Remaining consistent hitmakers, the duo has left an indelible mark and are indeed two exceptional artistes who have decided to unify their voices in their message-filled songs geared towards past, present and future generations…and they have been able to successfully bridge the generation gap, as they embark on their mission to spread reggae’s powerful message. But how did fate bring the DJ and singer together? Simple. A love for each other’s masterful work. In 2002, Suga Roy, then a talented DJ and producer, was so impressed with Conrad Crystal’s 1986 release, ‘True Love’, that he sought out the singer and requested that both of them record a remake of the hit single. The remake was a success and both found that they had a natural chemistry. More combinations followed: a cover of the Pat Kelly original ‘Talk About Love’, followed by a cover of Gregory Isaacs’ ‘Love Overdue’. Their successful recordings continued, yielding the originals ‘Man Can’t Walk In Peace’ on the Yellow Moon label, ‘Mek Dem A Gwaan Suh’ on Stone Love’s Real Rock rhythm, ‘Tired A It’ and ‘Education Wise’. All powerful, thought-provoking tracks that enjoyed success on the local and international charts, as well as getting heavy rotation in the dancehalls and on the airwaves. ‘Education Wise’, an anthem in schools, held the number one spot on the Mega Jamz chart for three weeks, ‘Love Overdue’ peaked at number four on the RJR chart and both tunes rode Richie B’s Hot Mix chart.

The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.

The field site was Brooklyn, New York. I analyze the intersections of reggae with racial and cultural identity construction, expressions of gender and sexuality, transnationalism, and place making practices. The formation of a local, West Indian led, reggae related economy is also a subject of focus. In order to theorize the impact West Indians have on Brooklyn and their subjectivities, I develop the concepts transgeographies and figurative citizenship. I argue that the West Indian Diaspora creates transgeographic cultural places that specific sociocultural practices and performance help to form. I offer that performance, action, and material alteration coalesce to physically transform space and imbue it with affect and sensory elements that together constitute links to the various nations of the Caribbean. The West Indian geographies of Brooklyn are thereby brought inside the Caribbean space expanding how geography is conceived of as an analytic. Emergent diasporic subjectivities are formed within these transgeographic cultural places, one of them being what I term figurative citizenship.
