Geneva Medical College*
GENEVA MEDICAL COLLEGE* Geneva Medical College was chartered in 1834 and gave its first course of instruction in 1835. Its first faculty were Edward Cutbush, Willard Parker, Thomas Spencer, John George Morgan, Charles B. Coventry and Anson Colman. Its faculty at a later period, including several years, were James Hadley, John Delamater, Thomas Spencer, James Webster, Charles B. Cov entry, Frank H. Hamilton and Charles A. Lee. After the Buffalo Medical School was opened the Geneva faculty was re-organized, consisting at dif ferent times of the following members: John Towler, A. P. Bowen, Fred er.ick Hyde, William Sweetzer, Joel Hardy, Caleb Green, George Burr, James H. Jerome, Alfred Butler, Nelson Nivison, Hiram N. Eastman, Ezra T. Allen and Charles E. Ryder, some of whom continued in their places, laboring in the school until it closed in 1872. When the Geneva Medical School was merged into the Medical Department of Syracuse University, the following members of its faculty, Towler, Hyde, Nivison, Eastman and Ryder, accepted professorships in the latter new institution.-Medica/ Register of. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I88I, p. 205. (Seep. 77·) Geneva Medical College as such had an existence of thirty-seven years, from 1835 to 1872. The period of its greatest prosperity being from 1840 to 1850. The largest class being that of 1844, with 196 matriculating stud ents and 47 graduates. The smallest graduating class being four, in 1856. During these thirty-seven years the degree of M. D. was conferred on 701 students.-Dr. Alfred Jl.fercer. (Seep. 77). Performance Evaluation of the 19th Century Clipper Ship Cutty Sark: A Comparative Study C. Tonry1, M. Patel1, C. Bailey1, W. Davies2, J. Harrap2, E. Kentley2, P. Mason2 1University of Greenwich, London, UK 2 Abstract The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Dumbarton, is the last intact composite tea clipper ship [1]. One of the last tea clippers built she took part in the tea races back from China. These races caught the public imagination of the day and were widely reported in newspapers [2]. They developed from a desire for 'fresh' tea and the first ship to return with the new season's tea could charge a higher price for the cargo. Clipper ships were built for speed rather than carrying capacity. The hull efficiency of the Cutty Sark and her contemporaries is currently unknown. However, with modern CFD techniques, virtual experiments can be performed to model the fluid flow past the hull and so based on the shear stress and the pressure over the surface of the hull to calculate the resistance. In order to compare the hull against other ships three other ships were selected. The Farquharson, an East Indiaman built in 1820 [3]; the Thermopylae, another composite clipper built in 1868 which famously raced the Cutty Sark in 1872 [1]; and finally the Erasmo a later Italian all-steel construction 4-masted barque built in 1903[4]. Fig. 1 shows images of these ships. As only one of these ships exists today, and she no longer sails, 3D geometries were constructed fromlines plans of the ships hulls. -
Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

Biographical & Historical Information: The son and grandson of shipyard workers, Charles Patrick Labadie was reared in Detroit and attended the University of Detroit. He began his career with the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, became director of the Saugatuck Marine Museum, then earned a master’s license for tugs and worked for Gaelic Tugboat Company in Detroit. He directed Duluth’s Canal Park Museum (now Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center) from its founding in 1973 until 2001. In 2003, he was appointed historian for the NOAA’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, Michigan. Scope & Content: This is an extensive 19th Century Great Lakes maritime history collection. The vessel database is accessible through library’s website. See the library’s card catalog to search the book collection. The major components of the collection are: vessels, cargo, biographical, canals, owners, ports, technology / shipbuilding = broken down by vessels types (i.e. sail, tugs, propellers), and machinery. * omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Technology and Empire: Comparing the Dutch and British Maritime Technologies during the Napoleonic Era (1792–1815) By Ivor Mollema December, 2015 Director of Thesis: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: History The two ships, Bato (1806) and Brunswick (1805) wrecked in Simons Bay, South Africa, provide an opportunity to compare British and Dutch maritime technologies during the Napoleonic Era (1792–1815). The former was a Dutch 74-gun ship of the line and the latter a British East Indiaman. Their remains reveal pertinent information about the maritime technologies available to each European power. Industrial capacity and advanced metal working played a significant role in ship construction initiatives of that period, while the dwindling timber supplies forced invention of new technologies. Imperial efforts during the Napoleonic Era relied on naval power. Maritime technologies dictated imperial strategy as ships were deployed to expand or maintain colonial empires. Naval theorists place the strategy into a wider spectrum and the analysis of the material culture complements further understanding of sea power. The study also recommends management options to preserve the archaeological sites for future study and to showcase for heritage tourism. Moloney 2015 Abstract Investigation into underwater archaeology began, inevitably, with the investigation of shipwrecks. For decades whole divisions of our discipline have focused on studying the intricate characteristics and mechanisms involved in the propulsion, construction, and manipulation of ships themselves (e.g. nautical archaeology). However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? In this study I examine the spatial organization of ships in an effort to reconstruct the social dynamics of shipboard society. -

No part of this article may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the author, Doug Massey. 1 Two Fires “I am going to set this house on fire”, the tall man said as the firewood he was carrying crashed down on the floorboards.1 “Boys, you have just fifteen minutes to plunder my premises; after that I give them to the flames”.2 What sounds like one instance of arson, is, in fact, two very separate occurrences: The first happened in the Minisink area of Orange County New York, and the second in Upper Canada, hundreds of kilometres away and some thirty-six years later. It gets stranger. Both arsonists were destroying their own property. And both were members of the Westbrook family. Father and son! On April 20, 1779, Anthony Westbrook set fire to the fortified house of Major Johannes Decker Jr., which housed his confiscated property. Branded a “traitor to his country” by both neighbours and kin in the area, Anthony now returned for revenge with the much- feared Joseph Brant. If Anthony Westbrook could not enjoy his furniture, then the hated rebels would certainly not either. On January 31/Feb. 1, 1814, son Andrew, equally a traitor in British eyes because he had taken up the American cause in the War of 1812, razed his own house, mill, barns and storage buildings in Delaware Township, Middlesex County. -
