Media Contact: Terri Winston | Twinston@Womensaudiomission.Org | 415-425-1597 Media Contact: Terri Winston E: [email protected] P: 415-425-1597 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 25, 2016 Women’s Audio Mission Presents Two All-Star Music Production Panels at the Audio Engineering Society Convention San Francisco Nonprofit Advancing Women in the Recording Arts Leads AES Panels (San Francisco, CA – August 25, 2016) – Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women in music production and the recording arts, is presenting two all-star music production panels at the 141st Audio Engineering Society Convention in Los Angeles from September 29 – October 2nd. The panels will feature Grammy award-winning music producers and engineers who have worked with acclaimed artists ranging from Missy Elliott to Jay-Z to Carlos Santana to Taylor Swift. WAM Founder and Executive Director, Terri Winston, will moderate the “All-Star Album Production” panel on Thursday, September 29, 4:00-5:30PM featuring Grammy-winning engineers and producers Marcella Araica (Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Britney Spears, Madonna), Laura Sisk (Grammy-winner, Taylor Swift, Shakira, Pink), and Piper Payne (Coast Mastering), which will cover the latest work flow and production tips that create efficiency in the album-making process from pre-production to mastering, including traditional acoustic production and beat-making. Winston will also moderate the “Platinum Vocal Production” panel on Friday, 9/30 at 1:30PM featuring Grammy-winning panelists Jimmy Douglass (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Timbaland), Leslie Ann Jones (Dianne Reeves, B.B. King, Carlos Santana), and Neal Pogue (Outkast, Pink, Janelle Monae), that will cover the ins and outs of producing vocal tracks for platinum hits, including recording chains, compression techniques, de-essing, and vocal editing. WAM has been representing women and girls in the audio industry at the AES convention since 2003. Women are critically underrepresented in the audio industry. Less than 5% of the people who create the media and music heard on the radio, television, in film and on the internet are women. WAM trains over 1,200 women and girls a year in the recording arts in the only professional recording studio in the world built and run by women. AES donates a booth to WAM each year to increase the presence of women at the convention and in the industry. This year, the organization will be representing women and girls in the recording arts at Booth 1129. “Women’s Audio Mission is very excited to present these two spectacular and diverse panels at AES,” says WAM founder, Terri Winston. “I am excited to have such amazing engineers and producers share their exceptional wisdom and expertise at AES this year.” # # # About Women’s Audio Mission Women's Audio Mission is "changing the face of sound" by providing hands-on training, experience, career counseling and job placement to over 1,200 women/girls every year in the only professional recording studio in the world built and run by women. In a field where women are critically under-represented (less than 5%), WAM believes that women's mastery of music technology and inclusion in the production process will expand the vision and voice of media and popular culture. INTRO: what I am about to tell you BODY: TELL IT. END: summarize what I just told you. The invisible threads that form identity politics are especially messy today. Through the lens of a transnational/intersectional/feminist sensibility, my thesis paper and body of work weaves influences from both visual and music culture. Socio-political agency is explored through reconfiguration. Both thesis and artwork are informed by the organizational principles of collage logic - specifically through the contrast in texture and rhythm, and employing the notion of the monster as a harmony of incongruence. All in all, this is an account of the struggles of Diaspora Repping and artistic practice, and the dilemma of ensuing ‘rep sweats’. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express sincere thanks to my power trio thesis committee - Janet Jones, Brandon Vickerd and Suzanne Carte for their incredible insight, feedback and support. I would like to thank all my mentors and colleagues throughout my artistic and academic career. Thank you to my mom Regina, my dad Paul, my sister Polly, my brother Chris. And my fabtabulous BFFs at home and abroad. Together we make up this electric web of equal parts craziness and unconditional love, and without this I would not be able to do what I do.

  • Designing for the Ears As Well As for the Eyes
Inspicio architecture 26 Sushi & Tapas restaurant, Surfside, Florida, 2015. Photo: WSDG Designing for the Ears as Well as for the Eyes By Howard Sherman orris J. Kaplan is a very hands-on businessman. A successful real estate developer and innovative res- M taurateur/entrepreneur, his career track is marked by imaginative ventures. Last year, Kaplan and his wife Sandra began laying the groundwork for a new Miami-area restaurant. A longtime fan of master chef Fernando Chang’s culinary tal- ents, Kaplan was confident there would be a strong demand for Chef Chang’s specialty—Kosher sushi and Peruvian dishes. Kaplan invested considerable time collaborating on the bill of fare and the interior design of his new restaurant. In addition to the menu, one of his primary concerns was acoustics. An avid “foodie,” Kaplan had long avoided dining in restaurants with noise levels so high they intruded on his guests’ ability to enjoy a simple conversation along with their meal. Kaplan made a promise to himself. Diners at his new restaurant would be able to discuss their food (and other topics) without having to shout at the top of their lungs. Coincidentally, as he formulated his plans for what was to be- come “26 Sushi & Tapas” in Surfside, Florida, Kaplan was also involved in building two new Miami area synagogues. During the course of a series of visits to those construction sites, he became aware of an unusually quiet ambience. Building sites are typically noisy environments and neither of these work sites would ever be mistaken for a library, but Kaplan discovered a sound clarity that was unusual enough to spark an investiga- tion.

You'll Need A Free Acrobat PDF Viewer Plug-In For Your Browser. It has been said that "there are no rules" when it comes to mixing music in surround. Opinions still vary as to how much (if at all) the sub and center channels are utilized. There are no standards on delivery formats (audio files on hard drives, CD-Rs or DVD-Rs; Genex MO; DA-88 or 98HR tapes; or 8-track 1- or 2-inch analog) or even how the monitor speakers should be set up in the control room (ITU standard or quad equidistant). Surround signal processing and methods differ significantly from stereo with a general consensus emerging: For surround sound mixing, with higher resolution and six channels to play music over, there is less need to process individual tracks or the mix buses like stereo, so everything fits down a 2-channel pipe. As liberating as this might seem, this quantum leap in sonics and mixing options is not without caveats: Each individual track's sound quality; the cohesiveness and detail of the overall mix; reverb and delay setup and use, and the quality assurance of the final encoding process are critical for the best surround sound.

  • Considerations for COVID-19 Safe Studio Reopening
CONSIDERATIONS FOR RECORDING STUDIOS AS THEY REOPEN Dear Friends and Colleagues, As businesses around the country consider how to proceed with plans for partial and staggered reopenings, we understand that they are feeling a deep sense of responsibility and trepidation. Directives for opening are, of course, on a state-by-state and city-by-city basis. In the meantime, we have spoken with numerous recording studio owners, engineers and others around the country. Based on their suggested protocols, we’ve compiled a list of potential safety measures. The Producers & Engineers Wing®, like its membership, is resilient. The Wing has been a resource for the recording community for nearly 20 years, and will continue its work with you long after this crisis has passed. We hope this information is helpful, and wish you and your loved ones good health and safety as we navigate this crisis. Knowledge about the COVID-19 pandemic is constantly evolving, and, as always, we are open to, and grateful for, comments and suggestions from others in our recording community, so please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. In addition to the guidelines below, we suggest you regularly consult national, state and local government agency guidance, including from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC’s guidance for businesses and employers is available at: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/ community/organizations/businesses-employers.html. As this situation evolves we welcome your feedback so please stay in touch. Be well, Maureen Droney Sr. Managing Director, Producers & Engineers Wing – Recording Technology www.grammy.com/studioreopening As a disclaimer, the considerations listed here are not intended to be, and shall not be construed to be, legal or medical advice or an offer to provide legal services.
