Dicranum Scoparium Broom Fork-Moss Key 129, 135, 139 Dicranales Dicranum scoparium Broom Fork-moss Key 129, 135, 139 5 mm 5 mm 1 cm Identification A medium- to large-sized plant (up to 10 cm), growing in yellow-green to dark green cushions or large patches. The leaves are 4–7.5 mm long, narrowly spearhead-shaped and taper to a long fine tip composed largely of the strong nerve. They are often somewhat curved, but can also be straight and are hardly altered when dry. The leaf margins are usually strongly toothed near the tip. The back of the nerve has raised lines of cells which are just visible with a hand lens. These are also toothed, making the tip of the leaf appear toothed all round. D. scoparium occasionally produces deciduous shoots with smaller leaves at the tip of the stems. The curved, cylindrical capsule is common in the north and west of Britain, and is borne on a long seta that is yellow above and reddish below. Similar species D. scoparium is quite variable and confusion is most likely with D. majus (p. 379) and D. fuscescens (p. 382). D. majus is a larger plant with longer, regular, strongly curved leaves showing little variation; if in doubt, your plant is almost certainly D. scoparium. D. fuscescens is similar in size to D. scoparium, but has a finer leaf tip with smaller teeth on the margins and lacks raised lines of cells on the back of the leaves. The leaves in D. fuscescens are crisped when dry, and in this state mixed stands of D. scoparium and D. fuscescens can be distinguished at a glance. D. bonjeanii (p. 380) is usually easily distinguished by its undulate leaves, but forms of D. scoparium with undulate leaves do occur in boggy places and can be confusing. The rare D. leioneuron (Smith, p. 202) may have fragile, small-leaved branches at the tip of normal shoots, but plants lacking this feature are difficult to distinguish fromD. scoparium. Habitat D. scoparium is a very common species which occurs in a wide range of habitats. Dicranum scoparium and Porella platyphylla taxa of bryophytes were used in the present study carried out to determine the free radical scavenging activities, fatty acid, and vitamin contents. In this study, it was aimed to underline the importance of bryophytes for scientific literature and to provide a basis for further studies on this subject. The data obtained in this study indicate that the DPPH radical scavenging effect of D. scoparium taxon is significantly higher than that of P. platyphylla taxon. It is known that there is a strong relationship between the phenolic compound content of methanol extracts of the plants and the DPPH radical scavenging efficiency. When the fatty acid contents were examined, it was observed that levels of all unsaturated fatty acids were higher in the P. platyphylla taxon than the D. scoparium taxon, except for α-Linolenic acid. When the vitamin contents of species were compared, it was determined that D-3, α -tocopherol, stigmasterol, betasterol amount was higher in Dicranum taxon.     Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live.

Th e media contents, as well as light and temperature were varied to fi nd the optimal conditions for spore germination, protonema growing, bud formation and gametophyte development. Th e best contitions for micropropagation or axenically bryo-farming is to grow D. scoparium on the MS medium enriched with sucrose (1.5%), at 18-20°C independent of light length condition. ФЕДОСОВ1 Abstract Three species of Dicranum with fragile leaves were usually recognized in Rus- sia: D. fragilifolium, D. tauricum and D. viride. However, our revision based on morphology and nrITS sequences reveals that two more species were overlooked. Collections from the Russian Far East, including both mainland and the Kuril Is- lands, usually treated as D. viride were found to be different from the european D. viride, thus supporting the resurrection of D. hakkodense Cardot that was synonymised with D. viride and not accepted for a long time as a distinct species. In addition to the resurrection of D. hakkodense, its distributional range is much expanded. One more species, Dicranum pacificum sp. nov. was revealed among the collections from Kam- chatka, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is clearly separated from the superficially similar D. fragilifolium, although probably not closely related to it. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that the group of Dicranum with fragile leaves is not monophyletic.
