Discours De Philippe Levillain Membre De L'institut Aux Obsèques Discours de Philippe Levillain Membre de l’Institut aux Obsèques du Cardinal Roger Etchegaray Lundi 9 septembre 2019 Éminence, Messeigneurs, Monsieur le Ministre, Monsieur le Préfet, Monsieur le Maire de Bayonne, Il n’est pas usuel que les obsèques, d’un cardinal de la sainte Église romaine, aient lieu dans la cathédrale de son pays natal. Le cardinal Etchegaray, que j’ai connu de longue date, quand il fut expert au Concile, et moi jeune attaché de presse, n’aimait pas les honneurs. Il les prenait, parce qu’on les lui proposait. Il les prenait aussi parce qu’il estimait qu’il était de la dignité de sa fonction d’assumer le rang qui lui a été proposé par l’Église catholique romaine au Vatican. Il y vécut trente ans, sans être véritablement Romain, attaché à Rome pour sa beauté et surtout pour le tombeau de Pierre et le Souverain pontife. Il fut le compagnon de route permanent de Jean-Paul II, qui le créa cardinal le 30 juin 1979. Et il appréciait souverainement cette encyclique du Saint-Père Redemptor hominis, publié en mars 1979, peu de temps avant son élévation au cardinalat. Il en aimait le thème, la rédemption, puisque l’incarnation est une recréation, dont il faut que chacun soit conscient au fil de sa vie et en fasse témoignage et action permanente. Il ne sollicita pas l’entrée à l’Académie des Sciences morales et politiques. On lui demanda d’être candidat. C’était en 1994, et le grand-rabbin Kaplan venait de mourir. Disons que l’Académie des Sciences morales et politiques manquait d’énergie spirituelle. Elle demanda au cardinal Etchegaray de la lui donner. Il accepta d’autant plus qu’il s’agissait de succéder à l’ambassadeur René Brouillet, Ambassadeur de France de 1963 à 1974, grand ambassadeur gaulliste, l’ambassadeur de Paul VI, celui qui vécut le Concile, et qui, après le Concile, observa les après-Concile à Rome. Une grande connivence unissait les deux hommes, une même spiritualité. L’un était, je dirais, gallican à Rome, ultramontain à Paris. Le cardinal était tout simplement le cardinal de la sainte Église romaine. Appelé à l’Académie des Sciences morales et politiques en 1994, il le fut en même temps que Michel Albert, grand économiste, et ces deux faces de l’Académie coïncidèrent dans cette élection, et qu’il porta chez nous jusqu’à récemment, quand il dut se dédire. Quand il obtint, en janvier 2017, son exeat de la part du pape François, souvent, j’avais parlé, ou plutôt quelquefois – ne soyons pas présomptueux – avec le cardinal Etchegaray d’un tableau fameux du Greco, L’Enterrement du comte d’Orgaz, qui se trouve à Tolède. Le cardinal observait surtout dans ce diptyque en hauteur le faste de l’enterrement en-deçà et, en-haut, le pénitent devant la Vierge et l’Enfant, le petit papillon comme un ange, qui représentait l’âme frémissante. Le cardinal n’était pas une âme frémissante. Il avait des certitudes très raides. Je veux dire par là, très fortes. Mais il aimait les conversations au sein de notre Compagnie, l’Académie des Sciences morales et politiques. Il aimait l’histoire, la philosophie. Il incarnait ce mouvement perpétuel de joie, qui est la joie de la vie, vis-à-vis de l’Académie où beaucoup de savants discutent, et surtout essayent de proposer une image de la France qui est celle de son rayonnement culturel et intellectuel. Le cardinal apportait le rayonnement spirituel. Il le faisait avec gentillesse, joie, je dirais un certain humour permanent, qui faisait qu’il ne prenait personne au sérieux, et que tout le monde le prenait au sérieux, car le cardinal irradiait. Sa présence, d’ailleurs, était assez étonnante, quand il pouvait venir – car il ne pouvait pas toujours – parce qu’il apportait quelque chose d’autre, quelque chose de nouveau. Sa grande parole était celle que la foi libère, parce qu’elle est la vérité. C’était toujours Redemptor hominis qu’il portait aux nues, comme encyclique princeps de Jean- Paul II. Je voudrais terminer ces quelques rares propos en mentionnant la visite que lui fit juste avant sa mort le grand-rabbin Haïm Korsia, et qui lui récita la fin du psaume 91 : « Je le rassasierai de longs jours et je lui ferai voir mon salut » ; et ajouter, d’autre part, que, chère Éminence, si le souffle de la parole traverse le mystère de la mort, peut-être puis-je vous dire, au nom de tous, de notre Compagnie, de tous vos amis, que non seulement vous nous manquez, mais que vous portez avec vous les espoirs de votre forte âme qui, elle aussi, nous a élevés pendant tout ce séjour parmi nous. The role played by some sectors of the Roman Catholic Church in the mediation efforts leading to this positive outcome has long been underestimated, as has the internal pluralism of the Church in this regard. This article specifically examines the transnational dimension of this mediation, including its symbolic aspect. Georges-Henri Soutou, Président de l’Académie, en mémoire de son confrère le cardinal Roger Etchegaray (séance du lundi 16 septembre 2019) Mes chers confrères, « Je suis né à Jérusalem, pas simplement à Espelette. J’ai donc deux patries qui doivent se rejoindre et constituer l’unité de ma propre vie »1. Ainsi s’exprimait le cardinal Etchegaray dans un entretien télévisé en 2008, peu après une chute au cours de laquelle il s’était fracturé une vertèbre. Il en est dorénavant ainsi, puisque notre confrère s’est éteint, le 4 septembre dernier, dans sa retraite de Cambo-les- Bains au Pays Basque et a franchi les portes de la Jérusalem céleste. Cette nouvelle nous a bien entendu attristés car elle retranche de nos vies une personnalité d’une exceptionnelle envergure et d’une singulière bonté. Mais, attendant ce moment, notre confrère disait dans le même entretien : « La vérité, c’est que ma joie pleine ce sera quand même, après avoir traversé ces continents et les peuples de ce petit univers où nous vivons, de pouvoir vivre, non pas seulement passer, dans la Maison du Seigneur, de mon Dieu ». C’est fort de cette espérance, de la promesse du baptême rappelée lors de l’absoute et muni des derniers sacrements que le cardinal nous a quittés. De sa naissance à Espelette en 1922 à son enterrement en cette même ville 97 ans plus tard, Roger Etchegaray aura donc cheminé sur les routes du monde. Cette métaphore de la marche et du chemin est omniprésente dans ses déclarations et ses écrits.

We are faced before a fabric of complex social, political and religious situation by which we have not yet finished identifying all the elements. We are reckoning on a comeback of Eugene’s portrait to bring out the exchanges between the uncle and the father of the future saint.
