The ladies and men outdid themselves with the decorating of the Spring Hats. They were so colourful and creative as well. Everyone got to model their hats & we had three judges, judging them. 1st, 2nd & 3rd places they were all presented with lovely prizes. Check out the photos in the Newsletter. Then we had 4 ladies doing Celebrity Heads, wearing Witches hats lots of laughs trying to guess whose name was written on their hat. All three were presented with gifts for participation. We had the good old fashion Potato and Spoon race for the adults, I think the men were cheating. Once again 1st, 2nd & 3rd placing were presented with gifts. Then we also had the children's potato and spoon race, they loved it, and all received gifts. Every club member was given a bag of goodies when they arrived & they all loved it. I gave a talk to open the day about Lou Whiteman who owned all the land at Whiteman Park, and also owning the Brickyards in Middle Swan. I know the talk was very much appreciated as I had people come up to me thanking me for the talk and that they just love to hear about history. We had the tables set up with the most delicious home-made cakes. A huge thank-you to the Federation committee members who bought these cakes in, there was more than enough. We had the urn going all day for tea/coffee. Plenty of cold bottled water for everyone. All in all, it was a fantastic social day. I would like to thank the following clubs for supporting the Federation for hosting this our very first Picnic it was just a lovely day: Ellenbrook, Forrestfield, Swan Bassendean, Bentley, Cannington, Greenwood, East Maddington & Maylands. We are now heading into the festive season & this is where we have to be very careful with what we eat & drink. What with all the parties, restaurants etc. We need to try and stay on track during this time of the year. Try not to undo what you have achieved through-out the year. Plan your menu each day, especially if you know you are going out for breakfast, lunch or dinner. EAT LESS, before you go out and when you come back home. EXERCISE, even if it means go to the shopping centres and walk around for 30 minutes. Most important ensure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. It's always nice to have a talk to the Regional Clubs and it was so nice having a chat to York, they tell me they have been around for 40 years and still going strong. I have been invited to Hammersley/Warwick Weight Watchers club on November 25th. Pauline will be attending with me and we look forward to meeting all the club members. OFFICE CLOSURE From: Friday 13th December 2019 Re-open: Monday 13th January 2020. Welcome to the Karkana Klub news update. Firstly, my name is Debra Pollock and I have been elected as the President. I was the President two years ago for a few years. Our group has had a bit of a face lift (or shirt lift). We decided to get a club top to wear every week and at events. You will see from the photos attached that we look quite smart. Our numbers have reduced a bit this year. This has been to people moving, illness and sadly members passing away. We are getting ready for Christmas, organising a dinner plus our end of year function which will incorporate our crowning night, secret Santa and our Christmas supper. We have got our Christmas tree competition going at the moment, will end on November 28. We have a felt tree and everyone has a bauble with their name on it. You start on the tree and if you put on weight you have to be put in the box under the tree with an angel. If you lose weight you can go back on the tree and if the following week you lose again you will lose your angel. Unfortunately, we have quite a few baubles in the box. It is quite hard as it goes for 12 weeks. Our last crowning night saw Sandra Trafford as our Queen, she lost 3.550 in the 12 weeks. We are only going to have one week off over the Christmas period as its too hard to get back on track. We are looking at doing a challenge with another group to get the motivation up and going. We get the Healthy Food Guide magazine each month and I read from it, getting new ideas and checking out new recipes. I have attached some photos of our group with our new shirts. We have got the weight in girls, Jodie, Lisa and Jan. Then we have Jane and Norma, they are our longest serving members, they do the lotto and money board each week. They have been with the Federation over 40 years each. And then our group. Not all members have the shirts, it’s not compulsory. Well that’s all for now. Wishing the committee and all the groups a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Debra

MAYLANDS WEIGHT LOSS SUPPORT GROUP

What a glorious day it was today for our Picnic in the Park, the weather was absolutely perfect. Several of our ladies came along with their families, who all agreed it was a fantastic outing. Most brought their decorated hats, including Louise’s husband Tony who had a “Possum” lurking around the brim. It was so nice to see a man getting into the spirit of things even though he was ineligible to enter as he wasn’t a Member. There were 16 ladies who paraded their decorated hats, and I was very happy that our club was well represented. Louise Lynch won 1st place with her Bee buzzing around her flowers, while my Fairy Garden hat came in 2nd and Julie Clark from Ellenbrook placing 3rd wearing her absolutely beautiful arrangement of pink and white flowers on a white hat with the brim turned up. Well done to everyone for your creations, you all deserved to win. In addition to the hats, there was a game of Celebrity Hats and again Maylands came out a winner with Louise correctly guessing that her Celebrity, was Donald Trump. Another game was organized to the delight of everyone in attendance, a Potato and Spoon race, Maylands scored the trifecta in this, with Debbie Cadee 1st, my daughter Denise Hollins 2nd and Toni Pooley 3rd, well done to you all. The little ones in attendance weren’t left out they had a little (plastic) egg and spoon race with Darcie the winner, Xavier 2nd and little Sebastian in 3rd place. In closing I would personally like to thank Shirley, Sheila, Jenni and all the Weight Watchers Federation Committee for organizing such a wonderful, fun filled day and the gifts given to all Members on our arrival and the prizes for the Hat Parade and games. For those Members who couldn’t make it this year, you missed a fabulous day. Cynthia Baxter President Maylands WLSG

SORRENTO WEIGHT WATCHERS CLUB. We are continuing our good Weight Loss; our competitions have been very successful & our Graduates are doing well. Our new “Princess Dee” was crowned recently and wears the Tiara well, while doing all the recording & setting up for our meetings for many years. Willy won our big 8-week competition and as a Graduate is keeping to her Goal Weight. We are having our Christmas break-up luncheon at the Joondalup Resort on the 25th November. We finish the year on December 6th. We wish everyone a Very Happy & Safe Christmas. With thanks to everyone at the office for producing the magazine & all the work they do. Club Secretary. Dely

ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS Another year almost over and Christmas is upon us, the first thing we think of is how much weight we will gain over the festive season, if we are all followers of the "Simply too Good to be True" cookbooks we would know how to be food aware during the silly season. Our club is doing well taking off 18.5 kilos combined over the past two weeks, we have 20 members weighing in at most meetings and have one new member welcome to Jan Cullen. Jan has already been an asset to our club as she has been made Queen of the Month for September taking off two kg. Followed by Jenny Gower with 1.5 kg off. We also had a spring luncheon where all our members wore spring hats and a luncheon made the day as members made food from Annette Symes's books. Also, our Melbourne Cup lunch was a great success, Marlene our President drew up a quiz on horse racing and which we failed miserably due to lack of knowledge. Have a safe an enjoyable Christmas from all of us in Esperance.

T’was the day before Christmas and all through the house Nothing would fit me not even a blouse The traditional lunch I'd prepared The gravies and sauce the beef nicely rare The Wine and Rum balls the festive cheer It was our greatest weight loss fear So got rid of the fruit cake the crackers and dip Can't have any of those going on our hips. Weight Watchers to guide me and show me no fear Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year. Written by Jan Cullen Did I Eat That With kind Regards Jeanette Edwards Vice-Secretary

HAMERSLEY/WARWICK INVITATION. A big thank-you to Hamersley/Warwick for inviting myself, our Vice President/News Editor Pauline Green and Committee Member John Sardelich, to their club meeting on Monday 25th Nov. It was really lovely to meet all the club members & give a talk. I wish them every success for 2020. FEDERATION STATE PRESIDENT. SHIRLEY SARDELICH.

SUNSHINE SLIMMERS GERALDTON Hello once again from our Weight Watchers members from a very windy day in Geraldton. (what’s new) We should not complain when our eastern counterparts are trying to cope with those devastating bushfires. Our thoughts are with them all. I don’t think we would have any idea of what those poor people are going through unless we were in that situation ourselves. Onto a much lighter note. Our Princess of the month was: Freida Moses with a loss of .6 Our Runner up of the month was: Betty Pass with a loss of .5 Congratulations to these ladies. One of our lovely, long standing members in Millie Pass celebrated her 85th birthday recently. She told us she had a wonderful day with her precious family, which for memory started early morning and went late into the night. How wonderful. We have another new member this month in Anna Howie who used to go to Ellenbrook Club. Welcome on-board Anna and I hope you enjoy our club and company as much as we enjoy having you. Our Christmas function is on Thursday the 5th December. We are having it catered for in our club rooms which we also did last year, which everyone seemed to enjoy. As this will be the final newsletter for this year, on behalf of Sunshine Slimmers I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE Regards Pat Underwood

BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS Belmont WW meets at the Belmont RSL hall which is located near Ascot racecourse. There are many stables in the area and it’s not unusual to see horses returning from early morning gallops on the track. I sometimes wonder if any of them will go on to win the Melbourne Cup, especially as an Aussie horse won for the first time in ten years. We had our usual TAB with sweeps organised by Maureen, who did a brilliant job despite not feeling well. Our last meeting in October was close to Halloween so we celebrated with morning tea and fancy dress. Members really got into the spirit and the hall was filled with clowns, wicked witches, a good witch and even a cow. We continue to do well weight-wise, with the club showing a net loss most weeks (one week it was only 50 grams, but a loss is a loss, right?). Val received a 4-week ribbon and was Queen of the month for October. She just added a 4-week daisy as did Shirley. Jean C and Maggie again tied for Grad of the month. Our last regular meeting is 3 December for Christmas lunch. On 10 December we’re going on a long-awaited trip to the Dwellingup Cherry Farm – we had to book a year in advance. That’s all for this year, see you in 2020! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Make the season bright with joy, peace, love, and hope.

MOORE RIVER WEIGHT WATCHERS We have had a relative quite month with our competition, the pear tree, coming to an end this week, with 3 members still hanging on. Whoever loses the most in 1-week receives a $2 scratchy and tells us what they have been doing. Last week the member who lost the most said, " coming to WW's with all the encouragement she receives from members helps her so much". As l have said before, we don't have a magic wand, but we do help each other. It is that first step, walking in the door, and deciding to become healthier as it is not just about losing weight. As the photo shows, our wonderful volunteer ambo's, Mel & Colin, came to our club last week and gave us a demonstration on how to deal with snake bites. Each time l sees this demonstration l learn a bit more. WW's will be breaking up for Christmas on December 4th and after our meeting we are going to Benara nursery. We start back Jan 8th so if there is anyone whose New Year's resolution is to become healthier please give me a call 0413 818 955. l guess most of us are complaining about the very hot weather...but we are lucky if this is our only complaint. Seeing all the tragedies around our country with the fires and storms we can only pray for the people who have lost homes and possessions and for the firefighters and all other services who are still out there. Wishing you all a safe and Happy Christmas from Moore River Weight Watchers. “Believe you can and you're halfway there”- Theodore Roosevelt Jae Watson MRWW Vice President

He looked like an Emu that couldn’t breathe very funny he had us in stitches of laughter. We are now looking forward to our end of year Christmas party & break up. We wish you all well & stay healthy and safe. Jenny & Cannington Weight Watchers club.

BUSSELTON WASPS Hello to everyone, Well our ladies did it again... no one gained any weight last week. Gives such a feeling of satisfaction doesn't it ,well it does to others , that is until an unidentified voice is heard to say..." that's because the secretary wasn't here " Guess I'll always be wondering..... This will be our last newsletter for the year as Christmas rapidly approaches. Our city is already beginning to swell with bus and carloads of school leavers. Such a lot of programs and activities have been arranged for this lucky privileged lot. Wonder how they would react being told to finish school Friday at 4.30 and ride your bike to work on Monday at 7.30am. Not with a " high five " I bet. We hope they all enjoy their time here however and make many memories. So many recipes I have for Christmas; Manu would have a fit. But what to choose. So exotic and tropical and colourful, on paper Just can't make up my mind. Better play it safe and stick to old favourites though, so outcome the CWA and Golden Wattle, again After all everyone has a stomach like an ironing board. It's just that some of us have bigger piles of ironing than others ! Here's a Christmas Carol for us all in the "Summer Wonderland.."...... sung by & found on the internet ......

Sleigh bells ring, icebox glistening The beautiful sight of barbies alight Strolling through a Summer Wonderland

Pour the sav ,in the sunshine Serve the pav at lunchtime Bubbles for Nan pineapple on ham Strolling through a Summer Wonderland

In the arvo we can grab the wickets A plastic cricket bat your brother found, Backyard full of all your distant replies So we pass the can of mozzie spray around

Later on the sun is falling and your drunk uncles snoring We'll hear the birds in the trees Feel the warm breeze Strolling through a Summer Wonderland

Way down here Christmas landmarks Summer flowers Funny tan marks. We're happy and bright not a snowman in sight Strolling through a Summer Wonderland, Strolling through a Summer Wonderland...

Christmas greetings to everyone. Thank you to all the wonderful workers in our head office and the committee and the very best of Christmas greetings With heaps of jingle bells With kind regards Valerie

GREENWOOD WEIGHT WATCHERS Hello everyone Our club has banded together, led by Vice President Jeanette Fraser, to help a campaign called ‘It’s in the Bag’. This campaign is for a charity called ‘Share the Dignity’ and its aim is to give vulnerable women and girls a reason to smile and feel cared for over the festive season…. as well as restoring some dignity by providing them with a handbag filled with essential hygiene products and a few treats. Our club members donated 20 near-new handbags and bought and gathered items such as shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soaps, body wash, tissues, deodorants and sanitary items to help fill these handbags. Little goodies such as hand cream, hand sanitiser, notebooks, pens and towels have also been added. Share the Dignity is an Australian charity that partners with local shelters and charitable organisations who support the homeless, at-risk and women experiencing domestic violence. The filled handbags were dropped off to a local Bunnings store by several members of our club. Bunnings stores and Trade Centres are the collection points for this campaign and donations of handbags can be made up until Saturday 7th December. For more information on this worthwhile cause, go online and type in either “It’s in the bag’ or ‘Share the Dignity’. Our club would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy time over Christmas and may we all come back in the New Year freshly motivated to carry on with our healthy-weight challenges. Best wishes Michelle Bowra President – Greenwood Weight Watchers

Tropical Christmas Cake SERVES: 16 | Book 2 | Difficulty ★★☆☆☆

3 cups (500g) mixed dried fruit ½ cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground mixed spice ½ cup brandy or rum 1 x 440g crushed pineapple (in natural juice) ¾ teaspoon bicarb soda 3 egg whites 1 tablespoon Parisian essence (gravy browner) (optional) 2 cups self-raising flour cooking spray ¼ cup (30g) whole blanched almonds (optional)

Preheat oven 180°C fan forced.

1: Place mixed fruit, sugar, spice, brandy and whole can of pineapple into a saucepan, boil for 3 minutes. Stir in bicarb, leave to cool. 2: Once fruit mixture has cooled beat in egg whites. If you prefer a darker cake add in Parisian essence to fruit mix. 3: Gently fold sifted flour into mixture in one go, treat as a sponge. DO NOT BEAT as this will make the cake tough. The less the mixture is moved, the lighter the cake will be. 4: Pour mixture into a 19cm square or round cake tin that has been generously coated with cooking spray. Decorate top of cake with almonds (optional) 5: Bake 55-60 minutes. Leave to rest for a few minutes then turn onto a wire rack to cool. Variation: For a lower fat count omit almonds = 0.5g fat per slice.

MY GUIDE TO HEALTHY CHRISTMAS FEASTING Column by Annette Sym

Navigating a traditional Christmas spread can be a nightmare for a slimmer. What are the best options? How much should I have? Much of the traditional Christmas fare is laden with fat so let’s look at the fat count of an average day’s food on Christmas Day: If you have a baked dinner, Christmas pudding with cream, 5 scorched almonds, a handful of peanuts, cashews and chocolate coated nuts and one piece of Chrissy cake your fat count could be anything up to 125g of fat for the day. Yes, it really does add up. The recommended total daily fat intake for someone wanting to lose up to 15 kilos is around 30g for a female and 40g for a male. One of the biggest problems on Christmas Day is the nibblies. With platters of lollies and nuts all around, it's easy to snack without thinking. Grabbing a handful every time you walk by can wreak havoc with the waistline.

There are healthier options, here are my suggestions: HEALTHY CHRISTMAS NIBBLIES TOTAL FAT PER SERVE PRETZELS - handful under 1.0g POPCORN - dry microwaved under 1.0g SALSA WITH CRUDITÉS AND RICE CRACKERS under 1.0g LOW FAT DIPS Book 4 - 1 serve approx 0.5g FRUIT PLATTER filled with seasonal fruits under 1.0g SYMPLY TOO GOOD MINCE PIE Book 2 - 1 pie 2.0g SYMPLE SWEET CREAM Book 3 - 1 serve 0.6g MARSHMALLOW & FRUIT BUBBLE BAR 1.1g Book 4 - 1 serve A few final tips for Christmas feasting A healthy attitude will go a long way on Christmas Day. To avoid a blow out on the day, choose mostly low fat nibblies and have just a few of the high fat choices. Have enough to satisfy you but don’t overdo it and don’t sit near all that tempting food. Drink lots of water as this will keep you hydrated and make you less inclined to nibble for the sake of it. There's no need to deprive yourself, you can still be healthy and enjoy the Christmas fare. If you make the right choices and don’t overdo it Christmas can be an enjoyable time for slimmers.
