Rayner Introduction As we all know, the Emancipation was a great turning point in the history of Judaism, although ‘point' is hardly the right word, since it was a long-drawn- out process extending from the eighteenth century into the twentieth. Nevertheless the initial impact of it was often felt by a single generation, and in Germany by the generation of those born during the Napoleonic era. As we all know; too, the initial impact was for many of the newly emancipated German Jews a negative one so far as their Jewish religious life was concerned because the revolutionary educational, linguistic, cultural and social changes they experienced caused them to feel uncomfortable in the old- style synagogues. And as we all know as well, it is to this problem, of the alienation of emancipated Jewry from the traditional synagogue that the Reformers first and foremost addressed themselves. They believed that if only the synagogue services could be made more attractive, that would halt and perhaps reverse w the drift. 0 . _ {:1 j N In retrospect we can see that they were only partly right. There are other 8E}; factors besides the nature of synagogue worship which determine or influence the extent to which individuals will affirm their Jewish identity \ :8 " and adhere to their Jewish faith, and subsequent generations of Reformers 13E came to recognise that and to address themselves to these other issues also. (3 ‘1‘: Nevertheless the nature of synagogue worship is clearly a factor, and a big one. -

JEWISH STATISTICS 277 JEWISH STATISTICS The statistics of Jews in the world rest largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. THE UNITED STATES ESTIMATES As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or natural- ized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living in this country are based upon estimates. The Jewish population was estimated— In 1818 by Mordecai M. Noah at 3,000 In 1824 by Solomon Etting at 6,000 In 1826 by Isaac C. Harby at 6,000 In 1840 by the American Almanac at 15,000 In 1848 by M. A. Berk at 50,000 In 1880 by Wm. B. Indische Religionen als Gegenstand religionsphilosophischer Entwürfe. Salomon Formstecher und Samuel Hirsch über indisches „Heidentum“ von Hans-Michael Haußig Abstract During the 19th century, for the first time Jewish thinkers, influenced by philosophi- cal currents of their time, tried to give a new interpretation of Judaism by contextual- izing it in general history. Especially two representatives of Reform Judaism, Salomon Formstecher (1808–1889) and Samuel Hirsch (1815–1889) presented two works pursuing this direction. Both authors aimed for a scientific approach of Judaism and agreed that there exist only two religions in the world: Judaism and Heathenism. Both religions are in fundamental opposition to each other. Within their works, Formstecher and Hirsch dealt in a different manner with Indian religions. The paper will investigate the presenta- tion of Indian religions in both works in the frame of their conceptions on Heathenism. Zusammenfassung Im 19. Jahrhundert erschienen erstmalig grundlegende theologische bzw. religionsphi- losophische Entwürfe, die sich darum bemühten, unter dem Einfluss der maßgeblichen philosophischen Systeme ihrer Zeit das Judentum neu zu deuten und in den Rahmen der allgemeinen Menschheitsgeschichte einzuordnen. Es waren insbesondere zwei Ver- treter des Reformjudentums, Salomon Formstecher (1808–1889) und Samuel Hirsch (1815–1889), die im Abstand von nur einem Jahr (1841 bzw. 1842) zwei dementsprechen- de Entwürfe vorlegten. Beide Autoren streben eine wissenschaftliche Sichtweise auf das Judentum an und weisen darin eine Gemeinsamkeit auf, dass es ihrer Ansicht nach neben diesem als einzige Religion praktisch nur das Heidentum gibt. Judentum und Heidentum stehen in einem grundlegenden Gegensatz zueinander. Im Rahmen der Ausführung ihrer These gehen sowohl Formstecher als auch Hirsch in unterschiedlichem Maße auf die indischen Religionen ein. -

American Archaeologists in Turkey: Intellectual and Social Dimensions Charles Gates A standard Turkish concept about archaeology, one attested by my students, (Note 1) is that Turkey is exceptionally rich in archaeological remains and, as a result, foreigners naturally want to work here. But the world is full of archaeological remains, even North America. The reasons why American and other foreign archaeologists might choose to undertake research in Turkey instead of in other countries are more complex than the Turkish public generally realizes. In this article I examine the motives of American archaeologists who have worked in Turkey. What they have found will be less important than why they came here in the first place. Aspects of the problem include the academic/intellectual framework into which the archaeology of Turkey fits in the United States, socio-political factors, and changes through time. American archaeology in Turkey is seen to be a component of US social and intellectual history, but it is a part of the social and intellectual history of Turkey as well. (Note 2) Archaeology in Turkey can be divided into three major periods: Pre-Classical, Classical (Greek and Roman), and Medieval-Modern (Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman). This article is concerned with the American activities in the first two, the third having rarely been the primary focus of archaeological work except when the architectural history of specific buildings is under investigation. One further restriction: I shall concentrate on work done within the borders of the Turkish Republic of today, making only passing reference to research in adjacent areas once held by the Ottoman Empire. -

STRAUSS A traveler in ancient days whose journeys included visits to the great capitals of antiquity — Rome, Athens, Alexandria, Jerusalem — would have noted at least one circumstance which differentiated the Holy City from all the rest. Search as he might along her streets and among her public buildings, there were no monuments to her great men. For the Jews erected no statues of Moses or the Prophets. Not even the captains and the kings were ever immortalized in bronze or marble, as was the habit in the countries round about the Holy Land. This custom beyond doubt had its origin in the prohibition in the second Commandment against the making of graven images since artistic ability was not wanting, and indeed was of a high order. The Jews remembered their great men without reliance upon tangible memorial or physical stimulus to mem- ory. They remembered them for their words and deeds. ''There be those," they sang, "who have passed away from the earth, yet whose names are sweet like honey in the mouth." We have forgotten more men by far than we remember. Why, then, do we remember the few men whom we call great? I think there are four reasons. First, we are grateful in some way to them and, in a larger measure, to the Providence which provided them. -

Recent intellectual debate has examined questions of national, ethnic, gender, class, and community identities, of individ- ual and group identity, and of the formation of identity. A spectrum of positions has emerged from this debate. On one end, identity is viewed as "real," intrinsic to individuals and com- munities or even biologically based. On the other, identity is conceived of as social fiction, constructed culturally for political and historical reasons. On the whole, serious scholars have rejected the former view. Archivists should be cognizant of this fact because they are major players in the business of identity politics, whether they are conscious of it or not. Archivists appraise, collect, and preserve the props with which notions of identity are built. In turn, notions of identity are confirmed andjustified as historical documents validate their authority. The American Jewish Historical Society t the close of the nineteenth century, American Jews were confronted with a profound philosophical dilemma. An unfortunate confluence Aof political, economic, and social conditions in the United States and Europe swept the very meaning of Jewish identity into disarray, and left American Jews increasingly uneasy about their status as Americans. -

Exploring Judaism’s Denominational Divide Coming to America… Rabbi Brett R. Isserow OLLI Winter 2020 A very brief early history of Jews in America • September 1654 a small group of Sephardic refugees arrived aboard the Ste. Catherine from Brazil and disembarked at New Amsterdam, part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. • The Governor, Peter Stuyvesant, petitioned the Dutch West India Company for permission to expel them but for financial reasons they overruled him. • Soon other Jews from Amsterdam joined this small community. • After the British took over in 1664, more Jews arrived and by the beginning of the 1700’s had established the first synagogue in New York. • Officially named K.K. Shearith Israel, it soon became the hub of the community, and membership soon included a number of Ashkenazi Jews as well. • Lay leadership controlled the community with properly trained Rabbis only arriving in the 1840’s. • Communities proliferated throughout the colonies e.g. Savannah (1733), Charleston (1740’s), Philadelphia (1740’s), Newport (1750’s). • During the American Revolution the Jews, like everyone else, were split between those who were Loyalists (apparently a distinct minority) and those who supported independence. • There was a migration from places like Newport to Philadelphia and New York. • The Constitution etc. guaranteed Jewish freedom of worship but no specific “Jew Bill” was needed. • By the 1820’s there were about 3000-6000 Jews in America and although they were spread across the country New York and Charleston were the main centers. • In both of these, younger American born Jews pushed for revitalization and change, forming B’nai Jeshurun in New York and a splinter group in Charleston. -
