    PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb­ able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc­ ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos­ sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless.

    H-New-Jersey All Things Les Paul: The Early Years of Recording Discussion published by Caitlin Biebrich on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Les Paul Legacy Series A Webinar with Gene Paul December 7, 2020 at 7:30pm REGISTER HERE This online talk is part of the Les Paul Legacy Series hosted by the Les Paul in Mahwah exhibit at the Mahwah Museum. Les Paul’s son, Gene Paul, will discuss the multifaceted history of Les and his many accomplishments. Gene Paul was born in 1944 and grew up listening to stories about his father’s accomplishments; Gene was especially curious about Les’ ‘sound on sound’ machine and was able to ask Les many questions about it and his other innovations. By 1959, Gene had become an accomplished drummer, travelling and performing with Les and Mary. In the late 1960’s, Les helped Gene get a job at Atlantic Records where he recorded with some of the greats of the time, including Aretha Franklin, The Modern Jazz Quartet and Gladys Knight. Gene is in a unique position to tell these stories, as he learned directly from his father. He went on to become a successful recording engineer himself. He is currently the chief mastering engineer at G&J Audio, a mixing and mastering studio for major and independent labels focused on reissues and new recordings. Opinions still vary as to how much (if at all) the sub and center channels are utilized. There are no standards on delivery formats (audio files on hard drives, CD-Rs or DVD-Rs; Genex MO; DA-88 or 98HR tapes; or 8-track 1- or 2-inch analog) or even how the monitor speakers should be set up in the control room (ITU standard or quad equidistant). Surround signal processing and methods differ significantly from stereo with a general consensus emerging: For surround sound mixing, with higher resolution and six channels to play music over, there is less need to process individual tracks or the mix buses like stereo, so everything fits down a 2-channel pipe. As liberating as this might seem, this quantum leap in sonics and mixing options is not without caveats: Each individual track's sound quality; the cohesiveness and detail of the overall mix; reverb and delay setup and use, and the quality assurance of the final encoding process are critical for the best surround sound.
