Environmental-Mafia. the Role of Literature in Education in Environmental Education Projects
The Online Journal of Science and Technology - January 2018 Volume 8, Issue 1 ENVIRONMENTAL-MAFIA. THE ROLE OF LITERATURE IN EDUCATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROJECTS Alessandro PERISSINOTTO University of Turin, Department of Philosophy and Educational Sciences, Turin- Italy [email protected] Abstract: The judicial systems of many countries contemplate the notion of "environmental crime". A crime always involves suffering; then, through the notion of environmental crime, the law recognizes the existence of a pain inflicted to the entire Earth. A narrative focused on "Environmental Crimes" allows readers to experience (virtually) this "pain of the planet." The purpose of this intervention is to illustrate how the thriller, thanks to the identification mechanisms, may contribute to the formation of an "environmental consciousness" able to feel empathically the planet's pain and prevent it. In other words, it is assumed that fiction can play an important role in environmental education projects. Keywords: environmental education, fiction, . Introduction My aim is to analyze the role of literary fiction in the definition of massive environmental sensitivity. To explain the problem I’ll start from a text by one of the most famous contemporary Italian writers: Roberto Saviano. In his non- fiction novel, Gomorrah, Saviano illustrated the tremendous power of the economic empire of the Neapolitan Mafia, the Camorra, and for this reason he was sentenced to death by the mafia itself. In the last chapter of the book, he speaks of the "Land of Fires", of the territory where, through criminal organizations, thousands of tonnes of toxic or polluting waste are illegally disposed of. The following passage clarifies many aspects of this business, but also tells us something about social attitudes that make it possible: The image of a landfill, pit, or quarry is increasingly a concrete and visible synonym for deadly danger for nearby residents. -

GRANDI & ASSOCIATI TRANSLATION RIGHTS 2017 Frankfurter Buchmesse Hall 6.3 Table 2M FICTION Edoardo Albinati, UN ADULTERIO Rizzoli, June 2017, pp 126 Three editions in one week Erri and Clementina flee their humdrum lives to spend a weekend together on an island after falling for each other virtually at first sight. They lie about it to their respective spouses, and perhaps even to themselves. The risk they are running is huge but they’re driven by an uncontrollable passion. It’s a hurdle they need to overcome. However, Albinati does not tell the whole story of the novel’s two main characters, as they yearn to escape yet are imprisoned on the island. Only a few episodes of their adventure are revealed to the reader. Both stirring and sensuous, the book is also straightforward and brutally honest, yet the story is built on lies. There’s something for everyone in these compelling pages, whether you’ve had an affair, or you’d never dream of having one, or, deep down, you would just love to have one. Edoardo Albinati (Rome, 1956) has taught the inmates of Rome’s Rebibbia penitentiary for over twenty years, an experience he describes in his memoir Maggio selvaggio. He has written film scripts for Italian directors Matteo Garrone and Marco Bellocchio. He wrote Vita e morte di un ingegnere. In 2016 he wrote La Scuola Cattolica and won the Strega Book Prize (English translation of Chapter 1 is available). Rights sold to Atlas Contact (Holland), Lumen (Spain), Berlin Verlag (Germany), Farrar Straus & Giroux (USA), Picador (UK). -

The Fiction of the Artist Under Contract in Novels of Organized Crime from Italy and Mexico
Writing under the Influence: The Fiction of the Artist under Contract in Novels of Organized Crime from Italy and Mexico Antoine Ducoux (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3) [Accepted for publication: 04/04/2020] Abstract iction writers have sought to provide original descriptions of the mafia’s F obscure and changing worlds and reflect on their own representational strategies by using metaliterary devices. In Yuri Herrera’s Trabajos del reino (2004), Walter Siti’s Resistere non serve a niente (2012) and Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda’s Contrabando (2008), the representation of the artist under contract with organized crime provides a narrative content and a metaliterary figure which can help us make sense of the complex relationship between literary fiction and organized crime. The artist under contract is shown to put their own credibility at risk and reflect from a position of fragility and depen- dence. From the intra-diegetic representation of an author under contract with organized crime—a key aspect of Herrera’s Trabajos del reino—, to the blurring of the autobiographical pact with the reader in Resistere non serve a niente and Contrabando, this article asks how authors creatively question the credibility and the authority of their own literary discourse on organized crime. Through the study of the contractual aspects of the literary text (as an intra-diegetic component and a constitutive element of the autofiction genre), the article discusses the hermeneutic value of fiction: is there a pro- ductive use of ambiguity that can facilitate the interpretation of the secretive and ambiguous worlds of organized crime? And understanding meant being part of it somehow. -
A Socio-Economic Study of the Camorra Through Journalism
A SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE CAMORRA THROUGH JOURNALISM, RELIGION AND FILM by ROBERT SHELTON BELLEW (under the direction of Thomas E. Peterson) ABSTRACT This dissertation is a socio-economic study of the Camorra as portrayed through Roberto Saviano‘s book Gomorra: Viaggio nell'impero economico e nel sogno di dominio della Camorra and Matteo Garrone‘s film, Gomorra. It is difficult to classify Saviano‘s book. Some scholars have labeled Gomorra a ―docufiction‖, suggesting that Saviano took poetic freedoms with his first-person triune accounts. He employs a prose and news reporting style to narrate the story of the Camorra exposing its territory and business connections. The crime organization is studied through Italian journalism, globalized economics, eschatology and neorealistic film. In addition to igniting a cultural debate, Saviano‘s book has fomented a scholarly consideration on the innovativeness of his narrative style. Wu Ming 1 and Alessandro Dal Lago epitomize the two opposing literary camps. Saviano was not yet a licensed reporter when he wrote the book. Unlike the tradition of news reporting in the United States, Italy does not have an established school for professional journalism instruction. In fact, the majority of Italy‘s leading journalists are writers or politicians by trade who have gravitated into the realm of news reporting. There is a heavy literary influence in Italian journalism that would be viewed as too biased for Anglo- American journalists. Yet, this style of writing has produced excellent material for a rich literary production that can be called engagé or political literature. A study of Gomorra will provide information about the impact of the book on current Italian journalism.
