Annual Memorial Book The Dix Hills Jewish Center has prepared this Annual Memorial Booklet containing the text of the “Yizkor” Memorial Service and the names of those departed included by their loved ones. In addition, valuable thoughts and guidance for mourners in accordance with Jewish tradition and halacha are also found within this prayer booklet.

This booklet will be distributed to our worshippers for use during Yizkor Services for the High Holy Days as well as for the Memorial Services conducted at other times during the year.

The booklet is offered in the hope that you will find it both useful and meaningful, not only as an instrument of prayer but also as a vehicle through which we honor those who have departed in body but live on in our hearts and minds.

1 Yizkor MEMORIAL SERVICE

There is a time for everything, for all things under : a time to be born and a time to die, a time to laugh and a time to cry, a time to dance and a time to mourn, a time to seek and a time to lose, a time to forget and a time to remember. This day in sacred convocation we remember those who gave us life. We remember those who enriched our lives with love and beauty, kindness and compassion, thoughtfulness and understanding. We renew our bonds to those who have gone the way of all the earth. As we reflect upon those whose memory moves us this day, we seek consolation, and the strength and the insight born of faith. Tender as a parent with children, God is merciful with worshippers. God knows how we are fashioned, remembers that we are dust. Our days are as grass; we flourish as a flower in the field. The wind passes over it and it is gone, and no one can recognize where it grew. But God’s compassion for worshippers, God’s righteousness to children’s children, remain, age after age, unchanging. Three score and ten our years may number, four score years if granted the vigor. Continued

Laden with trouble and travail, life quickly passes, it flies always. What are mortals, eternal God, that You should be mindful of them? What are mortals, that You should take note of them, that You have made them little less than angels? The sounds of infants attest to Your power, the magnificence of life reflects Your glory. The heavens display Your splendor. What majesty is Yours throughout the world! Teach us to use all of our days, o God, that we may attain a heart of wisdom. Grant us of Your love in the morning, that we may joyously sing all our days.

When I stray from Your Holy Presence, my life is as death; but when I cleave to You, even in death I have life. You embrace the souls of the living and the dead. The earth inherits that which perishes. The dust returns to dust; but the soul, which is God’s, is immortal. God has compassion for all creatures. God has planted eternity within our soul, granting us a share in eternal unending life. The Almighty redeems our life from the grave. May we all be charitable in deed and in thought, in memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer. May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as we this day lovingly remember those whose lives endure as a blessing.

3 Our generations are bound to each other as children now remember their parents. Love is stronger than death as husbands and wives now remember each other, as parents now remember their children. Memory conquers death’s dominion as we now remember our brothers and sisters, grandparents, other relatives, partners in life and friends.

The deaths of those we now remember left gaping holes in our lives. But we are grateful for the gift of their lives. And we are strengthened by the blessings which they left us, by precious memories which comfort and sustain us we recall them this day.

A personal meditation

Eternal God, source of mercy, give me the gift of remembering. May my memories of the dead be tender and true, undiminished by time, not falsified by sentimentality. Let me recall them, and love them, as they were. Give me the gift of tears. Let me express my sense of loss, my sorrow, my pain, as well as my gratitude and my love. Give me the gift of hope. May I always believe in the beauty of life, the power of goodness, the right to joy. May I surrender my being, and the soul of the dead, To Your eternal compassion.

Each congregant reads silently the appropriate passages among those which follow. Personal meditations may also be added.

We also grieve each day for the far too many lives that have been taken during the pandemic. May their loved ones, their survivors, discover inner faith and resiliency in the midst of sorrow and sadness to find moments of comfort and solace. May we bond together with a common resolve to safely navigate through the darkness of this pandemic.

I place my spirit in God’s hand when I sleep and when I awake.

And with my spirit, my body too.

In Memory of Father

The memory of your life, dear father, rises before me at this solemn hour as I recall all the kindness, love and encouragement which you have shown me during your life. With untiring zeal you provided for my physical and spiritual needs. You rejoiced in my achievements, you guided me in my perplexities, and you strengthened me in my trials and disappointments. I accord you the tribute which you so richly deserve, by cherishing the ideals and principles you have taught me, by continuing the noble work you have left unfinished, by loyally upholding the heritage of Israel which you have transmitted unto me, and by serving my people and all who need me. Though you are gone from my physical view, the bond of love which unites us can never be severed. May the memories of your life inspire me to follow truth and righteousness. Amen.

In Memory of Mother

Though we are physically separated, dear mother, in this solemn hour, I call to mind the love and solicitude with which you tended and watched over my childhood, ever mindful of my welfare, and ever desirous for my happiness. Many were the sacrifices you made to ennoble my heart and instruct my mind. What I achieve is because of your influ- ence, and what I am, I have become through you. Though you are no longer physically present, the lessons that you imparted unto me shall ever remain with me.

If at times, I have failed in showing you the love and appreciation which you so worthily deserved, if I have been thoughtless and ungrateful, I ask to be forgiven. I pray that your spirit inspire me to noble and intelligent living, so that when my days on earth are ended, and I arrive at the Throne of Mercy, I shall be deemed worthy of you, and of reunion with you in God. Amen.

9 Meditations In Memory of a Husband or a Wife

With a sorrowing heart, O beloved..., I fondly recall your love and companionship, your tenderness and devotion, and the many com- forts and joys that you brought into my life. Though death has taken you from me, the bond which unites us cannot be broken.

O God, I pray that my grief at the departure of my beloved, engender within me sympathy and kindness, understanding and helpfulness towards all humanity. Grant that the memories of my dear one impel me to seek goodness and truth, so serve Israel and humanity. Be thou my comfort and strength. Amen.

In Memory of a Child I remember in this solemn hour, beloved child, the many joys you afforded me during your lifetime. I recall the days when I delighted in your physical and mental growth, and planned for your future. Though death has taken you from me, you are not forgotten. Your spirit is enshrined in my heart.

O Heavenly Source of Strength! Though few were the years wherein I rejoiced with my child, many were the blessings that (he/she) brought into my household. Teach me to live more nobly and to extend my love and devotion to other children in thankfulness for the privilege of having had and loved this child, though but for a few, brief years. Thus may (his/her) soul be bound up in the bond of life and (his/her) memory remain an inspiration to me. May the Almighty watch over you and safeguard your soul and may my love for you always gently embrace your eternal presence. Amen.

In Memory of a Brother, Sister or Other Relative Dear..., I recall the many hours we spent together in happy fellow- ship. I shall ever hold sacred the memory of your love and loyalty. Though death has summoned you from my side, your spirit is with me. May God grant that the recollection of your life stimulate me to noble thinking and righteous living. O God, I put my trust in Thee who are the source of all life and strength in sorrow. Amen.

10 In Memory of Congregants

We lovingly recall the members of our congregation and community who no longer dwell upon this earth. They have a special place in our hearts. We pray this day that all who have sustained the loss of loved ones be granted comfort and strength. Exalted, compassionate God, comfort the bereaved families of this congregation. Help all of us to perpetuate the worthy values in the lives of those no longer with us, whom we remember this day. May their memory endure as a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

In Memory of a Parent Who Was Hurtful Dear God, You know my heart. Indeed, You know me better than I know myself, so I turn to You before I rise for Kaddish. My emotions swirl as I say this prayer. The parent I remember was not kind to me. His/her death left me with a legacy of unhealed wounds, of anger and of dismay that a parent could hurt a child as I was hurt. I do not want to pretend to love, or to grief that I do not feel, but I do want to do what is right as a Jew and as a child. Help me, O God, to subdue my bitter emotions that do me no good, and to find that place in myself where happier memories may lie hidden, and where grief for all that could have been, all that should have been, may be calmed by forgiveness, or at least soothed by the passage of time. I pray that You, who raise up slaves to freedom, will liberate me from the oppression of my hurt and anger, and that You will lead me from this desert to Your holy place. Robert Saks Yizkor Reflections

May the memories of our loved ones inspire us To seek in our lives those qualities of mind and heart Which we recall with special gratitude. May we help to bring closer to fulfillment Their highest ideals and noblest strivings. May the memories of our loved ones deepen our loyalty To that which cannot die- Our faith, our love, and devotion to our heritage. As we ponder life’s transience and frailty, Help us, O God, to use each precious moment wisely, To fill each day with all the compassion and kindness Which You have placed within our reach. Thus will the memories of our loved ones abide among us As a source of undying inspiration and enduring blessing.

11 Memories Which Illumine Our Lives

There are stars whose light reaches the earth only after they themselves have disintegrated. And there are individuals whose memory lights the world after they have passed from it. These lights shine even in the darkest night and illumine our path ...

Hannah Senesh Beyond the Reach of Death

Our yesterdays are beyond the reach of death, When our love transforms them into living influences. Thus we continue to be guided by a light Which transcends time and defies death. Morris Adler

I believe I believe in the sun even when it is not shining. I believe in love when not feeling it. I believe in God when He is silent.

63 A Confessional Before Death

I am preparing myself for my departure from this life. Teach me not to fear. Help me, God, to make peace with my approaching death. Stay with me, God; don't leave me. I can't bear the thought of being separated from my loved ones. I will miss this world.

My shortcomings, my wrongdoings, my selfishness, my lies are all known to You. Forgive me, God, for being less than I could have been, for not always making the best use of the awesome potential You placed inside me.

Please watch over my loved ones, God. Ease their pain, be their comfort. Protect them from harm. Grace them with all that is good. Shelter them with gentleness and love, as I would. Answer their prayers. Grant them health and strength, blessings and joy.

May my life be a source of wisdom to my loved ones and to all those whose lives I have touched. May the love I gave remain with them always, may the lessons I have taught guide them to acts of goodness and honor and compassion. May my memory be a blessing.

I don't know what You have in store for me now, God; I don't know what lies beyond this world. But I believe my soul is eternal and will return to You. I hope You will welcome me in love. I hope to be reunited with loved ones I have lost and to watch over those I must now leave. I place my body and soul in Your Hands, God, and pray that You will be beside me through this next journey. Amen

Recalling our loved ones lost in the pandemic

We lovingly recall the sacred and beautiful lives of far too many of our loved ones who have perished in this ongoing pandemic. May all in our community and in our country and throughout this world find comfort and solace in the midst of this virulent pandemic. May we and our world strive to heal and be touched by everlasting love and undying gentle memories.

64 “Our Remembrance Is Their Eternal Legacy”

The scourge of terrorism brought grieving and deep sorrow to families in and Washington - and around the globe, acts of violent fanaticism darken our world with horror.

Despite all we lovingly remember the courage and the heroism of so many.

Despite all, we lovingly remember the reservoirs of love and beautiful moments which remain with us forever.

We pray for strength for those who grieve so that darkness does not overshadow bright memories.

We pray for comfort, compassion and a renewal of hopes and visions of harmony, strength and shalom.

We lovingly remember:

` Aaron Horwitz, 24, member of the family of Alan and Carla Kudisch. Aaron was employed at Cantor Fitzgerald and was lost on September 11, 2001.

Patrick J. Lyons, 34, member of the family of Tina and Donald Gibbons. Pat was a firefighter and was lost on September 11, 2001. Laurence Polatsch, 32, member /of the family of David and Susan Bodian. Larry was employed at Cantor Fitzgerald and was lost on September 11, 2001. 9 II Scott J. Weingard, 29, son of Steve Weingard (of blessed memory) and Bonnie Weingard (of blessed memory). Scottie was employed at Cantor Fitzgerald and was lost on September 11, 2001.

Please contact us to add the names of your family members, friend or loved one to this sacred tribute.

65 Psalm 23 A Psalm of David

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

God gives me repose in green meadows.

God leads me beside the still waters to revive my spirit.

God guides me on the right path, for that is Divine nature.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I fear no harm, for You are with me.

Your staff and Your rod comfort me.

You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life.

And now I shall dwell in the House of the Almighty forever.

66 In sacred memory of the Six Million:

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering presence, among the holy and the pure, whose radiance is like the heavens, to the souls of all the men, women, and children of the House of Israel who were slaughtered, strangled, and burned in the Shoah. May they rest in paradise. Master of mercy, may they find eternal shelter beneath Your sheltering wings, and may their souls be bound up in the bond of life. ADONAI is their portion. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen. In loving memory of all those whom we recall:

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace among the holy and the pure, in Your sheltering Presence, to the souls of all our beloved who have gone to their eternal home. May their memory endure as inspiration for deeds of tzedakah and goodness in our lives. May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.

67 May God comfort us and the souls of the soldiers of the of America who gave their lives sanctifying God’s name, who died heroic deaths for the sake of our country, the United States of America. The memory of their heroic deeds will never perish from us. May their souls be bound in the Bond of Life with the souls of Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov, Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah and with the souls of the other heroes and righteous men and women who are in the Garden of Eden. And let us say: Amen.

Prayer for the Safety of the American Military Forces

Almighty God on High, watch over us from your Sanctified Abode and bless the valiant troops of the American military forces who risk their lives to protect the welfare of all your creation. Benevolent God, be their shelter and fortress, and do not allow them to falter. May harmony dwell in their ranks, victory in their battalions. Fill their hearts with faith and courage to thwart the schemes of our enemies and to abol- ish every rule of evil and inhumanity. Protect them on land, in the air and on the sea, and vanquish their adversar- ies. Guide them in peace, lead them toward peace, and return them speedily to their families alive and unharmed, as it is written: "God will shield you from all evil; He will guard your soul, God will safeguard your departure and arrival, from now and forevermore." Grant us true peace in fulfillment of the prophecy, "Nation shall not lift up sword against another nation, nor shall they learn war anymore." Let all the inhabitants of the world know that Dominion is Yours, and Your Name inspires awe upon all that You have created. May this be Your will, and let us say, Amen.

69 Hallowed and enhanced may God be throughout the world of God’s own creation. May God cause Divine sovereignty soon to be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen. May God be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, acclaimed and hon- ored, extolled and exalted may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes which mortals can utter. And let us say: Amen. Let there be abundant peace from Heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all the people Israel. And let us say: Amen. God who brings peace to God’s universe will bring peace to us and to all the people Israel. And let us say: Amen.

70 Our Creator, the Supreme Ruler, delights in life. Because of God’s love for us, and because we are so few, each of us is important in God’s kingdom. Though we are flesh and blood, we are irreplaceable. When one of the House of Israel dies, there is loss of glory in God’s Holy kingdom and God’s grandeur is diminished. Therefore, members of the House of Israel, all of you who mourn and all of you who remem- ber on this day, let us fix our hearts on our Parent in Heaven, our Ruler and our Redeemer, and let us pray for ourselves, and for God too, that the Almighty’s sovereignty be hallowed and enhanced, glori- fied and celebrated.

71 Memorial Prayer for the Defenders of Israel

For Those Who Died in the Israeli Wars A king of flesh and blood who goes out to And if we pray thus for each one who dies; war against his enemies How much the more so for our dear Brings forth his force to kill and to brothers and sisters, be killed. The children of Zion, There is doubt whether he loves The slaughtered ones of the land of Israel, his soldiers Whose blood was spilled for the glory of Or whether he does not love his soldiers, His name Whether they are important in his eyes. And for His people And even if they are important in his eyes, And for His land They are no more important than corpses. And for His inheritance. But our King, Therefore, oh our brethren, the whole The King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed house of Israel, be He, Who mourn in this mourning. Desires life, loves peace and pursues We turn our hearts to our Father in Heaven, peace, The King of Israel and its Redeemer. Loves Israel His people and has chosen And we pray us from all the nations, For ourselves Not because we are greater in number, And for Him: For we are the least in number. Yitgadal v’yitdadash sh’may raba And because He loves us and we are few B’olma deev’ra hirutay, v’yamleekh in number, malhutay Each one of us is as important in His eyes V’yatzmah Veekarev M’sheehay... as a whole regiment. That we may be worthy of live and see Therefore we pray after the death With our very eyes, of each Jew O’seh Shalom bimromav Hu b’rahamav Yitgadal, v’yitkadash, sh’may raba Yaseh Shalom aleynu v’al kol Yisrael, May the power of the Name be magnified, That He who, is in His mercies, makes and may no lessening of power come peace in the heavens to Him Will make peace for us Who is blessed and sanctified And for all Israel In the worlds He has created according And let us say, to His will. 72 A Guide for Mourners Introduction______

Judaism can enrich our lives in times of sadness as well as in times of joy. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Jewish approach to death and mourning. Imbued with psychological insight, pro- vides mourners with a unique source of guidance and emotional sup- port. It is our prayer that this guide will reveal some of the wisdom and beauty of Jewish tradition and Conservative Judaism’s commitment to that tradition. This Guide contains HALAKHOT and MINHAGIM (“Laws” and “Customs”) developed to bring honor to the deceased and comfort to the bereaved. Discuss with the Rabbi any questions you may have that are raised by this booklet. Rabbi Buechler can guide, instruct, and counsel dur- ing this most difficult time and the healing wisdom of Judaism will profoundly help you. May God bring comfort to all who mourn.

Before the Funeral______A mourner (in the Halakhic sense) is one who has lost a parent, spouse, sibling, or child. The formal period of mourning begins after burial. From the time of the death until the burial, the mourner is called an ONEN. The primary obligation of the Onen is to make all the necessary funeral arrangements. At the same time, pleasures, such as drinking wine, eating meat, and conjugal relations, are avoided. Please call the Rabbi before setting times or making final arrange- ments for the funeral service.

Respect for the Dead______Our care for a body after death reflects our devotion to a person in life, and our reverence for God who gave that life. The dead are not to be left unattended. Thus, Jewish funeral directors should be asked to provide a SHOMER (“guard”) who will stay with the body until the funeral, reciting Psalms. The Jewish funeral director should also be asked to arrange for TAHARAH (“purification”). During Taharah the body is respectfully cleansed by a HEVRAH KADISHAH (“burial society”).

73 The deceased should be dressed in TAKHIRIKHIM (“burial gar- ments”), rather than in regular clothes. Our taught that rich and poor alike are dressed in the same simple white garments, for death we are all equal before God. One should be buried with the TALLIT (“prayer shawl”) worn during one’s lifetime, after one of the TZITZIT (“fringes”) has been cut.

Judaism teaches that a body should return naturally to the elements of the earth from which it was created. Autopsy is prohibited unless it will help save a life, or is required by the civil authorities. Embalming, which is rarely required by civil authorities, is forbidden by Jewish law. The casket must be wooden and simple. Displaying the body is contrary to Jewish law. “Visitation” prior to the day of the funeral is foreign to Jewish practice. The burial must take place as soon as possible. Where delay is unav- oidable it should be kept to a minimum.

It is also a Mitzvah, a positive precept, to donate organs and tissue at the end of one’s life. There is no greater kavod ha-met (honor to the deceased) than to bring healing to the living. Organ donations do not delay funeral arrangements and are fully in accordance with Jewish Law. Organ donor cards are available from Rabbi Buechler.

Just before the funeral service, the Rabbi leads the immediate mourn- ers in performing KRIAH (“tearing”), and in reciting the blessing that proclaims God as “the Righteous Judge.” A tear is made in the clothing. This serves as a sign of mourning. For a parent the tear is made on the left side, over the heart; for others it is made on the right side (of a jack- et, shirt, sweater, or tie). Many people today cut a black ribbon which has been pinned to the clothes. The ribbon is not worn on Shabbat. After the seven days of mourning (Shivah), the ribbon is worn unobtru- sively until the end of the thirty days of mourning.

The simple service consists of readings (especially from the Psalms), a HESPED (“eulogy”), and the EL MALEI RAHAMIM prayer. Flowers and instrumental music are inappropriate.

The deceased must be buried in the ground, fulfilling the Biblical teaching, “Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” Thus the casket is wooden. Cremation, mausoleum interment, and sealed burial vaults are forbidden. At graveside prayers are recited that remind us that God gives life and receives it back. Although God’s ways are often incomprehensible to us, we believe that there is meaning and purpose in all that God does.

74 Accompanying the dead to their final resting place and participating personally in the burial are great Mitzvot. Those present are encouraged to place earth into the grave, as an expression of farewell and honor. After the burial, family and friends form parallel rows. As the mour- ners walk between the rows, our first words of consolation are offered. After leaving the cemetery it is traditional to rinse our hands. A pitcher of water is placed outside the Shivah home door for this purpose.

Stages of Mourning The Jewish approach temporarily removes mourners from the every- day world, allows them to come to terms with the loss, and then gradu- ally brings them back to normalcy. The first stage of Jewish mourning is called ANINUT. It is from the time of death until burial. This stage allows the Onen to arrange for the funeral. Following the burial is SHIVAH. During Shivah mourners remain home, away from business and other concerns. It is a time for contem- plation, a time for remembering, a time for grieving and coping with the finality of death and the ultimate significance of life. SHLOSHIM (“30 days”) is the stage observed after Shiva. Mourners leave home, go back to work and re-enter the world of normal living. Joyous events or entertainment, however, are avoided. Shloshim is a transition stage; we have returned to the world, but daily we are reminded of our loss. Sheloshim is the thirtieth day after burial. For the death of a parent, the period of mourning continues for a year. It is true that we probably never fully recover from the loss of a close relative. But we must continue living our lives. Observing Jewish tradition helps us to do this, stage by stage.

Shivah Shivah means “seven,” and refers to the seven day mourning period that begins with burial. The day of burial counts as the first day of Shivah. Shivah ends on the morning of the seventh day. Mourners may observe Shivah in any home, preferably at the home where the deceased lived. A candle, provided by the Jewish funeral director, is kindled upon returning from the cemetery. No BERAKHAH (“blessing”) is recited. The flame may symbolize the human soul. Mirrors, symbols of vanity, as well as distraction during services, are covered during Shivah in public areas of the home.

75 The first meal eaten by the mourners during Shivah is called SE’UDAT HAVRA’AH (“meal of consolation”). We must eat to live. Mourners are thus taught that life goes on, and that by eating, they are taking the first steps in coping with death. Friends should prepare this meal, consisting of at least bread and a hard boiled egg (according to some, a symbol of life). During Shivah, certain restrictions are observed. Mourners do not use cosmetics, shave or cut the hair. Wearing of leather shoes, engaging in conjugal relations, listening to music, or watching television, are considered pleasures, and are thus inappropriate during the week of mourning. Our synagogue as well as Jewish funeral directors provide boxes or benches for mourners, who sit on them as a sign to others of mourning and sorrow. If services are not held at the Shivah home, mourners may leave home to attend synagogue services. Kaddish is recited at each service. Shabbat during or at the conclusion of Shivah is to be observed in the traditional manner. On Shabbat neither torn clothing nor the ribbon is worn. Mourners go to the synagogue for Shabbat services. On Friday evening, after the prayer L’KHA DODI, the Rabbi leads the congregation in reciting the traditional formula of consolation. At the conclusion of Shivah, mourners leave the home. Mourners take a walk around the block, a symbolic way of showing that they are ending one stage of mourning and are now returning to a semblance of normal liv- ing.

Consoling Mourners Jewish law provides an etiquette of behavior when visiting a Shivah home. Remember, your presence is more important than any words you might say. Our tradition teaches us to console mourners with the phrase “HA-MAKOM Y’NAHEM ETKHEM B’TOKH SH’AR AVELEI TZIYON VIRUSHALAYIM.” (“May God comfort you together with all the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”) Close friends should see to it that meals are provided for the mour- ners. Contributions in memory of the deceased are more appropriate than gifts brought to the Shivah home. Visitors to a Shivah home should not create a party atmosphere by overindulgence in food or idle conver- sation. Do not try to distract mourners from confronting their loss. Probably the most meaningful thing you can do at a Shivah home is to share your memories of the deceased with the mourners. Keep your visit brief, and do not stay late. Visit also after Shivah ends. This is usually a very lonely time for those who have suffered a grievous loss.

76 Shloshim Shloshim is the thirty day period of mourning. The observance of Shloshim begins with the conclusion of Shivah and continues for twenty three more days. Mourners during Shloshim curtails pleasures and cele- brations. With the conclusion of Shloshim, obligations of mourning cease toward relatives other than parents. When a funeral takes place before or during a Jewish holiday, the period of Shivah or Shloshim differs. Consult the Rabbi.

The Year of Mourning A year of mourning is observed after the death of a parent. This year begins with the day of death (unlike Shivah and Shloshim, which begin with the burial) and lasts for twelve months. During this time mourners curtail participation in entertainment and joyous celebrations. After the death of a parent, Kaddish is recited by sons and daughters for eleven Hebrew months. Mourners are encouraged to recite Kaddish for other relatives as well. Hiring a stranger to recite Kaddish does not fulfill the personal obligations. Attend our daily morning and evening minyan and let the Kaddish be a bridge of love between you and your loved one, and a bridge which links you to our supportive minyan and caring Synagogue com- munity.

Unveiling A monument may be erected over a grave at any time. Although a public unveiling ceremony is not required by Jewish law, many people choose to have a formal unveiling a few months to a year after the death of a loved one. It serves as a milestone in the process of mourning. Serving food or drink in a cemetery is inappropriate.

Yizkor The memorial service for the dead is recited on Yom Kippur, Sh’mini Atzeret, the last day of Pesah, and the second day of Shavuot, during the course of the regular YOM TOV (“holiday”) services. Mourners during their first year of bereavement may join in the Yizkor prayers. It is not necessary to leave the sanctuary if not saying Yizkor.

Yahrzeit Yahrzeit is observed on the yearly anniversary of the Hebrew date of death. Attend services and recite Kaddish. The Rabbi can help you determine the proper dates. A candle should be kindled for Yahrzeit. Visiting the grave, studying Torah, and giving a donation to Tzedakah are appropriate ways to honor and remember our departed.

77 Kindling the Yahrzeit Light

The yahrzeit candle should burn from sunset to sunset, on the anniver- sary of the day of death according to the Hebrew calendar, starting on the evening preceding the day. A selection from Psalms or other passages found elsewhere in this book may be read. There is no special prayer or benediction to be recited. It is appropriate to meditate briefly, silently or aloud. Some suggested reflections follow.

I now recall my dear ______who has gone to his/her eternal home. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life, in peace. Amen.

Zekher tzadik livrakham. The memory of the righteous is a blessing. May my life continue to embrace the life and deeds, the words and thoughts of ______who has gone to his/her eternal home. May he/she rest in peace. Amen.

O merciful God, I turn to You in prayer on the yahrzeit of the death of my dear ______. Be with me as I stand in remembrance and in loving recollection. As I light this candle in his/her memory, I put my trust in You.

Renew my strength, O God. I am grateful for the years of the life of ______. Help me to understand how my life has been formed and shaped by what he/she was and by what he/she did. Help me to make part of my life a living monument of holiness to his/her memory. May he/she rest in peace. Amen.

Death has claimed a loved one, Thus reminding us of our own mortality.

Our days on earth are limited; We know not to whom the morrow belongs.

Yet we often postpone for the future Deeds which should be performed today.

We wait too long to show kindness, To speak words of gratitude and concern.

We wait too long to set aside hatreds, To banish petty grievances and resentments.

We wait too long to forgive the hurts we have suffered, And to ask forgiveness for those we have inflicted.

We wait too long to set aside selfishness, To give of our time and to share our bounty.

We wait too long to expand our horizons, To enlarge our minds, to nourish our souls.

We wait too long to make the most of our gifts, To nurture creative spirits, to strive for growth.

We wait too long to give the love Which may no longer be needed tomorrow.

We wait too long to discipline ourselves, To master and take charge of our lives.

We wait too long to become better Jews, More learned, more devoted, more caring.

In tribute to our departed, let us now resolve To wait no longer, to delay no more;

Rather, let us begin to do now, Those good things which can be done today.

80 Life Here and Now ... In spite of the excellence which the afterlife holds in store for the righteous, there is no craving for death in the history of Jewish piety. While it is true that the condition of the life beyond is eternity, it was maintained that the quality of living here and now has an excellence not given in the afterlife: freedom, serving Him in freedom. It is greater to struggle on earth than to be an angel in heaven. Earthly life, mortal life, is precisely the arena where the covenant between God and man must be fulfilled.

The love of life calls for resistance to death, resistance to the last, unconditionally.

Life here is where partnership abides between God and man. With death, man surrenders his freedom, and only God's will is done. The soul is receptive, there is no room for freedom.

Life here and now is the task. Every moment can be an achieve- ment.

The body is not a prison but an opportunity. Still, for all its glory, life here and now is regarded as a vestibule, as preparation. Yet no one looked forward with pleasure to life after death.

Just because the afterlife is a completion, life here and now is an opportunity, and it was considered a loss to leave the realm of here and now, because once the threshold is crossed, the opportunity is gone.

Life is revealing of the divine, while death is concealing. To be alive is to be in the midst of the people, and we must resist being taken away from the midst of the people. But once the moment of parting comes, a benediction is uttered: Blessed be Thou, our God, King of the Universe, the true Judge. Amen.

We must distinguish between being human and human being. We are born human beings. What we must acquire is being human. Being human is the essential—the decisive—achievement of a human being...

Abraham Joshua Heschel

81 Holding on and letting go

Hold on and let go. On the surface of things contradictory counsel. But one does not negate the other. The two are complementary, dialectical, two sides of one coin.

Hold on -- death is not the final word. The grave no oblivion. Hold on in Kaddish, Yahrzeit, Yizkor. No gesture, no kindness, no smile evaporates -- Every kindness, every embrace has its afterlife in our minds, our hearts, our hands.

Hold on and let go. Sever the fringes of the tallit of the deceased, the knot that binds us to the past.

Hold on Not enslaving memory that sells the future to the past nor recollection that makes us passive, listless, resigned. But memory that releases us for a new life.

Return the dust to the earth not to bury hope but to resurrect the will to live.

Artists, aerialists on a swinging trapeze letting go one ring to catch another, to climb to higher heights.

Hold on and let go. a courageous duality that endows our life with meaning. Neither denying the past nor foreclosing the future.

The flow of life, the divine process gives and takes, retains and creates. Old and new yesterday and tomorrow, both in one embrace.

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh Blessed be the name of the Lord.

82 Light for the dark hours

The Dubner Maggid has left us a parable whose wisdom can serve as a beacon of light for the dark hours.

A king once owned a large, beautiful diamond of which he was justly proud, for it had no equal anywhere. One day, the diamond accidentally sustained a deep scratch. The king summoned the most skilled diamond cutters and offered them a great reward if they could remove the blemish. But none could repair the jewel.

After some time, a gifted artisan came to the king and promised to make the rare diamond even more beautiful than it had been before the mishap. The king was impressed by this confidence, and entrusted the precious stone to the artisan's care.

And the artisan kept the promise. With superb artistry, the artisan engraved a lovely rosebud around the imperfection, -using the scratch to make the stem.

We can emulate that artisan. When life bruises us and wounds us, we can use even the scratches to etch a portrait of beauty and charm.

83 The last word has not been spoken, the last sentence has not been written, the final verdict is not in. It's never too late to change my mind, my direction, to say "no" to the past and "yes" to the future, to offer remorse, to ask and give forgiveness

It is never too late to start all over again, to feel again, to love again, to hope again

It is never too late to overcome despair, to turn sorrow into resolve and pain into purpose

It is never too late to alter my world, not by magic incantations or manipulations of the cards or deciphering the stars

But by opening myself to curative forces buried within, to hidden energies, the powers in my interior self.

In sickness and in dying, it is never too late. Living, I teach, dying, I teach, how to face pain and fear. Others observe me, children, adults, students of life and death learn from my bearing, my posture, my philosophy.

It is never too late -- Some word of mine, some touch, some caress may be remembered. Some gesture may play a role beyond the last movement of my head and hand.

Write it on my epitaph that my loved ones be consoled. It is never too late.

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis

84 It is less distant now: A yahrzeit candle lit at home

The yahrzeit candle is different, announcing neither Sabbath nor festival. No benediction recited. No song sung. No psalm mandated.

Before this unlit candle without a quorum, I stand, unstruck match in my hand.

It is less distant now, the remembrance ritual of parents deceased. I am older now, closer to their age than before. I am older now, their aches in my body, their white hairs beneath my shaved skin, their wrinkles creased into my face.

It is less distant now. This ritual once made me think of them, now makes me think of me.

Once it revealed relationships to them, now it ponders on my children’s relationship to me. Once I wondered what to remember of them, now I ask what will my children remember of me: what smile, what grimace, what stories they will tell their children of me.

It is less distant now. How would I be remembered? How would I be mourned? Will they come to the synagogue? Light a candle? Recite the Kaddish?

It is less distant now. Once yahrzeit was about parents deceased, now it is of children alive. Once it was about a distant past, now it is about tomorrow.

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis

85 A Prayer for Returning to God After Enduring a Difficult Time

God, I need to know that You are with me, that You hear my cry. I long to feel Your presence not just this day, but every day. When I am weak and in pain, I need to know You are beside me, That in itself is often comfort enough.

I do not pretend to know Your ways, to know why this world You have created can be so beautiful, so magnificent, and yet so harsh, so ugly, and so full of hate.

The lot You have bestowed upon me is a heavy one. I am. angry. I want to know why: why the innocent must suffer, why life is so full of grief.

There are times when I want to have nothing to do withYou. When to think of You brings nothing but confusion and ambivalence.

And there are times, like this time, when I seek to return to You, when I feel the emptiness that comes when I am far from You.

Watch over me and my loved ones. Forgive me for all that I have not been. Help me to appreciate all that I have and to realize all that I have to offer.

Help me to find my way back to You so that I may never feel alone. Amen.

86 In Lasting Remembrance

The synagogue is our religious home and the meeting place in which we focus our spiritual energies in song and prayer. In supporting the sacred function and role of our synagogue, we give life to the memory of those who have preceded us.

It is a long-standing Jewish custom and tradition to give tzedakah to the synagogue in honor of our departed loved ones. By honoring them in this way we serve the living, and in doing so, perpetuate the memory of the departed.

There are many opportunities at the Dix Hills Jewish Center to do so. Some of these include: • Donation of Prayer Books and Chumash (Bible) • Memorial Plaques on the Yahrzeit Boards • Tikvah Fund • Donation of Special Gifts • Rabbi's Discretionary and Tzedakah Fund • Julian Sandler Minyan Chapel Dedications

Of the many mitzvot incumbent upon us, the advancement of the teach- ing of Torah and the raising of another generation of Jews committed to our faith are of primary importance. Support of our synagogue in the name of our departed helps insure that “the memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing.”

We urge you to give generously in this spirit. For further information or to discuss a special wish you may have, please contact the synagogue office.
