Basavarajappa* Entomology Laboratory, DOS in Zoology, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore-570 006, India ABSTRACT: Agriculture ecosystems have provided congenial habitat for various butterfly species. The Papilionidae and Nymphalidae family member’s most of their life cycle is depended on natural plant communities amidst agriculture ecosystems. To record few butterflies viz., Papilio polytes, Graphium agamemnon, Ariadne merione and Junonia hierta, agriculture ecosystems were selected randomly and visited frequently by adapting five-hundred-meter length line transects during 2014 to 2016. Study sites were visited during 0800 to 1700 hours and recorded the ovipositing behaviour of gravid female of these butterfly species by following standard methods. Eggs along with the host plant leaves / shoot / twigs were collected in a sterilized Petri dish and brought to the laboratory for further studies. Eggs were maintained under sterilized laboratory conditions till hatching. Newly hatched larvae were fed with their preferred host plants foliage and reared by following standard methods. P. polytes and G. agamemnon and A. merione and J. hierta developmental stages included egg, larva, pupa and adult and these stages have showed significant variation (F=21.35; P>0.01). Further, all the four species had four moults and five instars in their larval stage. However, including larval period, pupal duration was also varied considerably among these species. Further, overall life cycle completed in 43, 32.5 to 40, 21 to 30 and 21 to 29 days by P. -

Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. N. Raghavendra, Kumar Arvind, G. K. Anushree and Tony Grace* Abstract Background: Butterflies are considered as bio-indicators of a healthy and diversified ecosystem. Endosulfan was sprayed indiscriminately in large plantations of Kasaragod district, Kerala which had caused serious threats to the ecosystem. In this study, we surveyed the butterflies for their abundance and diversity in three differentially endosulfan-affected areas viz., Enmakaje—highly affected area, Periye—moderately affected area, Padanakkad— unaffected area, carried out between the end of the monsoon season and the start of the winter season, lasting approximately 100 days. Seven variables viz., butterfly abundance (N), species richness (S), Simpson’s reciprocal index (D), the Shannon–Wiener index (H′), the exponential of the Shannon–Wiener index (expH′), Pielou’s evenness (J) and species evenness (D/S), related to species diversity were estimated, followed by the one-way ANOVA (F = 25.01, p < 0.001) and the Kruskal-Wallis test (H = 22.59, p < 0.001). Results: A population of three different butterfly assemblages comprised of 2300 butterflies which represented 61 species were encountered. Our results showed that Enmakaje displayed significantly lower butterfly diversity and abundance, compared to the other two communities. Conclusion: So far, this is the first study concerning the effect of endosulfan on the biodiversity of butterfly in the affected areas of Kasaragod, Kerala, India. -

L.D evyatkin & A. L Monastyrskii received 5.V.2003 Summary: A total of 67 species is added to the list of Hesperiidae of southern Vietnam, 15 of them being new for the country as a whole. A new subspecies, Pyroneura callineura natalia subspec. nov. is described and illustrated. Taxonomic notes on certain species are presented. Since the previous publication summarizing the knowledge of the Hesperiidae in the southern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000), several further localities have been visited by research expeditions and individual collectors. The annotated list below is based predominantly on the material collected in the Cat Tien Na ture Reserve in 2000 (no year is given for the label data in the list), which was most profoundly studied and proved to be very rich and diverse in terms of the butterfly fauna, and contains new records for the south of the country along with some taxonomic corrections made in view of the new data. Although some of the areas concerned in this paper may be geographically attributed to the southern part of Central Vietnam (or Annam), they were not regarded in our previous publica tions dedicated to the northern and central areas of the country (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 1999, 2002), the new data thus being supplementary to those published before on the south ern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000). -
