COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Brixworth and District Newsletter Learn, laugh, live Registered Charity No 1178196 Issue 76 August 2021 THE BIG DEBATE – WHO IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST With so many talented and accomplished musicians using the guitar as their instrument of choice, from the early bluesmen to modern-day shredders and rockers, it is inevitable that no two-people will choose the same guitarist as their “greatest guitarist of all time”. It would be very easy for me to say that, in my opinion, my vote would go to …………. However, that is not my intention. Instead, this month’s musical journey may, hopefully, shine some light on a few players with whom you might not be too familiar, and who you might like to give a further look and listen to after this. Although a guitar is just a guitar, the sounds that they make in the hands of the ‘top players’ can be very different, as I will endeavour to demonstrate in this month’s randomly ordered selection. We start off with a player who is technically perfect, and whom we saw playing the piano in an earlier musical edition of the newsletter. That is ERIC JOHNSON, who is way above the technical skills of the more well-known Eric Clapton. The track I have selected really does demonstrate his virtuosity on the 6-string Fender Stratocaster, the tonal quality and changes are superb and a delight on the ears - Eric Johnson - Trail of Tears ‘Live 1988’ - YouTube Jazzing it up a bit, we have Swedish showman YNGWIE (Ing-Vay) MALMSTEEN, whose concert and album playlists includes classical pieces from Paganini, Vivaldi, Bach, etc.

It was even a slightly ill-fitting encore during his brief spell fronting Black Sabbath in the early 80s. He recalls the plight of Luciano Pavarotti, with whom he sang a couple of times, and who one day expressed his jealousy of Gillan getting to sing Smoke on the Water. We have to mimic our original interpretation. Which is unfortunate, because almost everyone who knows his work would describe Gillan as a hard-rock singer. Not least because he continues to front Deep Purple, who have just released Whoosh! A few years here, then on to something else. But we do pass messages, and the atmosphere is quite good. I was swatting at the air to wave away the smoke. It was pure Spinal Tap, a moment of panic. Then there was the Stonehenge stage set itself. Either the specifications had been in metres when they should have been in feet, or it was built at actual size. Either way, it was too big for many of the venues Sabbath were meant to play. The crowd reaction at that opening show was not the awe Sabbath had been hoping for. It was unbelievable. His autobiography suggests he spent a great deal of time either drinking or in search of drink, but he was a social drinker who drank to get drunk, rather than someone who needed a bottle next to him at all times, he says.

Die ersten drei Alben –Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970) und Santana III (1971) sowie Welcome (1972), Caravanserei (1973), Borboletta (1974) und das aus dem Jahre 2016 stammende Santana IV in nahezu Urbesetzung sind für mich unverändert aktuelle Musik, die regelmäßig auf dem Plattenteller dreht. Und die meisten der zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen auch, hinzukommen die frühen Journey, Abraxas Pool, einige Neil Schon Soloprojekte (herausragend: Beyond the Thunder), sie alle bilden meinen Santana-Kosmos ab. Das sich der Über-Gitarrist zeitweilig auf die Mainstream-/ Popseite geschlagen und erfolgreich radiotaugliche Schlagermusik abgeliefert hat, kann unter Betrachtung des bisherigen Gesamtkatalogs hingenommen werden. Um so erfreulicher, das Vorgestern veröffentlichte neue Album Africa Speaks, das -was für ein Klischee- überzeugend zu den Santana-Wurzeln zurückführt. Ehe ich jetzt in den Falle „falle“, wie es fast alle professionellen oder auch die unberufenenen Kritiker soeben tun, irgendein back-to-the-roots Geschwurbel ( … er kann es noch, klingt wie früher, zurückgekehrt in die musikalische Heimat etc.) und vertrackste Analysen über den Ursprung der 11 Titel anstelle, nur soviel: Africa Speaks ist ein tolles, mitreißendes Santana Album in der ursprünglichen Santana Sprache und die Fortsetzung von Santana 1 bis 4, so – als hätte es nichts dazwischen gegeben. Der Titel des Albums gibt genau das musikalische Thema wieder. Erstmals hat mit der 47 jährigen spanischen Concha Buika eine Sängerin das Sagen auf einem Santana Album und das wiederum schafft doch noch ein neues Feeling. Einfach klasse Musik. Damit ist alles gesagt. Das muß reichen. Hört Ihr`s, dann hört Ihr`s.
