(Oct. 15, 2010) — Some songs are hits, some we just love, and some have changed our lives. For the GRAMMY SoundTable titled “Sonic Imprints: Songs That Changed My Life,” on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2:30PM in Room 134, a select group of producer/engineers will break down the DNA of their favorite tracks and explain what moved them, what grabbed them, and why these songs left a life long impression. Moderated by Sylvia Massy, (Prince, Johnny Cash, Sublime) and featuring panelists Joe Barresi (Bad Religion, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool), Jimmy Douglass (Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, John Legend), Nathaniel Kunkel (Lyle Lovett, Everclear, James Taylor) and others, this event is sure to be lively, fun, and inspirational.. More Participant Information (other panelists TBA): Sylvia Massy broke into the big time with 1993's “Undertow” by Los Angeles rock band Tool, and went on to engineer for a diverse group of artists including Aerosmith, Babyface, Big Daddy Kane, The Black Crowes, Bobby Brown, Prince, Julio Iglesias, Seal, Skunk Anansie, and Paula Abdul, among many others. Massy also engineered and mixed projects with producer Rick Rubin, including Johnny Cash's “Unchained” album which won a GRAMMY award for Best Country Album. She continues to work with artists such as Sublime, the Cliks, and Showbread, most often at Radio Star Studios which she owns and operates in Weed, California. Joe Barresi has produced, engineered and/or mixed some of the most important hard rock, metal, and punk bands of the last 15 years including Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Bad Religion, The Melvins, Turbonegro, Wolfmother, and Clutch. Widely respected for his abilities as an engineer--and much sought after for his drum and guitar sounds, what sets Barresi apart is that he is first and foremost a musician. His discography reflects his impeccable ear for great rock music and, over the years, he’s consistently worked with quality artists and made some of their seminal records: Weezer’s "Pinkerton," the Melvins "Stoner Witch" and the Queens Of The Stone Age debut, to name a few. GRAMMY Award-winning engineer/producer Jimmy “The Senator” Douglass got his start in the music business while still in high school, working at Atlantic Records in New York City with such legends as Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, Foreigner and AC/DC. Known for bringing unconventional techniques into the studio and encouraging artists to transcend genre restrictions, his distinctive engineering and mixing style has kept him in the forefront of the industry working with platinum artists including The Neptunes, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Ginuine, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, John Legend, Rob Thomas, Duran Duran, Snoop Dogg and The Game, among many others. GRAMMY and EMMY-Award winning engineer Nathaniel Kunkel established Studio Without Walls some years ago in order to take the studio to the client—Sting's Malibu home being one notable example. Known for his work with such artists as Lyle Lovett, Everclear, and Chris Botti, he also offers production, authoring, mastering, and studio design services and is in demand with manufacturers for his innovative ideas and electrical engineering experience. A frequent contributor to numerous music publications, his recent projects include work with Nirvana, The Police, Activision, MTV, Diana Ross and the current top selling live album with James Taylor and Carol King, “Live at the Troubadour.” Producers & Engineers Wing at AES Page 2 Established in 1957, The Recording Academy is an organization of musicians, producers, engineers and recording professionals that is dedicated to improving the cultural condition and quality of life for music and its makers.
