    GEAR STORIES WITH SYLVIA MASSY The Age of the Customs A PERFECT STORM Back at the beginnings of modern civilization, soon after the invention of the wheel, the recording of music was often done through a haphazard collection of 2-track radio consoles slung together with raw wire and pow- ered by fossil fuels. Human beings spilled their souls onto long winding strips of plastic tape, rearranging iron particles and rewriting history. The invention of the wheel, in our case, was the invention of the multitrack tape recorder. What followed was the perfect storm of artistic ideas fueled by ravenous capitalism, creating the era of Custom Consoles. In 1967, a year after the groundbreaking 8-track recording of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, Ampex presented the first commercially avail- able 16-track machine, the MM-1000, and the landscape of the recording AI Z industry changed. Meanwhile, George Martin proved with The Beatles’ ON . B R multitrack masterpiece Sgt.     GEAR STORIES WITH SYLVIA MASSY Prince and the Gemini II FINDING THE RIGHT CHEAP, UNTUNED GUITAR FOR THE JOB Prince walked into Studio B, looked around at the cold, clinical ’80s Caption décor and asked, “Don’t you have a big stuffed ‘Grandma’s’ chair or something?” Knowing full well there was nothing like that in the entire facility, I said, “Why yes…of course, I’ll just…um…go next door and get it…” I then ran out of the room to the front desk. “Lemme borrow someone’s truck, QUICK!!!” I tore out of the parking lot straight down to Melrose Avenue and purchased the first upholstered chair I could find. Minutes later I calmly walked back into the session with the big chair, and set it in front of Prince. This was his first day booked into Larrabee Sound in West Hollywood and I wanted to make a good im- pression. He sat down in the chair and nodded. What was originally a four-day booking turned into a three-year odyssey with Prince. Working with Prince was extremely challenging. He was impatient, uncommunicative, intolerant, and yet extremely generous with cred- its and opportunity. And he actually wanted to know my opinion! He would have three or four rooms running at the same time, with songs in various stages of development. I usually worked in Larrabee’s Studio B on a Solid State Logic 4056 E/G console with a pair of Studer A800 analog 24-track tape recorders. To prepare for a Prince session, I would ished, tuned and beautifully tweaked rental guitars on the session, so I have the room set up for anything that might be happening that day stuck my Gemini II in the corner out of sight.

    GEAR STORIES WITH SYLVIA MASSY Johnny Cash and the Sta-Level TWO AMERICAN LEGENDS MEET Johnny Cash said to me, “I don’t sing very good, and I’m not that good at playing the guitar either.” Hard to believe these words would have come out of his mouth, but the sweet, humble man honestly thought he wasn’t much of a musician. He would come to the session every day dressed as if he were going to a funeral, and he had a sadness about him. His deep resonant voice would tell those melodic American stories with so much Caption emotion, you’d wish you could just Caption hug him and tell him everything was going to be okay. During the recording of Johnny’s Unchained, we wanted to give the disc a vintage character. While producer Rick Rubin enlisted a star-studded iconic voice.
