El estudio se fundamentó en interpretación de imágenes de satélite, técnicas de SIG, levantamientos de campo, encuestas y análisis estadísticos. Particularmente se tipificaron los cercos vivos atendiendo a la distribución en el paisaje, origen y manejo; se realizó la caracterización florística y estructural mediante transectos de 50x2 m2; se colectaron muestras botánicas para identificación taxonómica y se hicieron encuestas sobre uso y manejo. Los resultados muestran que la zona se configura por una matriz de potreros (60% del área) y 345 parches de bosques de cañadas, cercos vivos, fragmentos de bosques y sistemas de cultivos. Se destacan 49 parches de cercos vivos entre plantados y no plantados. -

ISSN 2153 733X NEW SPECIES OF BACCHARIS (ASTERACEAE) FROM WESTERN MEXICO GUY L. NESOM 2925 Hartwood Drive Fort Worth, Texas 76109 [email protected] ABSTRACT Four new species of Baccharis are described from western Mexico and one is raised in rank from variety. Baccharis charucoensis Nesom, sp. nov. , from the Rio Mayo region along Chihuahua-Sonora border, is similar in habit and related to B. macrocephala of eastern Mexico but differs in its linear leaves with stiffly ciliate margins. Baccharis horizontalis Nesom, sp. nov. , from western Durango and adjacent Sinaloa, is similar and closely related to the widespread B. serrifolia but differs in its sessile leaves and distant geographical location. Baccharis supplex Nesom, sp. nov. , from southeastern Durango (mpios. Mezquital and Súchil) differs from the sympatric B. thesioides in its rhizomatous habit with one or few stems from the base, broader leaves, and few-flowered capitulescence. Baccharis praetermissia Nesom, sp. nov. , from the Cape Region of Baja California Sur, is distinct in its erect habit, nearly glabrous stems, glabrous, elliptic leaves, dense capitulescence, and non-accrescent pappus, and disjunct geography within sect. Aristidentes . Baccharis multiflora var. herbacea McVaugh from western Michoacan is recognized here at specific rank: Baccharis herbacea (McVaugh) Nesom, comb. et stat. nov. Each of these five species apparently is rare. In a review of Baccharis in CAS-DS, TEX-LL, and UC-JEPS, collections indicate that four distinct species are without names. They are formally described here, and another is recognized by raising its rank from variety to species. -

Besides surveying and marking the border with monuments, these were expeditions that made extensive animal and plant collections, 10 Spotlight on a Native often by U.S. Army physicians. Botanists John M. Bigelow (Charphochaete bigelovii), Charles Plant C. Parry (Agave parryi), Arthur C. V. Schott (Stephanomeria schotti), Edmund K. ABSTRACT Background. Mexico is one of the most floristically rich countries in the world. Despite significant contributions made on the understanding of its unique flora, the knowledge on its diversity, geographic distribution and human uses, is still largely fragmented. Unfortunately, deforestation is heavily impacting this country and native tree species are under threat. The loss of trees has a direct impact on vital ecosystem services, affecting the natural capital of Mexico and people's livelihoods. Given the importance of trees in Mexico for many aspects of human well-being, it is critical to have a more complete understanding of their diversity, distribution, traditional uses and conservation status. We aimed to produce the most comprehensive database and catalogue on native trees of Mexico by filling those gaps, to support their in situ and ex situ conservation, promote their sustainable use, and inform reforestation and livelihoods programmes. Methods. A database with all the tree species reported for Mexico was prepared by compiling information from herbaria and reviewing the available floras. Species names were reconciled and various specialised sources were used to extract additional species information, i.e. -

Armour and led by David Fairchild, a plant hunting expedition organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) targeted the Caribbean Islands and the Guianas between December 31, 1931 and April 1, 1932. Three other agricultural scientists joined this plant collecting enterprise: namely, Leonard R. Toy (from the University of Florida) and Harold Frederick and Palemon H. Dorsett (both from the USDA). Seven of the Bahamian islands were explored between December 31, 1931 and January 15, 1932 and between March 29 – April 1, 1932. This contribution focuses on the Bahamian itinerary followed during this voyage. Documents and photos housed in the U.S. National Archives and the Library and Archives of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden; herbarium specimens found in the U.S. National Herbarium; and David Fairchild’s published accounts were the basis of our research. A total of 106 plant samples (89 species), including herbarium specimens and material for the USDA, were collected in this archipelago. Collections of an unidentified palm grown in the USDA Chapman Field Station, Miami resulted in the description of the Bahamian endemic Coccothrinax inaguensis in 1966 by Robert W. -
