Culture in Toronto Moving Dancehall Off the Island: Female Sexuality and Club Culture in Toronto Karen Flynn Associate Professor University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA Abstract While there has been an exciting growth in scholarship on dancehall culture, primarily in the fields of cultural and literary studies as they relate to Jamaica, more attention needs to be given to its configuration in other geographical locations and other popular culture arenas. This article explores dancehall culture from a geographic site, in Toronto, which, despite its large Caribbean population, is often a mere footnote in larger diasporic studies. Moving beyond the proclivity of viewing dancehall culture and music from a purely patriarchal misogynistic viewpoint, the article focuses on the redemptive and empowering possibilities that this popular Black expressive form holds. It underscores how dancehall culture and music challenge hegemonic scripts predicated on stereotypes of Black women’s sexuality. Despite the contradictions inherent in the music and the performance of female artists such as Lady Saw and Tanya Stephens, dancehall culture evokes women as active agents who are able to articulate their sexual desires. A Dub Approach to Defining a Caribbean Literary Identity in the Contemporary Diaspora
ABSTRACT Title of Document: ON THE B-SIDE: A DUB APPROACH TO DEFINING A CARIBBEAN LITERARY IDENTITY IN THE CONTEMPORARY DIASPORA Isis N. Semaj, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed by: Professor Merle Collins, Department of English Drawing from Jamaica’s socio-politically distinct dub musical genre, “On the B: Side” argues that the literary aesthetics of Caribbean migration and history can be analyzed according to a model of dub. As I define it, the dub aesthetic is marked by erasures, repairs, re-invention, and re-creation. It is thematically and formally captured in migration and represented in the experience of dislocation and home(lessness), memory and the layering of time, political silences and cultural amplification, and the distinct social climate associated with the 21st century push toward celebrating diasporic communities and marking progress through globalization. Given these contemporary circumstances, the Caribbean subject at home locally and at home in the diaspora necessarily demonstrates an acute investment in memory recall and a strong motivation toward building cultural posterity. This dissertation, therefore, explicates how the more recent literature reaches back in new ways that facilitate the survival of a uniquely Caribbean literary identity into the future. This dissertation analyzes works by Ramabai Espinet, Edwidge Danticat, and Anthony Winkler to highlight the ways in which relocation and dislocation intersect for the Caribbean subject. Additionally, I examine works by Marion Patrick Jones and Diana McCaulay, who represent another category of unbelonging and homelessness in the Caribbean that is read in the middle class’s exclusion from national and regional discourse on authenticity. Interrogating the space of Caribbean fiction, the dissertation moves through the deconstruction and reinvention of migration to arrive at the diasporic intersections of erasure, rupture, and repair. -

Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar approaches in hip hop, reggaeton, drum’n’bass and bhangra, reggae’s aesthetic system has found adherents among artists and audiences outside of Jamaica. This paper maps out, through historical description, ethnographic data, and musical analysis, the Jamaican system as a unique and increasingly influential approach to music-making in the digital age. The advent of commercial, mass-mediated popular music genres in the twentieth century has contributed to the spread, in many music cultures worldwide, of a certain conventional ‘mainstream’ form of song, comprising an original, autonomous and reproducible entity with a relatively unique integration of lyrics, melody and chordal accompaniment. In mainstream Western music culture, the thirty-two-bar AABA structure, perhaps repeated twice or thrice with some sort of variation, constituted a quintessential type of this conventional song form. -

Dancehall History Script
Lucía Hugener Carroquino I am a student who is going to produce a section of the show of The 8th Note, which is a programme about contemporary music, focusing each programme on one music genre. The show is broadcasted on Sundays at 12:15 am, lasting for 45 minutes. The show is structured in many different sections such as an historical overview of the music genre, interviews, latest news along with debates, music recommendations, and games. I decided to produce the historical overview section because I think it is a very representative part of the programme, since it allows to know in depth a music genre and listen to many different artists. This section is a feature that should be 10 minutes long, but I have made a short representative piece of 4 minutes of how it should sound like. FADE OUT “Dancehall beat” “Audio 1 Documentary” FADE IN “Dancehall beat” Dancehall is named after the Jamaican dance halls were music was played by local sound systems. It started in the ghettos in Kingston in the late 1940s, among people that didn’t have the means to participate in dances uptown. Sound systems were a way of having a community radio. People would set up a system with a record player and speakers and put different recordings. Anyone could go to listen to the music for free. Originally, most of the (the records came from America). -
