When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History does not just convey the content that visitors to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale will encounter, but also a vision. Disquiet serves as a driving force behind research, which requires dialogue to verify its theories and needs history to absorb knowledge. This is what La Biennale does and will continue to do as it seeks to reinforce a methodology that creates even stronger bonds between its own disciplines. There are six Muses at the Biennale: Art, Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, given a voice through the great events that fill Venice and the world every year. There are the places that serve as venues for all of La Biennale’s activities: the Giardini, the Arsenale, the Palazzo del Cinema and other cinemas on the Lido, the theatres, the city of Venice itself. -

Continues on next page. The Return of the Spirit in Painting 5 February – 23 August 2020 Gallery 4 This exhibition focuses on the Royal Academy of Arts’ seminal A New Spirit in Painting (1981) and its connection with important solo shows that took place at the Whitechapel Gallery during the 1980’s. A New Spirit in Painting, co-curated by Christos M. Joachimides, independent curator, Normal Rosenthal, Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy and Nicolas Serota, then director of the Whitechapel Gallery, bought painting to the forefront of contemporary art discourse. Including works by three generations of Western European and American artists, it featured mostly figurative painting after a decade of conceptual art. The exhibition’s curators were criticised at the time, both for showing artwork perceived as commercial, and for the unconventional nature of the paintings on display. Continues on next page. The Return of the Spirit in Painting brings together five of the 38 artists from the influential exhibition. During his tenure at Whitechapel Gallery, between 1976 and 1988, Serota invited 14 artists including Georg Baselitz, Philip Guston, Anselm Kiefer, Malcolm Morley, Julian Schnabel and Cy Twombly to have their first major solo shows in the UK. -

NICOLA DE MARIA I Fogli Che Il Vento Mi Sparge Sono Disegni Di Vento E Di Animali
NICOLA DE MARIA I fogli che il vento mi sparge sono disegni di vento e di animali GAM – Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Exhibition Area – Via Magenta 31 – Turin From 6 June to 29 September 2013 From 6 June, GAM – Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea , Turin, presents a grand exhibition of works on paper by Nicola De Maria , in the Exhibition Area on the first floor. This sweeping anthology includes about 300 works on paper from the 1970s to the present day. Nicola De Maria will be creating a number of site-specific works for this event at GAM: a massive mural (9 x 4 metres) and two large works on paper (5 x 2 metres), which show how works on paper created for a particular setting constitute a fundamental part of De Maria's art, together with some wall paintings. The exhibition will examine the relationship between drawing and painted space, the fragility of paper and the monumentality of the wall, in a constant interaction of dimensions in which the song of drawing blends into the musicality of the wall. Drawing is more than just the origin of all Nicola De Maria's art, for it almost acquires a life of its own, brimming with a spirituality that wells up directly from the colour. In an essay for the catalogue of the 1990 exhibition at the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken, Germany, he writes: "My drawings are banners of joy and strength. The bells toll, unhappiness flees the world. My drawings are magical flowers, enchanted nightingales..." De Maria made his first mural painting in Milan in 1977, and that year he made a second one for the Paris Biennale using the fresco technique of the Old Masters. -
