  • Lonavala Sightseeing Guide Numbered Amongst the Many Local
Lonavala Sightseeing Guide by newsdesk Numbered amongst the many local attractions are forts, caves and lakes. The rock escarpments in the hills provided vantage positions for fortresses and fortifications of the powerful Maratha kingdom established by Shivaji. The imposing Rajmachi Fort can be approached only on foot as it sits surrounded by deep valleys on three sides and a thick forest on the fourth. Other equally impressive forts are the Manoranjan Fort, Shrivardhan fort, Visapur Fort, Lohagad Fort and the Tunga Fort with arsenals and guardhouses. The three ancient caves found in this region date back to the early years of the first millennium. Karla Caves: were made in or around 160 BC and are the biggest ‘Chaitya Caves’ (prayer halls) here. The caves with viharas (monasteries) were excavated for the Buddhist monks who came here during the monsoons. The caves interiors have lion pillars, huge elephant forms, carved representations of Gautam Buddha and dancing couples. The entrance gate is in the shape of a "Peepul" leaf through which one enters the huge Chaitya griha or hall. This large hall is full of smooth stone pillars, which are carved with elephant and human forms. The roof is high and semicircular. The Bhaja Caves are similar to Karla Caves albeit on a smaller scale. These Buddhist caves also follow the Chaitya style. The speciality of these caves is that the rays of the setting sun gilds the dark interiors where one can see carved figures of gods and goddesses. The Bedsa Caves are close to the Mumbai Pune Road near Kamshet between the towns of Kadde and Bedsa.

  • Sustainable Tourism Development in Konkan: a Need of Time
Electronic International Interdisipinary Research Journal (EIIRJ) {Bi-Monthly}, 2012 May/June ISSN 2277 -2456 , Volume -I, Issue -III. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN KONKAN: A NEED OF TIME Dr. Sardar Patil Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Athalye, Sapre and Pitre College, Devrukh, Tal. Sangmeshwar, Dist. Ratnagiri (Maharashtra, India) Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION: Tourism is one of the largest global industries with much of the growing market focused around pristine natural as well as cultural environments. It includes coastal and marine areas, forts, forests, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, etc. Tourism plays an important and vital role in the economic development of the developing country, like India (Tourism, Planning Commision of India). It creates opportunities for employment in the service industries associated with it and include transportation (Airlines , Cruise ships and Taxicabs ), hospitality (Accommodations including hotels and resorts ) and entertainment venues (Amusement parks , casinos , shopping malls , music venues and theatres ) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_ship ). Tourism can benefit local communities and Government through revenue generation and employment. However, tourism can also threaten the resources by destroying habitat, disturbing wildlife, affecting water quality, and threaten communities by over-development, crowding, and disruption of local culture. In addition, conventional tourism often does not benefit the local community when tourist revenue “leaks” to outside operators (World Tourism Organization). As a result, tourism can destroy the very resources on which it depends. In contrast, sustainable tourism is consciously planned to benefit local residents, respect local culture, conserve natural resources, direct more of the profits to the local community and Government, and educate both tourists and local residents about the importance of conservation.

VARTAK & VINAYA GHATE I\ Department of Botany, Maharashlra Association for the Cultivation of Science-Research f11stitult', Pune 41 I 004, India. ABSTRACT This is an attempt to delimit tho variou' spocio1 of tho genus Arthraxv11 P. Beauv. Morpho loaY of lower aJumo of senile spikelet appaars to provide a reliable taxonomic character for the delimitation of various 1poclos. Tho sizo, ornamentation, position of vein•, apex and margins of &Iume have boon proved to bo tbo most U\oful characters in the identification of various taxa. An artificial key b~od exclusively on the glumo characters for the identification of I 7 species of genus Arthraxon P. Beauv. occurring in Western Mahara~htra has been given. INTRODUCTION Genus Arthraxon P. Beauv. is a noteworthy taxon in ·the family Poaceae on account of its geographical distribution and variability in habitat situations. From amongst the 25 s.peeies of this genus reported from the Indian subcontinent, about 65% are indi genous to hilly reglons of Mahara<Jhtra. Out of the~e 10 are endemic to Maharashtra. Though most of the species of Arthraxon P. Beauv. have poor food value, their occurrence in different environs ha<J. made them notable in the study of ecological succe s~ions and their identification has become imperative. Some of the workers who have referred to Arthraxon P. Beauv. from the area under consideration are Hooker (1896; six species), Cooke (1901 - J908; six species), Blatter and· McCann ( 1935; six species), Bor (1960; nine species) and Jain (1972; thirteen species).

4 5 3 JOURNAL OF ECOLOGICAL 2 SOCIETY Vol.s 19-20, 2006-07 Editor : Prakash Gole 1 Conservation of Biodiversity of the West Coast between Mumbai and Goa Prakash Gole Journal of Ecological Society Vol.s 19 and 20, 2006-2007 Published by : Prakash Gole, Director, Ecological Society, 1/B Abhimanshree Society, Pune 411008 Printed at : Aksharchhaya, 2035 Sadashiv Peth, Tilak Road, Pune 411030 For private circulation only Foreword The present double issue of our Journal presents a novel attempt to link biodiversity to regional planning. In 1995 WWF-India asked this editor to conduct an investigation to identify biodiversity hotspots on the sea coast between Mumbai and Goa, known in Maharashtra as the Konkan coast. The contents of this issue of our Journal are compiled from the report I submitted to WWF-India in 1997 after completing the investigation. The biodiversity hotspots that emerged after an examination of the intertidal zone of this stretch of the coast, not only took in to account the richness of species of flora and fauna recorded on the coast, but also the factors that nourish and sustain that diversity. The 'Hot spots' as visualized here are not just focii of floral and faunal interest but cover a larger area encompassing a whole range of geophysical, chemical and ecological processes. As everyone knows the Mumbai - Goa stretch of our west coast is under intense pressure of industrial, agricultural and allied development. If the species richness and supporting life - sustaining processes are not protected, the country is likely to loose a treasure trove of present and future resources affecting the lives of thousands of humans and non-human beings.
