Things Les Paul: the Early Years of Recording H-New-Jersey All Things Les Paul: The Early Years of Recording Discussion published by Caitlin Biebrich on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Les Paul Legacy Series A Webinar with Gene Paul December 7, 2020 at 7:30pm REGISTER HERE This online talk is part of the Les Paul Legacy Series hosted by the Les Paul in Mahwah exhibit at the Mahwah Museum. Les Paul’s son, Gene Paul, will discuss the multifaceted history of Les and his many accomplishments. Gene Paul was born in 1944 and grew up listening to stories about his father’s accomplishments; Gene was especially curious about Les’ ‘sound on sound’ machine and was able to ask Les many questions about it and his other innovations. By 1959, Gene had become an accomplished drummer, travelling and performing with Les and Mary. In the late 1960’s, Les helped Gene get a job at Atlantic Records where he recorded with some of the greats of the time, including Aretha Franklin, The Modern Jazz Quartet and Gladys Knight. Gene is in a unique position to tell these stories, as he learned directly from his father. He went on to become a successful recording engineer himself. He is currently the chief mastering engineer at G&J Audio, a mixing and mastering studio for major and independent labels focused on reissues and new recordings. The program is free but donations will be gladly accepted. Registration is required. Citation: Caitlin Biebrich. All Things Les Paul: The Early Years of Recording. Amazing Grace is crafted from never before seen footage originally captured in 1972. AMAZING GRACE – THE ALBUM Atlantic Records was the pioneering home of Ray Charles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Roberta Flack, John Coltrane, and scores of other great Jazz, R&B and Pop artists. The Coasters, The Drifters, Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett head the list of African-American stars that the label marketed during the 1950s and 1960s. Aretha Franklin had originally been signed to Columbia Records by John Hammond, who also signed Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. When her Columbia career failed to ignite, Atlantic Records signed her, and under the guidance of Jerry Wexler, Franklin’s career was transformed. Starting in 1967, her string of hits – “I Never Loved A Man”, “Respect”, “Baby I Love You”, “Chain of Fools”, “Think”, “Don’t Play That Song” – kept Atlantic Records at the top of both the Pop and R&B charts. Franklin’s success disguised the fact that the label was losing touch with its R&B heritage following the death of Otis Redding and Ray Charles’ defection to a rival company.

His CD, "Someone to Light Up My Life" which features his own arrangements of the compositions of the great bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, won international raves. Brazilian critic's and listener's polls also named him the best acoustic jazz guitarist. Gene Bertoncini has just released a striking new solo CD, "Quiet Now" on the heels of his highly successful "Acoustic Romance," which reached the top ten of the jazz playlists. Jazziz magazine's March 2004 issue ranked it Number 1 in their list of the top 20 acoustic guitar CDs. His newest CD is called “Concerti” and features Gene with a string quartet and bass. A prolific and popular studio musician, Bertoncini honed his professional chops as a member of the Tonight Show band during Johnny Carson's tenure, and he has worked with composers and arrangers such as Lalo Schifrin and Michael Legrand and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
