Sevilla Society for Ecological Restoration International 2005 World Conference on Ecological Restoration Zaragoza, Spain, Europe 12-18 September 2005 Preface This volume contains abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2005 World Conference on Ecological Restoration. They have been distributed in different sessions according to the appropriate conference program and the author’s specifications, as much as possible. The Conference Program includes global, landscape, ecosystem, habitat, population, social, economic, urban, damaged and contaminated sites, and technical aspects of environmental restoration, as well as symposia proposed and arranged by participants. Abstracts are arranged alphabetically in three groups (plenary, oral, and poster presentations) to facilitate organization. Texts have not been edited to respect original documents The name of each presenter is underlined. There is an author index at the end of the volume. Thanks are extended to the Local Organizing Committee, the Scientific Com- mittee, and to SER International staff for help in evaluating the abstracts and planning the conference program. If there are questions or requirements relat- ed to this volume and scientific aspects of the conference, we remain at your disposition. Francisco A. [email protected]. www.RestorationPlanning.com ** Water and Sewage Department, Tul Karem Municipality, Palestine. [email protected] History is replete with examples of wars and conflicts related to water and rivers. The Alexander River Restoration Project, is a recent example of how a cross-border river can be an opportunity for cooperation between people who are in conflict, rather than the reason for the conflict. The Alexander River flows from the Palestinian city of Nablus, through Vadi Zaymar, up to the estu- ary of the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. It crosses under the separation wall in a large pipe, next to the Palestinian city of Tul Karem. The Alexander River Restoration Project, launched in Israel in 1995, is a comprehensive, interdisci- plinary environmental project. The restored parts of the river, the ground water that both sides use for drinking, and the people who live on both sides of the wall suffered from the raw sewage which caused severe environmental and health problems. Since 1996 the brave local Palestinian and Israeli leaders from Tul Karem and Emek Hefer and their professional teams, have been co- operating on this environmental project. Two agreements, unique in nature, were signed, a joint plan was prepared, and with the assistance and mediation of the German government, works have been carried out to reduce the pollu- tion. The rehabilitation of the sewage treatment ponds of Tul Karem was com- pleted, and solved part of the severe environmental problems the people of Tul Karem face. Large scale plans remain for the coming years. The remaining question is: Can this unique cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians, which survived even during the most difficult times, be an example for a better future in the Middle East and elsewhere? Leopoldo Rojo Serrano Ministry for the Environment, and Rural and Marine Environments Spain 1. Hydrological and forest restoration activities. The General State Administration and the Autonomous Communities collaborate in activities and actions regarding hydrological and forest restoration of watersheds to control water erosion. The following actions have been performed during the two-year period of 2006-2007: Reforestation Reforestation has taken place using species of the highest ecological value possible given the climate, topography and soil conditions; it was financed by the Ministry for the Environment and carried out by the Technical Services of the Autonomous Communities over a total surface area of 4,182 hectares, equalling €17,689,684. Fig. 1. 11-year reforestation of Populus alba. Basque Fig. 2. 9-year reforestation of Prunus avium. La Rioja. Country. Repairs Repairs have been performed on flood basins and watercourses as an immediate active defence in order to reduce the possibility of water carrying and dragging solids, so that it is not prevented from merging into the riverbeds and reservoir network. This has meant the construction of 20,622 m3 of berms and dikes made of hydraulic masonry and gabions, equalling €3,914,845. Treatments for the improvement of forest areas In order to maintain and improve the good silvicultural state of the protective plant cover, these treatments have been applied to a total surface area of 6,183 hectares, equalling €16,214,232.

E-mail [email protected] Received: 20 November 2015 Returned for revision: 22 December 2015 Accepted: 8 January 2016 Published electronically: 20 April 2016 Background and Aims The plant family Asteraceae (Compositae) exhibits remarkable morphological variation in the styles of its members. Lack of studies on the styles of the sister families to Asteraceae, Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae, obscures our understanding of the origin and evolution of this reproductive feature in these groups. The aim of this work was to perform a comparative study of style morphology and to discuss the relevance of im- portant features in the evolution of Asteraceae and its sister families. Methods The histochemistry, venation and general morphology of the styles of members of Goodeniaceae, Calyceraceae and early branching lineages of Asteraceae were analysed and put in a phylogenetic framework to dis- cuss the relevance of style features in the evolution of these families. Key Results The location of lipophilic substances allowed differentiation of receptive from non-receptive style papillae, and the style venation in Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae proved to be distinctive.

  • UIMP 2021 – Quo Vadis Europa: Towards a Geopolitical European Union
UIMP 2021 – Quo Vadis Europa: towards a geopolitical European Union GENERAL OVERVIEW The European Commission committed at the beginning of its legislature to respond to global challenges using a geopolitical approach. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world’s preeminent geopolitical and economic concerns focused around issues such as nuclear proliferation, the resurgence of populism, and financial instability; these concerns are now compounded by new challenges, such as the vulnerability of medical resource supply chains and medicine production processes, among others. The mounting confrontation between the United States and China, and its commercial and digital, as well as ideological and political dimensions, has amplified considerably due to the crisis. In this changing context, the European Union (EU) cannot afford to be absent from global leadership in the post-pandemic world. Meanwhile, the impulse given by the agreements in Europe for the Recovery Funds represents an important step towards further integration, and reinforces Europe’s role in the world. This course will offer in various sessions insights and answers to the following questions: How can the EU increase its strategic autonomy in key areas such as digitalization? How can Europe secure the economic balance necessary for it to position itself as an influential geopolitical player? How can the EU increase its capacity for global action, and export its environmental and trade policies as well as its democratic values? What is the relation of the EU with its strategic

L.D evyatkin & A. L Monastyrskii received 5.V.2003 Summary: A total of 67 species is added to the list of Hesperiidae of southern Vietnam, 15 of them being new for the country as a whole. A new subspecies, Pyroneura callineura natalia subspec. nov. is described and illustrated. Taxonomic notes on certain species are presented. Since the previous publication summarizing the knowledge of the Hesperiidae in the southern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000), several further localities have been visited by research expeditions and individual collectors. The annotated list below is based predominantly on the material collected in the Cat Tien Na ture Reserve in 2000 (no year is given for the label data in the list), which was most profoundly studied and proved to be very rich and diverse in terms of the butterfly fauna, and contains new records for the south of the country along with some taxonomic corrections made in view of the new data. Although some of the areas concerned in this paper may be geographically attributed to the southern part of Central Vietnam (or Annam), they were not regarded in our previous publica tions dedicated to the northern and central areas of the country (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 1999, 2002), the new data thus being supplementary to those published before on the south ern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000).

Its phylogenetic placement has remained controversial since Astianthus has unusual morphological characters such as a four-loculed ovary, and simple, pulvinate, verticillate leaves. Methods: Here we used three plastid markers ndhF, rbcL, and trnL-F, wood, and bark anatomical data to investigate the phylogenetic placement of Astianthus and assign it to one of Bignoniaceae’s main clades. Results: Our molecular phylogenetic analyses indicated that Astianthus belongs in tribe Tecomeae s.s., where other charismatic Neotropical Bignoniaceae genera such as Campsis and Tecoma are currently placed. Wood and bark anatomy support this placement, as Astianthus reunites a unique combination of features only known from members of Tecomeae s.s., such as storied axial parenchyma, the co-occurrence of homo- and heterocellular rays, septate fibers, and scattered phloem fibers in the bark.
